Throughout the region, most RV parks remain open from early spring through late fall, with limited year-round options. Access to I-95 makes navigation straightforward for larger motorhomes, though some campgrounds have narrow entrance roads requiring careful maneuvering. Several parks charge additional fees for amenities like WiFi, with one visitor noting that "Internet is an extra fee! ($6/day)." Propane service is limited at most locations, requiring advance planning. Southington Rest Area provides a free RV dump station available from April 30 through November 1. Pet policies vary by location, with most parks allowing pets but enforcing leash requirements and designating specific dog-friendly areas. Big rig owners should call ahead to confirm turning radius clearance, as older campgrounds weren't designed for modern motorhome dimensions.

    Mystic KOA

Great campground for coastal CT & RI

We stayed at Mystic KOA in North Stonington, Connecticut, to be tourists in Mystic. Spoiler alert… we had a great stay!

This campground is just 15-minutes from Mystic and about an hour’s drive to Newport, Rhode Island. It’s just a few minutes from I-95 and so close to Mystic Aquarium, downtown Mystic, Mystic Seaport, and all the local spots.

It’s a well-maintained campground with 2 pools(though the larger one was closed for maintenance during our stay), lots of play areas and daily activities for little ones, and a cool“pub truck” for adult drinks. Our site(#408) was about 85’ long with plenty of room for our 45’ motorhome and toad(and then some!). It was level and gravel with a nice fire ring and picnic table. The hookups worked fine with 50-amp electric and decent water pressure. Cable TV had nearly 50-channels, but the wi-fi didn’t quite reach our part of the park.

Due to a family issue, we needed to leave about a day-and-a-half early. We called the office as a courtesy to let them know as we were pulling out and received a partial credit for a night’s stay on our credit card. Didn’t even ask, they just did it. Thanks Mystic KOA!

We’ll definitely be back. This is a great place to stay when visiting the coastal Connecticut/Rhode Island area.

    Yogi Bear’s Jellystone Park in Sturbridge - [CLOSED}

    Pine lake , Sturbridge Ma.

I’m told that this used to be Jellystone.

It’s now called Pine Lake Rv and cottages.

Not knowing what the previous campground was like I can’t compare. But the new owners surely did a total revamp. There is approximately 30 cottages and many pull through and back in sites for any size RV.

The bathroom/showers were all new and very nice and clean. It seems to be very family friendly. There’s an 8 acre lake with kayaks and fishing, a basketball court,   a game pavilion and a well stocked store. The RV sites are   spacious and pretty close to near perfect level.

The problems I came across was there were very few places to dispose of camp trash, I had to actually walk around looking for one. The camp store doesn’t open until 9:00AM and closes at 4:00PM

If you can, try and NOT stay on the back upper level ( the 700 ) spots. It’s around 100 feet from a very busy road and loud !

    Black Rock State Park Campground

    A nice family friendly campground

This is a nice family friendly campground that makes for easy trips. There are a variety of sites available, from open field sites to more wooded and private areas. The campground also has a lake for swimming, trails for hiking, and some nice quiet areas for fishing. Well maintained bathrooms, with available showers, are also spread throughout the grounds. Not pet friendly unfortunately.

    Wolf's Den Family Campground

    Perfect location central in Connecticut

This place is off Route 9 in Connecticut on the east side of the Connecticut River (major RT 9 highway is on west side). You need to cross the river via bridge to Goodspeed Opera house and past to get to the RV campground. Nearby attractions are Gillette Castle and Goodspeed Opera. The campground itself is realy nice. Cable TV at most sites. Only electric 30 or 50A, and water; but there are a few dumpstations around in the camp. Very peaceful. There are activities on Friday and Saturday (like Bingo). Great store with extended hours. The camp staff will help you with anything. Really long or tall RV will need to stay close to the front of the campground, as typical older campground is not designed for 40 foot long or 10 foot high campers.

    Aces High RV Park

    Peaceful

Well organized campground with both water front back in sites as well as large pull throughs. Pull through sites also have lots of space between them so you don't feel like you are on top of the neighbors. Sites and roads are a pea gravel material and each site has large grassy areas around it. It was a quiet area with ponds and creeks and a generally relaxing setting. It has a clean playground and well maintained pool as well as some walking paths, large grassy areas, pavilion and volleyball court. All sites but one (#67) are full hook up. Some seasonal sites but all were tasteful and not trashy looking. We enjoyed the shade trees on our site (#3) and noticed many sites had similar trees, but the owner keeps them trimmed to not interfere when parking on your site. There is also a creek area for dog swimming. Our two labs loved it! Local kayaking areas and about 30 min to Foxwoods Casino, even closer to Mohegan Sun. Mystic Seaport and Mystic Aquarium are also not too far. Nearby (5min drive) is also a fun looking place for mini golf. Will definitely be back!

    Wells State Park Campground

    Rustic but not for RVs

Chose this spot to give us a rest on a trip to Canada (and again to go back to Maine to complete the vacation after we had truck trouble). Chose a pull-through to save time and effort. The first time we chose site 1 (pull through). This past weekend we chose site 38 (pull through).

