Best Campgrounds near Rancho Palos Verdes, CA

Camping options near Rancho Palos Verdes are concentrated along the Southern California coastline, with several established RV parks and campgrounds within driving distance. The region includes beach-oriented camping facilities like Dockweiler Beach RV Park in Playa Del Rey and Golden Shore RV Resort in Long Beach, offering full hookup sites for recreational vehicles and limited tent camping opportunities. Most developed campgrounds provide amenities such as showers, restrooms, and electricity, catering primarily to RV travelers seeking coastal access while maintaining proximity to urban areas.

Access to camping facilities varies seasonally, with many coastal campgrounds requiring advance reservations, particularly during summer months. Bolsa Chica State Beach Campground operates from January through November, while other facilities like Malibu Creek State Park remain open year-round. "Right on the beach with clean bathrooms. Hot showers for men but not for women...probably it was just a problem in the morning," noted one visitor about Dockweiler Beach RV Park. Beach camping regulations are strictly enforced, with fire restrictions in place at certain locations and limited parking for non-camperized vehicles. The urban setting means airplane noise affects some sites, particularly those near LAX flight paths.

Campers consistently highlight oceanfront views as the primary draw of the area's mixed-use campgrounds. The beachfront location of Dockweiler allows visitors to step directly onto the sand, with fire rings available for evening gatherings. Though many sites feature parking lot-style arrangements with limited privacy, the proximity to shoreline access compensates for the close quarters. Several visitors mentioned clean facilities as a significant benefit, with one camper noting that Newport Dunes RV Resort offers "great shaded area right on the water" with paved roads and electrical hookups. For those seeking more natural surroundings, Malibu Creek State Park Campground provides a less developed alternative with both drive-in and walk-in tent sites approximately 25 miles northwest of Rancho Palos Verdes.

    O'Neill Regional Park

    Nice campground

It's a very nice campground about an hours drive from the beach and other tourist attractions. Usually sold out every weekend. The road to get there can be dangerous. Some wannabe race drivers and commuters avoiding crowded freeways will NOT tolerate anyone doing the speed limit and will pass regardless of the danger.

    Hollywood RV Park

    Themed Park!

First of all, staff was amazing. We were originally supposed to arrive on a Tuesday and we’re not able to make it. Staff shifted our reservation instead of us eating the missed night cost. Also super accommodating allowing us to extend a day longer last minute. Park is tight quarters with 200 spots. Two laundry rooms/bathrooms with showers on site, plus a cute little dog park! We stayed for three nights. Every “road” in the park is themed with California or Hollywood themed decorations and murals. We were parked right next to a Mister Roger’s mural across from the laundry/bathrooms. My only complaint in the noise level at times which is not from the park itself. Helicopters would fly over randomly, sometimes at night and it could be annoying when trying to sleep. Otherwise, absolute GEM of a place!

    Pacific touch :)

Nice place very close to the beach with amazing Pacific view. All connections in place; sites very close to each other; a bit loud due to airport nearby. Very friendly staff. In overall good experience and recommend it :)

    Bonelli Bluffs

Wish we could stay longer this trip

We chose Bonelli for our shakedown trip in our new trailer (first time RVers). SO quiet. Numerous residents, but spots are mostly keep up nicely. Our rental spot has 3 trees, a picnic table, a firepit, level parking(!) and full hookups. We will be back for sure, especially since it's less than an hour from home.

    Malibu Creek State Park Campground

Awesome Mountain View’s and spacious sites!

Every friendly people. Nice open sites that are good for people who just want to be isolated. Showers and bathrooms available. No charging unless you can find an open one in the park. Site 27 is a very good site.

    Monte Cristo Campground

    Nice Campground but Fire Restrictions!

Monte Cristo is a nice campground not far from home. My husband and I visited this campsite for the first time just for one night. There was a fire restriction. No bonfires, no cooking on stoves and there was no water due to a leak. The bathroom that I was using I give it a 2 star.

Guide to Rancho Palos Verdes

Limited camping facilities near Rancho Palos Verdes cater primarily to RV owners, with few tent-only options available. The coastal location between urban Los Angeles and natural beach areas creates a unique camping environment at elevations near sea level. Campers often contend with seasonal reservation requirements and proximity to flight paths, particularly at sites closer to LAX.

