    Blydenburgh County Park

    Big Rig Camping in Blydenburgh

We have a 42 ft 5th wheel toy hauler. A few Big Rig spots are available, but this is a Suffock Co Campground that is not well maintained. 2 miles of the Road have many areas of missing blacktop making a very rough ride with low branches. The dump station is basically not accessible to a big rig. Most of the longer sites were very difficult to level.

    Indian Island County Park

    Great location, beautiful views

Wonderful weekend visit in the off season. Site was level, pretty spacious and easy to back into. Campsites are located close enough to the beach/marsh. Multiple playgrounds for the kids although they were closed due to Covid. No sewers sites that I could tell, and water was off because we were a week shy of the season opening. Needed to move to dump station prior to leaving (2 night visit) and had to drive to fill the fresh water tank once while there. Nice neighbors. Dog friendly. People obeyed the quiet hours. I have not one complaint. There were hiking trails and geocaching on site. 4 stars bc no sewer at the campsite and we like full hook ups and honestly I’m guessing this is a county rule but the playgrounds could’ve been open. Outside and socially distanced after dealing with Covid for a whole year and most local parks and playgrounds being open since last May... that was upsetting. All in all we had a great weekend. Close to the LI aquarium as well! Many stores and a golf course near by too!

    A nice family friendly campground

This is a nice family friendly campground that makes for easy trips. There are a variety of sites available, from open field sites to more wooded and private areas. Wolf's Den Family Campground

    Perfect location central in Connecticut

This place is off Route 9 in Connecticut on the east side of the Connecticut River (major RT 9 highway is on west side). You need to cross the river via bridge to Goodspeed Opera house and past to get to the RV campground. Nearby attractions are Gillette Castle and Goodspeed Opera. The campground itself is realy nice. Cable TV at most sites. Only electric 30 or 50A, and water; but there are a few dumpstations around in the camp. Very peaceful. There are activities on Friday and Saturday (like Bingo). Great store with extended hours. The camp staff will help you with anything. Really long or tall RV will need to stay close to the front of the campground, as typical older campground is not designed for 40 foot long or 10 foot high campers.

    Aces High RV Park

    Peaceful

Well organized campground with both water front back in sites as well as large pull throughs. Pull through sites also have lots of space between them so you don't feel like you are on top of the neighbors. Sites and roads are a pea gravel material and each site has large grassy areas around it. It was a quiet area with ponds and creeks and a generally relaxing setting. It has a clean playground and well maintained pool as well as some walking paths, large grassy areas, pavilion and volleyball court. All sites but one (#67) are full hook up. Some seasonal sites but all were tasteful and not trashy looking. We enjoyed the shade trees on our site (#3) and noticed many sites had similar trees, but the owner keeps them trimmed to not interfere when parking on your site. There is also a creek area for dog swimming. Our two labs loved it! Local kayaking areas and about 30 min to Foxwoods Casino, even closer to Mohegan Sun. Mystic Seaport and Mystic Aquarium are also not too far. Nearby (5min drive) is also a fun looking place for mini golf. Will definitely be back!

    Hammonasset State Park Campground

large family friendly campground with beach access

Hammonasset Beach State Park Campground is huge, family-friendly, and has direct beach access from the campground. There is no lifeguard on duty at the campground beach but lifeguards patrol the beach a mile or so north within the park. Smaller (car-top) boats can be launched from this area as well.

The campsites do NOT include a fire pit (or grill). You must bring your own or there are fire tub rentals available at the campground store.

The park includes a Nature Center complete with exhibits and activities, and hiking trails. Bald eagles can be seen on the nature reserve.

Expect long lines at the state park entrance fee station on the weekend if the weather is nice.

Guide to Bethany

Bethany, Connecticut camping areas offer diverse accommodation options within a region of rolling hills and mixed hardwood forests at elevations between 400-700 feet. Seasonal conditions vary significantly, with summer temperatures typically reaching 80-85°F during peak camping months. Most campgrounds operate from May through October, with limited year-round facilities available.

What to do

Lake activities: swimming and boating: At Rocky Neck State Park Campground, campers enjoy both freshwater and saltwater recreation. "Beach is a short drive on site and the showers were one site over. I had a great time," notes Carli V. The park features multiple water access points with varying amenities.

