Needle Creek Reservoir sits alongside its namesake waterway in Gunnison National Forest, operating seasonally from mid-June through mid-October under US Forest Service management. The established campground provides basic toilet facilities and positions campers near both the creek and reservoir waters. Located roughly nine miles from the small community of Sargents, the site offers access to campgrounds around Sargents for those planning extended stays in the area. Campers seeking a straightforward base camp with water access will find the essentials here, though amenities remain minimal compared to more developed forest service locations.
Description
Elevation: 8830' Needle Creek Reservoir lies between Highways 50 and 114 in the Cochetopa Hills along the headwaters of Needle Creek. This reservoir was constructed in 1962 for irrigation water storage. Its low elevation, 8,830 feet, and easy access make it a favorite fishing area for many. Fishing is usually good at this site, where rainbow and brook trout average ten to eleven inches. Boats are allowed in the reservoir, but most people fish from shore with good success.
