Horse Flats Campground sits in the Angeles National Forest at 5,500 feet elevation and serves as a hub for equestrian enthusiasts visiting the San Gabriel Mountains. The campground's terrain consists of pine forest and chaparral vegetation, with summer daytime temperatures averaging 75-85°F and winter nights dropping below freezing. Access requires driving on Angeles Crest Highway (Highway 2), which can be narrow with sharp turns in some sections.
What to do
Bouldering adventures: Campers can access numerous climbing routes directly from Horse Flats. "Nice place to stay for climbing - there is mostly bouldering in the area, with some trad stuff. Plenty of sites!" notes Kathleen L. at Horse Flats Campground.
Mountain biking trails: Ride directly from camp on fire roads and singletrack through the Angeles Forest. At O'Neill Regional Park, "There are a number of trails in the park for hiking and mountain biking. I usually ride to Caspers from the campsite or Trabruco creak up to Holy Jim," says Mike G.
Lake fishing opportunities: Several lakes within 30-45 minutes of Upland offer fishing options. "Lake Perris was a fun and clean place to camp at! We did some fishing, bike riding, the water was clear, and my kids loved it," writes Lauren R. about her experience at Lake Perris State Recreation Area.
What campers like
Natural wildlife viewing: The area's diverse ecosystems support many animal species. "Lots of wildlife sighting in the park -- snakes, deer," reports Chanel C. at Ronald W. Caspers Wilderness Park, another equestrian-friendly destination near Upland.
Peaceful forest atmosphere: Despite proximity to urban areas, many campgrounds maintain a natural setting. "ONeil is a great little park that's tucked away among the urban sprawl of Orange County. Once in the park you feel like you're far out in the wilderness," writes Berton M.
Stargazing opportunities: The higher elevation at Horse Flats creates better night sky viewing. "Sleeping with a completely open tent and viewing the night sky was amazing. Moon lit the entire mountain up," notes Justin B.
What you should know
Limited water access: Many horse campgrounds in the Angeles Forest lack running water. "Bring all your water with you. There is no running water at this campground," advises Les R.
Seasonal conditions: Winter access can be challenging at higher elevations. "We camped here this weekend, which is the latest we've gone before the winter months... Even though it was 79 degrees in the day, temperature got down to 54 at night," shares Les R.
Fire restrictions: Wildfire danger affects campfire policies. At Mojave Narrows Regional Park, another equestrian camping option, visitors should check current fire restrictions as "this is one of the only parts of the river to flow above ground year round. As a result, a small forest of Cottonwood trees abounds," making fire safety critical according to Megan S.
Tips for camping with families
Playground access: Some campgrounds offer dedicated play areas. "Very well maintained campgrounds with quality facilities located throughout... Good cell reception, fire pits, charcoal bbqs, nice tree's etc," notes James about O'Neill Regional Park.
Nature programs: Educational opportunities exist at several parks. "There is a cute playground for children, a nature center where you can enjoy viewing through the telescope overlooking almost all of the 8,000 acres of the Caspers WP," explains Johnny G.
Kid-friendly trails: Several areas feature shorter hiking options suitable for children. "Great playground for children. Recently paved streets (perfect for scootering, skating, biking). Great playground for children. Easy and fun 'Story Trail' hike for children. The hike features a new book every month, each page is mounted to a placard along the trail," explains Johnny G.
Tips from RVers
Limited hookup options: Most horse campgrounds near Upland have minimal RV amenities. "Very well maintained and clean campsites! We were site261 cottonwood. Only downside was that the ranger said to lock up bikes and be careful leaving out items because a local has been coming in stealing," cautions Marcella D. about Rancho Jurupa RV Park, which offers equestrian access nearby.
Levelness challenges: Many mountain campgrounds require leveling equipment. "The sites are all uneven. Every camper we saw had to do major leveling efforts," reports Brian C. about a nearby campground.
Generator restrictions: Check noise policies at each location. "You can be camping 20-30 mins away from Irvine. Facilities are clean and well maintained. We stayed at 42 which was right across the from the bathrooms, the noise was manageable," notes k K.
