Best Dog-Friendly Camping near Lake Hughes, CA

Joshua Tree Ranch Los Angeles provides tent camping in a natural desert landscape where pets can roam freely with their owners amid Joshua trees and open terrain. Pets are welcome without breed restrictions or dedicated facilities at this primitive campground located about an hour north of Los Angeles. The ranch offers wide open spaces with no designated sites, giving campers and their dogs ample room to spread out. Art Farm Nature Space also allows pets throughout their 10-site property featuring tent, RV, cabin, glamping, and yurt accommodation options. The campground maintains clean bathrooms, drinking water, picnic tables, and trash facilities while permitting pets to join their owners. Oak Flat Campground requires an Adventure Pass ($5 daily or $30 annual) available at the nearby 76 gas station and features well-separated camping spots among trees and boulders.

Dogs can explore hiking trails accessible from several of the pet-friendly campgrounds, though leashing requirements vary by location. Joshua Tree Ranch provides wide-open desert terrain where pets can exercise freely, while Art Farm Nature Space offers hiking paths with beautiful sunset views. Pet owners should pack sufficient water for themselves and their animals, as drinking water is not available at all locations. Summer temperatures in this high desert region can reach dangerous levels for pets, making spring and fall ideal for camping with dogs. The distant hiss of freeway noise at Oak Flat Campground is minimal and generally doesn't disturb pet activities. Wildlife encounters are possible throughout the area, so keeping dogs under control is essential for their safety and to protect local animals and plants.

    Sawmill Campground

A decent place for the night

The road out there is pretty easy if you come from Lake Hughes. Truck or SUV recommended but 4x4 not required.

I showed up right before sunset and the campsite was empty. A lot of the trees are blackened from the last fire and the new growth hasn't come in yet. Hopefully this spring it'll recover more. Tables were nice and there was a vault toilet but I didn't use it. Someone showed up shortly after sunset but it remained quiet. Fire rings were available and in good shape. Not much else in way of amenities.

The views of Mojave were cool, but you are down in the trees a bit, so it's a little blocked. At 8am, a group of adventure bike riders showed up and were pretty loud. This campsite would be a good place for people on dirt bikes and adventure bikes looking for a place to stay. If you're driving a good distance to get out here though, I'd recommend Red Rock or something with more things to do. There werent any good hiking trails nearby. I did end up driving to Burnt Peak. There is an FAA Navigation Aid up there and gorgeous views of the Gorman/Santa Clarita area. Just don't mess with the equipment.

I was hoping to disconnect when I went out there and I ended up with decent 5G service with Verizon... So take that how you want.

Ultimately, good for a night if you're just trying to get away but I think better could be found.

Camping @ Quail Run Ostrich Ranch

    Happy unexpected find

Camping with ostrich’s? I was like no way. It’s true though. You literally get to camp with ostrich’s not too far away from your camp site. Quail run by Lake Hughes is a small family owned private land that has recently been opened up to campers. We have a 15’ pull behind pop up trailer that was easy to travel with to this location. We were greeted by a very friendly Jessica and her husband (sorry I don’t remember his name). They were very kind and showed us to our campsite which was very open and private. We were pleasantly surprised to learn that electricity was provided as we were prepared for dry camping with no hook ups at all. There’s also a bathroom with plumbing and running water.

We decided to take the ostrich tour with Papa Lou at 4pm where we got to get up close to the amazing birds. We were told to not be afraid of them but to respect them. Seeing an ostrich that close makes you realize why scientists call them modern day dinosaurs. Truly remarkable birds. After the tour we were shown to the little shop where you can purchase a few ostrich items including either empty or whole ostrich eggs. They’re huge. One ostrich egg is the equivalent of approximately 12-24 chicken eggs depending on the size. So really one egg makes for a prehistoric breakfast!

Once we were done with the tour we just relaxed at the private campsite where we enjoyed our propane (open flame is understandably not allowed due to fire hazard) fire pit and delicious ostrich egg. No, just kidding we brought chili from home. I would highly recommended Quail Run to beginning campers or anyone else interested in spending the night under the beautiful night sky. : )

    Hollywood RV Park

    Themed Park!

