Enjoyed an evening here. Not much shade, you will be exposed to the sun and any rain. Saw some sedans there but I don't know that I would attempt it. 4WD want necessary but I recommend something with a little clearance.
Had a great night here. Stayed close to the mountain so I had great shade but if you're after views I think you should stay close to the highway. There are tons of spots and privacy. I saw several sedans but I'd be hesitant if it were me.
Stayed a couple of nights in different sites. I would recommend a 4-wheel drive and maybe something with a little clearance. It's pretty rocky so take your time. My site was large and I couldn't see or hear any neighboring sites. I had a handful of others drive by but overall it was quiet. I would absolutely stay here again if I was in the area. The nights were gorgeous and quiet.
I'm basing my review mainly off of the other free dispersed sites in the area. It isn't that this place is bad, but this wouldn't make my top 10 of dispersed sites in the area. I would absolutely stay here again, but it would be a last resort. Also I counted about 4 different turnoffs from the highway stretched across a half mile so check them all for sites because they weren't all joined.
Pros
- Free
- The spots are easily accessible from the paved highway. That being said it's pretty tight and steep in spots, I wouldn't dare try pulling thing of size into these sites.
- Stream accessible. I stayed right on the stream and hung out next to it for a few hours the night I was there.
- Fire rings at most sites that I saw.
Cons
- Not much privacy between sites.
- Since it's right off the highway there can be some noise issues.
- For a place tucked away in the Collegiate Peaks it's sad that the views aren't better.
- Sites weren't very level.
Pros
- Easy access. Dirt road pretty well maintained, I wouldn't count on making it during the winter without something serious.
- Great views and access to a stream.
- Great sites and fire rings.
- Access to trails nearby and Buena Vista if you need to supplies.
Cons
- Little to no privacy. This place is no secret so you will have neighbors and if you don't arrive early enough you might not get a spot.
Got a spot right on the river and it was amazing. It was just across the bridge so I could see the traffic but it wasn't too bad thankfully. The road in was in good shape with no major bumps or holes, 2WD will work fine. Would definitely stay again.
Stayed on a Monday night in October and had the place all to myself. If weather is bad I could see the road being an issue but otherwise 2wd with a little clearance is fine. Enjoyed my stay but with the close proximity to other sites I could see that being an issue on a busy night.
- Plenty of campsites to choose from and accessible with 2WD (at least during the summer). Arrived mid-afternoon on a Friday and had our pick of the sites, only saw one other group setup ahead of us.
- Most sites appeared to be just off the road so you will see others driving by, and some sites have close by neighbors so keep that in mind if you're looking for something more private.
- Livestock do graze in the area, we saw a herd of cows that initially we thought were bears so we had a split second of worry before realizing what they were.
- Some great views on the drive but not much from our campsite.
Would definitely stay here again.
