“The last resort”

Interesting area, very artistic fallout apoliptic feel. This is a free dispersed area off the access dike of Bombay Beach along the Salton sea. This place is a man made disaster ghost town that has been mostly abandon with everything else that went to the wayside of the Salton sea situation. Bombay beach has become an art creating place with lots of installments and really interesting creations of art. Would highly recommend checking it out even if it is just a day trip. There was two RVs on the beach when I was last there. Not sure how safe this place is, has a slab city vibe and not far from slab city. I would definitely stay here over slab city. Not sure how the locals feel about RVs camping out on the beach of Bombay. Definitely check out the art surrounding all the homes of Bombay. Nothing else like it. Feels like freedom in a post apocalyptic society. I like that it has become a place for artists. All the people I talked to there were friendly.

24 hrs in the SLABS

Ok I went here hoping to spend more than 24 hrs and explore and what not but I stuck out like a sore thumb with a military truck and decent travel trailer. Theirs TOOO much need in this community (comparable to skid row if your familiar but in the desert) This is more than just DISPERSED camping where you pull over and kick back. Its literally survival at all times because that’s what THEY are doing in the desert. I could not sleep with all the evening noises and people tweaking/high on something walking around. That all said Salvation Mountain is pretty amazing and safe due to its state protected and at entrance into the Slabs so it’s well traveled. So much LOVE went into it. Do drive around the outskirts of the slabs some too and you’ll find plenty of random desert art that Slabs City is known for.

Ice cream anyone

My first time here we arrived a week before our friend group to secure a good location before the busy thanksgiving weekend and we were the only ones out by the dunes, but the ice cream truck still managed to find us! 😂

There are a lot of regulars who come to the dunes for group camping, and some of them have incredible set-ups, our neighbors rolled in with an 18 wheeler filled with side-by-sides, a flatbed filled with quads, and a hauler filled with bikes, along with 6 big rig RV’s.

This place isn’t actually free you need to buy either a weekly or season pass which runs from November to April ($35 or $150) and the longest you can stay is two weeks without moving your set-up. You can buy a pass at any ATV store or shop, but there is no way to buy one once you’re out here. Rangers and border patrol make the rounds to make sure everyone has a pass, and obeys all ATV rules on the dunes and sand drags.

There is trash at the entrance, slightly inside are toilets. Cell phone service is 5 stars (we work from our RV and had no issues), you can pay to dump and fill up water at the RV park a couple miles from here. The sand is soft, heavy rigs may need to air down.

This is not only a beautiful place, it is also a way of life, and a must do for anyone with a way to get out into the dunes.

One of the best places

I’ve always loved going to Ocotillo because of the views and the people great for kids and big enough to be by yourself.

Perfect

Typical back of the woods campsite. Perfect spot for large gatherings! We stayed out here with a group of 20 people, it was perfect for us.

So much fun

We had a blast here!! We only drove through this spot but we stayed here for a good couple hours playing in the sand!

Fun

Fun little place to 4x4. We went all the way to the top and found an abandoned building. It was super creepy and a lot of fun!

Pretty!

There were a few bugs by the water but the views made up for it. It’s extremely gorgeous right before the sun fully sets!

Boondocking

Great place to go get off grid if you don’t mind off road vehicles. Plenty of open space to get away from the crowds.

Wonder Land

Great place with awesome vibes! No cost. Bring your bikes and have a blast.