First of all, staff was amazing. We were originally supposed to arrive on a Tuesday and we’re not able to make it. Staff shifted our reservation instead of us eating the missed night cost. Also super accommodating allowing us to extend a day longer last minute. Park is tight quarters with 200 spots. Two laundry rooms/bathrooms with showers on site, plus a cute little dog park! We stayed for three nights. Every “road” in the park is themed with California or Hollywood themed decorations and murals. We were parked right next to a Mister Roger’s mural across from the laundry/bathrooms. My only complaint in the noise level at times which is not from the park itself. Helicopters would fly over randomly, sometimes at night and it could be annoying when trying to sleep. Otherwise, absolute GEM of a place!

    Bear Mountain RV Park

    Bakersfield, CA

My first complaint is there is absolutely no signage into this campground. If not for GPS’s insistence we would have definitely missed. The sites are average for our 43’ motorhome. It’s all sand, no grass. Small grassy dog park which was nice. Soon as we got parked and went outside the smell of sewer greeted us. While it was a beautiful day to have the door open it was just way too unpleasant. There are no picnic tables and it’s pretty basic. The girl in the office was very pleasant. I guess it was ok for a 1 night stay even tho it is a ways off of the 5 fwy.

    Bear Mountain RV Park

What this place lacks in amenities, it more than makes up for with the staff

It took two tries to finally make it here. Our motorhome slide refused to slide. But a month later we made it. Feb 3 and it’s 70 degrees. Nice soft breeze. No pool. But our fur kids said the TWO dog parks made up for it. Judith the resident staff person was a ROCKSTAR in getting our reservations changed and rebooked. The spaces and long and plenty of side room for slides.. that you know…. Slide Definitely making this a come back to park.

    Mountain Valley RV Park

    Quiet & relaxing spot

We needed somewhere to stay for one night as we were finishing up a cross-country drive. We loved how quiet the area was. The grounds are clean and well-kept. Starlink and Verizon service both work great here. Pet-friendly and lots of dogs around while we were here. No complaints!

    Bear Mountain RV Park

    Good single night stop

Stayed here a single night on my way through the Bakersfield area. This RV park has everything you’re going to need and nothing more. An overwhelming majority of the spaces are for monthly residents, and you can tell most of the campers there are seasoned veterans. Right now the office is closed, I believe due to Covid, so you just fill out a form and drop it in a mail slot then pick out one of the sites. The area is quiet enough, but you can definitely hear the soft whir of cars on the highway close by. Camp seems dog friendly with a couple of very small fenced in grassy patches for pets to relieve themselves. There really isn’t much in the area in the way of markets or grocery stores.

Guide to Lake Hughes

The landscape features Joshua trees, open desert terrain and hiking paths with elevations ranging from 3,000 to 4,500 feet. Summer temperatures can exceed 100°F while winter nights often drop below freezing, requiring appropriate camping gear for the significant temperature variations.

What to do

Hike with mountain views: Oak Flat Campground requires an Adventure Pass and offers hiking opportunities with scenic vistas. "When there's snow on the Tehachapi mountains and the San Gabriel mountains, the view is incredible. And it's Southern California, so it doesn't really get cold," notes reviewer Levi P. from Joshua Tree Ranch Los Angeles.

Explore Joshua tree forests: The high desert landscape features unique Joshua tree ecosystems. "I've had some amazing times out here getting away from it all, and there's something about the atmosphere out here that makes the BEST sunsets. You can get right up in the joshua trees," says a visitor to Joshua Tree Ranch Los Angeles.

Stargazing at night: Clear desert skies provide excellent star viewing conditions. A camper at Art Farm Nature Space reports: "Their western Bar is the nicest looking bar anywhere and there is tons of fun activities including hiking with goats, volleyball etc etc. This spot has some amazing view areas to hike to and the stars at night are the best I have seen."

What campers like

Clean facilities: Many campgrounds maintain well-kept amenities despite their remote locations. "Clean coin operated showers, flush toilets, and a nice sink for washing dishes were a quick walk from our camp site.
