Cherry Hill Campground offers pet-friendly camping with large, well-spaced sites along a beautiful creek in Forest Ranch, California. Pets must remain leashed throughout the campground to protect wildlife and other campers. Several additional pet-welcoming options exist within 30-40 minutes of Forest Ranch, including Limesaddle at Lake Oroville State Recreation Area and Philbrook Campground, both accommodating pets with different amenity levels. Cherry Hill provides primitive camping with picnic tables, toilets and trash service but no showers or hookups, making it ideal for tent campers seeking a natural setting with their dogs. Campers report the creek offers excellent swimming spots for both people and leashed pets during warmer months.

Hiking opportunities abound for campers with dogs, with trails accessible about 5 miles up the road from Cherry Hill Campground. The nearby Bidwell Canyon Campground at Lake Oroville offers more developed facilities for RV travelers with pets, including showers, water hookups and sewer connections. Most pet-friendly campgrounds in the region enforce strict leash requirements, with no designated off-leash areas available. Woodson Bridge State Recreation Area provides another dog-friendly camping option with riverside camping, though recent erosion has limited direct water access. For RV campers with pets seeking full hookups, Almond Tree RV Park in Chico offers spacious, level sites with 50-amp service, clean facilities, and easy online check-in, approximately 30 minutes from Forest Ranch.

      Oroville-Feather Falls Casino KOA

      Really nice spot.

Right behind a casino, but a really nice park. Excellent bathrooms and showers. A pool area and dog park. Good Wi-Fi and amenities. A little pricier than what I am used to but it was a really nice place to stay the night. Also awesome treat bad for the dog provided at check in, a really nice touch.

The Parkway RV Resort & Campground

Great spot for an overnight stay

This place was a very nice spot for any overnight stay on the way up to Oregon. The woman at the front desk was friendly and helpful. There is great shade in our site (A6) and a nice table. Kudos for the large dog park, now if I can only solve for the a*holes who can't be bothered to pick up after their dogs at every dog park I've ever visited. Don't expect a ton of privacy here and the sites are all gravel and/or dirt except for strips of grass in between neighbors. With all that said we will definitely use this as an overnight stop again.

      Mt. Lassen-Shingletown KOA

      Wonderful!

So, we already knew we were in trouble. Lassen Volcanic was closed(it was on fire), which is the whole reason we were here. Lots of smoke, but the campground wasn't in danger. We came in anyway. This was the last stop before we started home.

The campground had a lot of cancellations, so it was unusually quiet. That didn't bother us! We had a back in site- 33. The best site in the campground! It's close to the dog park if you have a dog.

The bathroom/shower is 3 sites down. Very clean.

Also close to the walking trail, basketball/volleyball courts& a neat tree swing. All this is under tall pines. This isn't a large campground, but it's VERY nice. Lots of trees& shady. Has a gift shop at the office.

The pool was open. Lots of hornets& 2 people got stung while in the pool. They have traps out, but the hornets are persistent!

Laundry I didn't use, but it's there if you need it. Everything was very clean. Service was friendly.

So, this is a good base for Lassen Volcanic. Since we couldn't go, there's other things to see. McArthur Burney Falls is a bit of a drive, but well worth it. We also stopped at Subway Cave, which we loved& Hat Creek Rim Overlook(which was a waste of time with the smoke). The rest of the day we chilled at the pool! We will definitely be back someday to see Lassen!

Rocky Point Campground - Lake Almanor

Beautiful, Good fishing, great swimming & boatingwe

We have been going here for years.  The spaces are large, sunny and shaded with lovely trees and all within walking  distance from the lake.  Staff is friendly and helpful and the park is always clean.  Love the fishing, swimming and hiking.  Beautiful views of the mountains and lake any direction.  Family and pet friendly at a reasonable cost.

      Volcanic Country Camping & RV

Close to Lassen NP - time capsule!

This place is cool - the Mineral Lodge and Restaurant is where we checked in for campground. We needed a place to stay before heading into Lassen Volcanic NP. The Mineral Lodge and campground next door are family owned and have a community feel. No frill campground, does have hookups.

$35 per night plus $2 pet fee

Sites very close together. Bathroom old but works. Poor T Mobile service. No wifi.

      Cal-Ida

      Cozy campsite near river

Great campsite, plenty of room to throw the ball for our dog. The never ending sound of the nearby river was peaceful. Less than 50% capacity for Halloween weekend, but certainly a popular spot for hunters, bikers, and off roaders to spot by and use the bathrooms. If you walk across highway 49, you can explore the river; the water was cold, but there were lots of frogs and skipping rocks.

      Yellow Creek Campground

      Hidden gem!