Hiking trails: wooded paths and viewpoints: The region offers varied terrain for hiking enthusiasts. At Clarence Fahnestock State Park Campground, "there are lots of nice hikes directly from the campground," says Sammi A. Most trails are moderate in difficulty, with clearly marked paths through mixed hardwood forests.

Fishing opportunities: multiple species: Several campgrounds provide fishing access for beginners and experienced anglers. Rudd Pond at Taconic State Park offers "plenty of fishing access from shore and you can rent a boat for the whole day to fish on the water," according to Rosie R. Largemouth bass are common catches during summer months.

What campers like

Privacy between sites: Many campers appreciate campgrounds with good spacing. At Aces High RV Park, "Pull through sites also have lots of space between them so you don't feel like you are on top of the neighbors. Sites and roads are a pea gravel material and each site has large grassy areas around it," writes April L.

Clean bathroom facilities: Well-maintained facilities are consistently praised. At Prospect Mountain Campground, the grounds and amenities receive positive reviews: "The grounds were absolutely beautiful and very well maintained! Pool was lovely and refreshing," says Megin F.

Seasonal amenities: Campers appreciate the different seasonal activities available. "The sites were long so even though you face your neighbor, the sites were long enough that our door wasn't directly across from our neighbor. The staff were very friendly and they had some activities like bingo and corn hole the weekend we were there," reports Tina about her stay at Lake Compounce Campground.

What you should know

Site variations: Campsite quality and amenities vary significantly between locations and within campgrounds. At Branch Brook Campground, "Spaces were decent sized. We were in site 16 and it was on the creek which was a decent view and gave us plenty of space to sit outside and for our dog to have space to roam," notes Charlie & Danielle B.

Limited office hours: Some campgrounds have restricted staffing, particularly during off-peak seasons. Branch Brook Campground reviews mention, "It was closed early in the day when we arrived and we never saw anyone who appeared to work for this campground so I can imagine it could have been difficult to get any assistance if you needed it."

Wildlife considerations: Prepare for local wildlife interactions at many campgrounds. Campers at Rocky Neck State Park mention skunks are common, while Lake Compounce Campground reviews warn: "As I am set up for bed I see one other large green tent that looks deserted. People left their left over food scraps in the grass by my camp so not only has my dog been eating it, I also hear coyotes."

Tips for camping with families

Children's activities: Many rv parks near Bethany, Connecticut provide kid-friendly amenities. At Kettletown State Park Campground, "the kids can run around until their energy out for the night! Plus you would see awesome stars during the nighttime," says Jennifer H. Most family-oriented campgrounds schedule weekend activities during summer months.

Swimming options: Several campgrounds feature swimming areas suitable for families with young children. Prospect Mountain Campground offers "a great pool, playground and pond for fishing. They also have a nice little store and snack bar. There is also a mini golf course and a mining area where kids can 'mine' 'gems'. Kids had a blast!" reports Sandra S.

Safety considerations: Pay attention to specific hazards noted by other campers. At Branch Brook Campground, "Our site had a 'deck' outside which was great but it had some very weak boards that you could have easily fallen through. They did have mats over those spots but it still felt very unsafe to walk on." Most campgrounds require adult supervision at water features.

Tips from RVers

Site leveling requirements: RVers emphasize checking site conditions before arrival. Gentiles Campground reviews mention, "Roads were narrow and steep and hard to maneuver bigger trailers and rigs." Prepare leveling equipment for all rv parks in Bethany, Connecticut region.

Hookup reliability: Evaluate hookup quality when selecting campgrounds. At Lake Compounce Campground, "Very well maintained and friendly staff will stay again when in the area. Does not have sewer hookups, but does have a dump station," notes Ray B. Call ahead to confirm current availability of services.

Seasonal road conditions: Access roads can be challenging after rain or during early/late season camping. Totoket Valley RV Park, located in North Branford, is described as "Small campground with good electrical, clean water, sewer and a friendly owner. Each site has grass and a picnic table... It's a perfect campground for seeing the local area or even catching the train to New York City," according to Tara N.