What to do

Beach activities across PCH: At Waterfront RV Park, visitors have immediate ocean access. "You're not on the beach but literally on the other side of pacific coast highway you are there. They have a great pool, maintained laundry rooms bathrooms and showers separated by men and woman," notes one reviewer at Waterfront RV Park.

Hiking trails near canyons: Malibu Creek State Park offers multiple hiking options within driving distance of Rancho Palos Verdes. "The state park is a former movie set and is filled with easily accessible trails for hiking and some for mountain biking. The primary trails were open fire roads with off-shoots to lakes, pools, meadows, and more," according to one visitor who stayed at Malibu Creek State Park Campground.

Water sports and rentals: Many coastal campgrounds provide equipment rentals for water activities. "Had so much fun here today kayaking! It's a great place to enjoy the beach," mentions a visitor about Bolsa Chica State Beach Campground.

What campers like

Protected beach camping locations: Some campsites offer sheltered positions that buffer coastal weather. "It's been chilly so being protected by the canyon is pretty sweet," notes a camper at Malibu Beach RV Park.

Clean facilities despite urban setting: Campgrounds in this area maintain good standards despite heavy use. "The staff keeps the grounds clean, clean bathrooms, heated pool and hot tub, and other fun things to do like horse shoes. We would stay here again if we come back to this area," reports a camper at Golden Shore RV Resort.

Access to transportation networks: The proximity to urban areas provides camping options with multiple transit connections. "We stayed in spot 2118 and it had a nice view of the bay. This location is close to good shopping and great dining options," mentions a visitor at Newport Dunes RV Resort.

What you should know

Flight paths affect noise levels: Several campgrounds experience aircraft noise due to proximity to LAX. "We loved this spot next to the beach. We got used to the planes, but they are certainly jarring at first," explains a visitor at Dockweiler Beach RV Park.

Tight spacing at premium locations: Most oceanfront campgrounds maximize capacity with close site arrangements. "The spaces aren't huge so if you have a big rig or large trailer it will be tight. Most trailers parked their tow vehicle perpendicular to the space and some barely fit," reports a camper at Bolsa Chica State Beach.

Seasonal restrictions on tent camping: Many campgrounds near Rancho Palos Verdes prohibit tent camping entirely or have limitations. "No tents but trailers and RV's are welcome. Imagine camping at the beach with all the amenities and close to everything you'd want to do in SoCal," explains a camper at Bolsa Chica State Beach Campground.

Tips for camping with families

Recreational programs for children: Some campgrounds offer structured activities for younger visitors. "We stay here every year. They have activities for the kids like arts and crafts, an inflatable obstacle course or you can rent paddle boards or watch a movie on the beach," recommends a camper at Newport Dunes RV Resort.

Security considerations: Urban-adjacent camping requires attention to security measures. "Security is very good and felt very safe, especially considering the location. The grounds are kept in excellent condition - very clean and secure," notes a visitor at Golden Shore RV Resort.

Wildlife viewing opportunities: Despite urban proximity, natural wildlife remains visible. "The wildlife is abundant. There is plenty of birdwatching, and coyotes were wandering through the park and campground without fear. On a hike right out of the park a few hundred yards, I came across a pair of bobcats," reports a camper at Malibu Creek State Park.

Tips from RVers

Dry camping vs. hookup sections: Several campgrounds offer both services with different experiences. "The RV park has a hookup area and a dry camping area. The hookups are full of large rigs, very close one with another, in a parking lot style. The dry camp provides much more space, but only relatively small RVs," explains a visitor at Seabreeze At Seal Beach.

RV-specific seasonal discounts: Lower rates may be available during non-summer months at some campgrounds. "We've stayed here about 3 times. Last few times has been lovely. The location they placed us in was where we were last year and it's perfect," shares a repeat visitor at Golden Shore RV Resort.

Site selection strategy: Choosing specific sites can significantly affect experience quality. "Review of dry campervan section of park only, which seemed considerably more quiet and less chaotic than the big RV area. Best sites are 125-128," advises a camper at Dockweiler Beach RV Park.
