Dispersed camping near Austin, Colorado offers numerous options beyond established campgrounds. The area sits at elevations ranging from 5,000 to 8,000 feet, creating varied conditions across seasons with summer daytime temperatures typically reaching 85-90°F. Campers can access multiple BLM lands with established fire rings and level sites, though terrain varies significantly from riverside locations to high desert settings.
What to do
Hike to viewpoints: Black Canyon Dispersed Camping provides excellent access to nearby trails. "Hiking trails [are] nearby. If you have a dog, there are very few areas where they are allowed at this time," notes Mary S. about accessing rim trails from nearby South Rim Campground.
Fish for trout: Gunnison Gorge National Conservation Area offers prime fishing opportunities directly from camp. "Right along the river, absolutely beautiful. I thought the dirt road getting there could be a little scary. It's one car width and has some drop offs next to it," reports B.S., who camped at one of the riverside sites.
Explore canyon roads: The roads themselves offer an adventure, with Escalante Canyon Road Dispersed providing both access and entertainment. "The road to the camp site from the I-50 road is rather long (12 miles, cca 30 min), but very easy and quite picturesque," reports Wild Berries B., who enjoyed biking along the road.
What campers like
Natural wildlife viewing: Deer frequently visit South Rim Campground, providing memorable encounters. "Deer roaming through the campground and one hung out by my site for awhile," writes Tori K. about her experience camping there.
Night sky visibility: The remote nature of these areas creates exceptional stargazing opportunities. Deborah D. notes, "Absence of light pollution means awesome night skies!" at North Rim Campground, where the 8,200-foot elevation enhances viewing conditions.
River access: Many sites at Gunnison Gorge National Conservation offer direct water access. Nathan M. shares that he found "Grate spot on the river" with "surprisingly good Verizon signal at the spot we stayed, the ones more west were significantly slower."
What you should know
Road conditions vary: Access to many pet-friendly dispersed sites requires navigating unpaved roads that can become challenging. "The road is bumpy. Looks like a muddy road with deep mud tracks dried up and it's difficult to navigate," explains Ismenia I. about accessing Black Canyon Dispersed Camping.
Early arrival recommended: Park campgrounds fill quickly during peak season. "I arrived right at 1 to make sure I could get a spot the Friday of Father's Day weekend. By 5:30, all the spots were full," advises Jordan L. regarding North Rim Campground.
Weather fluctuations: The high elevation areas experience significant temperature changes and potential storms. "Be prepared for any type of weather. We had a wild thunder, lightning and wind storm with violent downdrafts—typical for this country," warns Deborah D. about camping near Black Canyon.
Tips for camping with families
Look for level sites: When bringing children, prioritize sites with flat surfaces and natural boundaries. Wild Berries B. recommends Escalante Canyon Road, noting "Once you pass the private land and get to the first campsites continue further. There are plenty more to go, some with access to the water."
Watch for cacti: Some areas contain hidden hazards for children and pets. Dolly L. warns about Escalante Canyon Road: "There was a lot of small hidden vicious cacti, we were afraid of letting the dogs out."
Consider reservoir options: For family-friendly amenities, Iron Creek Campground offers established facilities. "Great loops for biking with kids, very clean campsites and nice bathrooms, great trails for biking or walking between the camp loops, nice reservoir for water activities," recommends Carrie R.
Tips from RVers
Site selection matters: For larger rigs, scout potential sites before committing. "Some sites you are really close to your neighbors and don't have a lot of privacy. If you have a large RV or camper, there may not be a lot of sites that work for you, check the photos and use the length filter when looking at sites!" advises Tori K. regarding South Rim Campground.
Concrete pads available: For level, secure RV setup, Uncompaghre River Resort offers premium surfaces. "The spots are level concrete pad with full hook up. Most spots have shade and space between on the outer ring is about 10 feet each side," notes Lisa A., highlighting the comfort this provides for rigs.
Check clearance requirements: Low-clearance RVs should avoid certain access roads. "The access is bumpy. Looks like a muddy road with deep mud tracks dried up and it's difficult to navigate. We have a travato and bounced all over but we could make it and find a level spot," reports Ismenia I. about reaching dispersed sites.
