    Mystic KOA

Great campground for coastal CT & RI

We stayed at Mystic KOA in North Stonington, Connecticut, to be tourists in Mystic. Spoiler alert… we had a great stay!

This campground is just 15-minutes from Mystic and about an hour’s drive to Newport, Rhode Island. It’s just a few minutes from I-95 and so close to Mystic Aquarium, downtown Mystic, Mystic Seaport, and all the local spots.

It’s a well-maintained campground with 2 pools(though the larger one was closed for maintenance during our stay), lots of play areas and daily activities for little ones, and a cool“pub truck” for adult drinks. Our site(#408) was about 85’ long with plenty of room for our 45’ motorhome and toad(and then some!). It was level and gravel with a nice fire ring and picnic table. The hookups worked fine with 50-amp electric and decent water pressure. Cable TV had nearly 50-channels, but the wi-fi didn’t quite reach our part of the park.

Due to a family issue, we needed to leave about a day-and-a-half early. We called the office as a courtesy to let them know as we were pulling out and received a partial credit for a night’s stay on our credit card. Didn’t even ask, they just did it. Thanks Mystic KOA!

We’ll definitely be back. This is a great place to stay when visiting the coastal Connecticut/Rhode Island area.

    Indian Island County Park

    Great location, beautiful views

Wonderful weekend visit in the off season. Site was level, pretty spacious and easy to back into. Campsites are located close enough to the beach/marsh. Multiple playgrounds for the kids although they were closed due to Covid. No sewers sites that I could tell, and water was off because we were a week shy of the season opening. Needed to move to dump station prior to leaving (2 night visit) and had to drive to fill the fresh water tank once while there. Nice neighbors. Dog friendly. People obeyed the quiet hours. I have not one complaint. There were hiking trails and geocaching on site. 4 stars bc no sewer at the campsite and we like full hook ups and honestly I’m guessing this is a county rule but the playgrounds could’ve been open. Outside and socially distanced after dealing with Covid for a whole year and most local parks and playgrounds being open since last May... that was upsetting. All in all we had a great weekend. Close to the LI aquarium as well! Many stores and a golf course near by too!

    Yogi Bear’s Jellystone Park in Sturbridge - [CLOSED}

    Pine lake , Sturbridge Ma.

I’m told that this used to be Jellystone.

It’s now called Pine Lake Rv and cottages.

Not knowing what the previous campground was like I can’t compare. But the new owners surely did a total revamp. There is approximately 30 cottages and many pull through and back in sites for any size RV.

The bathroom/showers were all new and very nice and clean. It seems to be very family friendly. There’s an 8 acre lake with kayaks and fishing, a basketball court,   a game pavilion and a well stocked store. The RV sites are   spacious and pretty close to near perfect level.

The problems I came across was there were very few places to dispose of camp trash, I had to actually walk around looking for one. The camp store doesn’t open until 9:00AM and closes at 4:00PM

If you can, try and NOT stay on the back upper level ( the 700 ) spots. It’s around 100 feet from a very busy road and loud !

    Black Rock State Park Campground

    A nice family friendly campground

This is a nice family friendly campground that makes for easy trips. There are a variety of sites available, from open field sites to more wooded and private areas. The campground also has a lake for swimming, trails for hiking, and some nice quiet areas for fishing. Well maintained bathrooms, with available showers, are also spread throughout the grounds. Not pet friendly unfortunately.

    Wolf's Den Family Campground

    Perfect location central in Connecticut

This place is off Route 9 in Connecticut on the east side of the Connecticut River (major RT 9 highway is on west side). You need to cross the river via bridge to Goodspeed Opera house and past to get to the RV campground. Nearby attractions are Gillette Castle and Goodspeed Opera. The campground itself is realy nice. Cable TV at most sites. Only electric 30 or 50A, and water; but there are a few dumpstations around in the camp. Very peaceful. There are activities on Friday and Saturday (like Bingo). Great store with extended hours. The camp staff will help you with anything. Really long or tall RV will need to stay close to the front of the campground, as typical older campground is not designed for 40 foot long or 10 foot high campers.