A few weeks ago when we visited, site 1 was close to the entry gate, but was very confusing as a pull through. I just backed the trailer in. The next morning we saw that the "pull through" had not been maintained in several seasons. Tree limbs and brush intruded on the driveway. There was no way to get a truck and trailer through that without damage.

Yesterday we tried site 38. We had to take the camp road around the entire park, then enter the "loop" section. Even the "main" roads required my wife to watch as I cleared tree trunks; it was difficult to snake our little trailer around the bends. The driveway to site 38 was a mess. Tree limbs and brush invaded the drive, and there was nowhere level on the whole site. I used a record 9 blocks to get 4 levels high on the downhill wheel. When leaving we had to go out through the adjoining site, because there was no way we'd be able to make the turn out of the site onto the 10' wide tote road because of the trees.

A surcharge which makes it $50/night for non-MA residents, plus, no dump station on site and $7 for four pieces of firewood (go to the Walmart 2 miles away instead) will have us skip this place in the future, even if it's in a convenient place.

For those looking to vacation here. There was minimal cell phone coverage with Verizon. I could check messages but wouldn't try to stream. The highway is very loud (I-90 is across the lake). There are a lot of boggy areas and swamps which, although pretty, grew a lot of mosquitoes that kept my wife indoors. A lot of sites were fairly large and private. The beach area is close to the lower sites. Bathrooms and showers were tight and needed updating, but cleaned.

Guide to Rocky Hill

Central Connecticut offers RV sites ranging from 30 to 257 sites across several established campgrounds within an hour's drive of Rocky Hill. The region sits at the intersection of the Connecticut River Valley and the Central Connecticut Lowlands, with elevations rarely exceeding 1,000 feet. Most campgrounds operate seasonally from May through October, coinciding with the area's average 200 frost-free days.

What to do

Fishing opportunities: Prospect Mountain Campground in nearby Granville offers a pond for fishing. "Kids had a blast fishing and riding their bikes around," reports Megin F., who traveled from Louisiana to camp there.

Amusement park access: Families can camp near Lake Compounce amusement park at Lake Compounce Campground in Bristol. The campground "is attached to an amusement park but far enough away not to be a bother," according to Diane R.

Historic site visits: Campsites provide convenient access to Mystic Seaport from various locations. "Seaport RV is a great, spacious campground with many amenities and a location close to Mystic. My husband and I were able to ride our bikes into town," notes Laura L. in her review.

What campers like

Level concrete pads: Sun Outdoors Mystic receives praise for its site quality. "Clean, well-maintained, and level site with concrete pad and patio (I love a clean, level concrete pad!). Utility hookups were in great condition and everything worked as it should," writes Matt S.

Pet-friendly areas: Many campsites welcome pets with designated areas. "There is also a creek area for dog swimming. Our two labs loved it!" shares April L. about Aces High RV Park in East Lyme.

Recreational facilities: Swimming pools and playgrounds rank high among camper preferences. According to Lisa S., Rudd Pond Area at Taconic State Park offers "New bath house with multiple shower rooms. Wonderful hiking trails. Pond for fishing & swimming. Kiddie pond, children's playground."

What you should know

Seasonal operations: Most RV parks in the region operate from May through mid-October. Countryside RV Park in Griswold runs "May 1 to Oct 15," providing water, electric, and sewer hookups during this period.

Site privacy considerations: Site spacing varies significantly between campgrounds. At Lake Compounce, "Sites were large enough for RV. NO privacy, but very clean." Others note similar concerns: "Unless you're lucky enough to get an end spot, those are pull-thru."

Cellular reception variability: Some campgrounds have limited cell service. A camper at Sturbridge RV Resort reported, "Cell reception is not great. Camp link Wifi for a fee is workable unless you need to do zoom calls."

Tips for camping with families

Check playground proximity: When booking sites with children, request locations near playgrounds. "They have a nice playground, great pool. The sites on the water looked nice- hoping to try for that next time!" notes Stephanie about Prospect Mountain Campground.

Consider weekend activity schedules: "Prospects mountain is a great campground for families with younger kids. They have activities every weekend such as dances, bingo, hayrides," reports Sandra S., highlighting weekend programming options.

Look for educational opportunities: Many campgrounds provide access to museums and historic sites. "One day we launched our kayaks north of the drawbridge in town at the public launch and paddled down to Mystic Seaport which was fun to see the historic boats from the water," shares a visitor.

Tips from RVers

Verify pull-through availability: Totoket Valley RV Park offers "Small campground with good electrical, clean water, sewer and a friendly owner. Each site has grass and a picnic table," according to Tara N., making it "perfect for a stop over."

Bring leveling equipment: Not all sites provide level pads. "Our site was a nice long, level pull-thru. Hook-ups were placed in ideal locations for the pad which was gravel," reports one camper about their experience at an RV resort near Mystic.

Research campground layouts: At some RV sites near Rocky Hill, Connecticut, setup configurations can challenge privacy. "What could easily be a very nice and spacious pull-thru spot are 2 back to back back-ins," notes one reviewer about site arrangements.
