The Nipomo area spans the southern edge of San Luis Obispo County with typical coastal marine influence temperatures ranging from 55-75°F during summer months. Winter camping often experiences morning fog that burns off by midday. Most pet-friendly campgrounds near Nipomo sit between 100-400 feet elevation, creating moderate terrain for walking dogs while offering proximity to both beach and inland trails.
What to do
Wildlife viewing near dunes: Oceano Campground provides unique wildlife encounters including monarch butterflies during migration season. "Awesome campsite. We went in January and had no idea about the Monarch Butterflies. About 300 feet from the campsite is a grove of trees where thousands of Monarchs fly and mate," explains Garrett M. Bird watching opportunities also exist throughout the season.
Beach driving access: Oceano Dunes State Vehicular Recreation Area allows vehicles directly on the sand for camping. "A vehicle beach with unlimited things to do fishing, offroad sand dunes, hike, camp rv vehicle theres class A B C home made its awesome dogs allowed, after 10pm it's so quite," notes Elijah L. Vehicle permits cost $10 for overnight camping.
Mountain hiking: Lopez Lake Recreation Area offers several trails with wildlife viewing. "There's lots of trails and quite a bit wildlife: squirrels, deer, turkey, and even some mountain lions and bears. The lake is wonderful and usually very mellow," reports Crystal J. Big Falls trail provides a moderately challenging hike through oak forests.
Water activities: Lopez Lake permits kayaking and swimming in designated areas during summer months. "Kayaking and fishing are both nice at Lopez as well. No cell reception, not for us on Verizon anyways, but you can drive about 1/2 mile down the road for it," adds Crystal J. Rental equipment available at the marina store.
What campers like
Protection from winds: Oceano Campground — Pismo State Beach offers sites sheltered from coastal breezes. "The campground was not as cold or windy, since it's behind the dunes. The bathrooms have hot water and Flush toilets. Showers are huge and are self-contained and not in the bathrooms," explains barbara M.
Water-adjacent camping: North Beach Campground provides easy beach access without oceanfront pricing. "It's a short 5 minute walk to the beach from anywhere so that's a huge plus, the park rangers were all very nice while we were there and there's a Monarch butterfly sanctuary within walking distance," notes Alexandra T.
Variety of site types: TV Tower Road Dispersed Camping offers free camping with panoramic views. "The road was a bit sketchy, any 4WD would be fine I think. I took my mini van and camped at a turn out along the road because I was a bit hesitant. The stars are beautiful and it's very quiet and cool," writes Caitlyn R.
Central location: Multiple dog-friendly campgrounds near Nipomo serve as convenient basecamps. "Lots of shade, very green during the spring. Plenty of bathroom everywhere. Very big camp ground," reports Billy W. about Lopez Lake Recreation Area.
What you should know
Insect preparation: Several campgrounds experience seasonal bug activity requiring proper planning. "They're out and about and it's not fun if you're not prepared. There's a Walmart not too far away. After the citronella incense weren't working, we went to Walmart and it was war!" warns barbara M. about mosquitoes at Oceano Campground.
Weather variations: North Beach Campground — Pismo State Beach experiences temperature swings requiring layered clothing. "We stayed in October and it was 90 during the day and around 60 at night. We were tent camping and while better than the neighboring RV park, there were still more RVs than tents," reports Alexandra T.
Road access considerations: Access to TV Tower Road requires appropriate vehicles. "The road up here is indeed a little challenge: first there is pavement but the last 1/3 of the road is dirt only; also very bumpy. We made it through with our van, 2 wheels only haha, but it was rough indeed," cautions Ala B.
Reservation requirements: State parks often fill months in advance during peak seasons. "Just make sure you book in advance! Fills up fast," advises Morgan D. about Morro Bay State Park Campground.
Tips for camping with families
Off-peak scheduling: Avila-Pismo Beach KOA offers better experiences outside summer peaks. "I do not recommend camping here during peak times in the Summer. My advice is to wander here late Spring and Fall while the temperatures are still warm enough to enjoy while beating the crowds!" suggests Erin G.
Educational opportunities: Family-friendly museums supplement outdoor activities. "And within walking distance, there is a Museum of natural history. In the Bayside Café has a good food which is right across the street," notes Wayne S. about Morro Bay State Park.
Kid-focused amenities: Some campgrounds feature dedicated play areas not found at all locations. "Great place, beautiful pool and lawn area and playground for kids. You are also only minutes away from the beach in Avila and great shopping," shares Deanna P. about Avila-Pismo Beach KOA.
Food preparation: Campsites with nearby grocery access simplify family meal planning. "Their store had a lot of items that you might need (groceries and alcohol) and little souvenirs," adds Deanna P.
Tips from RVers
Site selection strategies: Pismo Coast Village RV Resort offers varying quality of sites requiring careful selection. "Check in was quick and efficient. Our site was wide and long enough to park our TT and TV. Site had reasonable privacy. Overall, a clean and quiet place to stay," recommends Patrick J.
Space limitations: Many RV sites require careful navigation. "Tight spaces but great infrastructure. Courteous staff, great store with all replacement parts you might need. Steps away from the ocean," notes Frank P.
Beach driving precautions: Oceano Dunes requires proper vehicle preparation. "I saw multiple people get stuck, mostly 2WD cars and trucks with toy haulers/trailers. Lots of people down to help get people unstuck!" warns Chris C.
Utility connections: Coastal Dunes RV Park provides full hookups at competitive prices. "The sites were flat, but there was no barrier between you and your neighbors. The RV sites looked very cramped but the tent sites seemed adequately spaced for the most part," observes John Y.
