We ended up here pretty late on a Thursday night and luckily found a spot. The campsites are close together so that is not great but they are clean at least. There are awesome views from the rim if you are able to get a site on the edge.
We would have loved to check it out but the coordinates put you at a bend in the road with no clue where to go. We ended up camping at Mingus Mountain and that was pretty decent.
There are many sites but they get abused. Trash is plentiful and we ended up near a 50+ person fiesta complete with a loud speaker that went until all hours of the night.
The campsites are big and plentiful but I think they are used by locals as there is a bunch of trash. Not that is had to be locals but I don't think the dispersed community would do that.
We are car camping/tent, RV's couldn't make it is the spot we have at least.
I would rate it better but we have been at so many other campsites in AZ and CO that are definitely better.
Hopefully someday we will have a different experience in NM but hey, it smells good and is pretty. Stop by for a night and see how you feel.
What we think is the best site is to the left and then up to a little hill (any AWD or 4WD could make it, its the only one we saw with a view besides trees (not that they aren't great!) but for free I would take it for sure 😊
We came on a holiday weekend so the main camp area was full. We carried our stuff down the trail a bit and made a temporary site. It was the best ever because we woke up with views and everyone else woke up to busy hikers getting ready at the crack of dawn. Ha! It would still be beautiful over there, don't get me wrong, just trying to keep myself jazzed about making a bunch of trips back to the car.