Most people flock to the nearby Lake Almanor or Butt Valley campgrounds, so Yellow Creek Campground is a nice place to go to escape bigger and busier spots. Nestled in the pines and bordering the Humbug valley, this campground has some of the best views in Northern CA.  It's off the beaten path a bit. About an 8 mile trip down a gravel road but very well maintained and easy to get a smaller RV back in there if you like. There's a natural soda spring on the entrance road where the local indigenous Maidu used to gather and drink for healing.  https://www.outdoorproject.com/united-states/california/soda-springs-historic-site

    Guide to Forest Ranch

Forest Ranch sits at approximately 2,400 feet elevation in the foothills of California's Sierra Nevada mountains. Summer temperatures typically range from 85-95°F during day and 55-65°F at night, while winter brings occasional snow at this elevation. Camping options near Forest Ranch span from creek-side sites to lake-adjacent campgrounds within 30-40 minutes driving distance, with most requiring advance planning during peak summer months.

    What to do

Creekside swimming: Cherry Hill Campground features swimming spots along its creek during summer months. As one camper notes, "RV, Camper, Tent, and hammocks within few yards from creek. But get to sleep right next to the creek. And wake up to it with beautiful forests. Bring tube and rope! You will thanks me."

Fishing opportunities: Limesaddle - Lake Oroville State Rec Area provides excellent fishing according to visitors. One reviewer shared: "Golden trout. Beautiful amazing." Another noted they "had a blast it was perfect weather day or night didnt see no wild animals which was good loved all the stars at night."

Wildlife observation: The area surrounding Philbrook Campground offers wildlife viewing opportunities. While the campground's season runs August to September, visitors report it as a "Great little lake. Good fishing. Rough road in." Wildlife commonly spotted includes deer, various bird species, and occasionally black bears.

    What campers like

Quiet, spacious sites: Many visitors appreciate the tranquility of camping near Forest Ranch. At Cherry Hill, campers enjoy "Great camping with large sites. Beautiful creel running along the campground. Great little swimming spots along creek. Hiking up the road about 5 miles. Very peaceful and quiet campground."

Star viewing: The relative distance from major cities creates excellent night sky viewing. At Bidwell Canyon Campground, one visitor mentioned it was "Nice and quite! There wasn't many people at this site. It was very relaxing. And the views are nice. Rangers were friendly as well!"

Clean facilities: Campgrounds in the area generally maintain good sanitation standards. A visitor to Bidwell Canyon noted "Bathrooms were top notch clean!" while another mentioned, "Clean campground, efficient check in. Lake is not walking distance, no internet. Great place for a quick stop over."

    What you should know

Seasonal considerations: Several campgrounds have limited operating seasons or changing conditions throughout the year. Philbrook Campground operates only "August to September" according to its listing, and one camper noted they "had to not camp there because it wasn't open sense the beginning of October."

Water levels fluctuate: Lakes in the region experience significant water level changes. At Woodson Bridge State Recreation Area, a visitor reported "river access has been eroded in this last year so access is down the way at the county park (under the busy roadway, meh). But beautiful oaks, and a fine spot for the night."

Site selection matters: Not all sites are created equal. At Bidwell Canyon, a camper warned "A lot of the sites are very uneven, ours was almost terraced, and the tent area was barely big enough for our 8 person tent. When I took a drive around it looked like many were similarly sloped/terraced not a flat site."

    Tips for camping with families

Seasonal swimming options: Families looking for water activities should consider timing. A visitor to Cherry Hill mentioned "Great little swimming spots along creek" which are typically best from late spring through early fall when water levels and temperatures are appropriate.

Kid-friendly spaces: The Parkway RV Resort & Campground offers amenities that appeal to families. A reviewer mentioned "The sites are spacious and there is a pool to cool down during the hot summers." Another noted it has "the best grassy, clean dog run and a refreshing pool to cool off in after a long day."

Educational opportunities: The Lake Oroville area offers learning experiences for children. A camper at Bidwell Canyon shared "The Lake Oroville Visitor Center has a small museum and exhibits. Staff there were wonderful too."

    Tips from RVers

Hookup availability varies: RV campers should research utilities before arrival. Almond Tree RV Park in Chico offers full hookups and according to a visitor is "very clean and quiet. Perfect for pull-through. The spaces are perfect size and flat (even ground), which is imperative for the type of RV that we have."

Leveling challenges: Many campgrounds in this mountainous region have uneven sites. At Bidwell Canyon, a camper noted "The campsites aren't huge or very level, but the fact that it has full hookups for $45/night, is small, and on the lake made up for that fact."

Overnight stopover options: For those passing through, several easily accessible campgrounds welcome overnight RV stays. The Parkway RV Resort provides "nice pull through sites that are level. Clean bathrooms. It is quiet because far enough away from freeway."