    Aces High RV Park

    Peaceful

Well organized campground with both water front back in sites as well as large pull throughs. Pull through sites also have lots of space between them so you don't feel like you are on top of the neighbors. Sites and roads are a pea gravel material and each site has large grassy areas around it. It was a quiet area with ponds and creeks and a generally relaxing setting. It has a clean playground and well maintained pool as well as some walking paths, large grassy areas, pavilion and volleyball court. All sites but one (#67) are full hook up. Some seasonal sites but all were tasteful and not trashy looking. We enjoyed the shade trees on our site (#3) and noticed many sites had similar trees, but the owner keeps them trimmed to not interfere when parking on your site. There is also a creek area for dog swimming. Our two labs loved it! Local kayaking areas and about 30 min to Foxwoods Casino, even closer to Mohegan Sun. Mystic Seaport and Mystic Aquarium are also not too far. Nearby (5min drive) is also a fun looking place for mini golf. Will definitely be back!

Guide to Portland

RV camping near Portland, Connecticut offers access to numerous campgrounds within a 30-mile radius. The region sits in the Connecticut River Valley at approximately 300 feet above sea level, with mild summer temperatures averaging 75-85°F from June through September. Most campgrounds in the area operate seasonally, typically closing after Columbus Day weekend.

What to do

Amusement park access: Lake Compounce Campground is adjacent to New England's oldest continuously operating amusement park. "This is attached to an amusement park but far enough away not to be a bother. If ever in the area again we will definitely stay again," notes one camper who appreciated the convenience without the noise.

Water activities: Many campgrounds feature ponds for recreation. At Aces High RV Park, visitors enjoy "ponds and creeks and a generally relaxing setting" with "a creek area for dog swimming. Our two labs loved it!" according to one reviewer who stayed at the park.

Hiking options: The region offers woodland trails accessible from several campgrounds. At Thousand Trails Sturbridge, campers report "a huge area of woods with a walking trail starting at the edge of the campground. I enjoyed stretching my legs," making it suitable for day hikes without leaving the property.

What campers like

Clean facilities: Campers consistently mention the cleanliness of bathrooms and shower facilities. One reviewer at Lake Compounce Campground stated, "Restrooms are clean and spacious. Showers are great. Whoever planned this campground is/was a camper."

Recreational amenities: On-site recreation features heavily in positive reviews. Salem Farms Campground offers "2 pools and lots of games that they provide the equipment for for free," according to a camper who noted it was "the quietest campground we've ever stayed in" during weekday visits.

Proximity to attractions: Many campers appreciate the central location for regional exploration. One visitor at Sun Outdoors Mystic shared, "This park is in a great location for exploring Mystic. You are close to downtown, the aquarium, Mystic Seaport and other attractions."

What you should know

Site configuration: Be aware of how sites are arranged at each campground. At Totoket Valley RV Park, "Each site has grass and a picnic table," while campers should note this park does not permit campfires, unlike most other area campgrounds.

Seasonal schedules: Most campgrounds operate only part of the year. Thousand Trails Sturbridge operates from "April 10 to October 25," while Salem Farms runs "May 1 to Columbus Day," affecting late-season availability.

WiFi and connectivity: Cell service varies significantly between locations. One camper at Thousand Trails Sturbridge noted, "Cell reception is not great. Camp link Wifi for a fee is workable unless you need to do zoom calls," which could impact remote workers or those needing reliable internet.

Tips for camping with families

Playground access: Choose campgrounds with kid-friendly facilities. At Salem Farms Campground, families report, "Loved the tent area and how close it was for the kids to use the pool and facilities. Everything was clean and well kept. We felt safe allowing the kids to go ride bikes and go mini golfing."

Activity planning: Many campgrounds offer organized events. One visitor at Countryside RV Park noted it's a "Beautiful, family owned & run, quiet, large sites" park, though another camper mentioned it has "limited child activities" so bring your own entertainment.

Swimming options: Pools are available at several campgrounds but not all. "They have a small playground, activities, tennis court, basketball. Not to mention its next to the amusement park," reports a Lake Compounce camper, though they noted "it would have been nice if they had a place to swim (in the camping area) besides for at the main park."

Tips from RVers

Site layouts: RV campers should research site configurations before booking. Some campgrounds like Lake Compounce feature "long pull thrus. You will face your neighbor door to door but enough room between you don't feel invaded," according to a recent visitor.

Hookup variations: Not all parks offer full hookups. While Aces High RV Park provides complete services, Lake Compounce "does not have sewer hookups, but does have a dump station" as noted by an RV camper.

Maneuverability: Consider access roads when bringing larger rigs. At Salem Farms Campground, one visitor noted potential challenges: "Our only complaint would be the spot they put the 5th wheel our cousin brought. It was too close to the road, and they wouldn't let him pull in so we were facing each other even though it would have easily worked out."
