Best Campgrounds near Holly Grove, AR

Camping opportunities around Holly Grove, Arkansas center on several wildlife management areas and state parks offering both primitive sites and developed facilities. The Dagmar Wildlife Management Area provides free dispersed camping with sites marked by blue bands on trees, while Mike Freeze Wattensaw WMA offers secluded camping spots near ponds and waterways. For those seeking more amenities, H&G RV Campground and Mississippi River State Park Campground provide electric hookups, water, and other services for both tent and RV campers within driving distance of Holly Grove.

Access to many sites involves traveling unpaved roads that may become challenging after rain. The Dagmar WMA requires driving approximately 10 miles from the highway on dirt roads, and Wattensaw WMA features gravel roads that can be rough on vehicles. "Go very slowly, and just keep your eyes out for these tiny signs. Once you see one, you'll realize they're all over the place," noted one camper about finding designated camping areas in Wattensaw WMA. Mosquitoes and other insects are frequently mentioned in reviews, particularly near standing water, making insect repellent essential gear for camping in this delta region. Summer humidity increases bug activity, while fall and spring offer more comfortable conditions.

Wildlife observation opportunities represent a significant draw for campers in the Holly Grove area. Several visitors mentioned hearing frogs and seeing evidence of beavers and waterfowl, particularly in the wildlife management areas. Primitive sites generally provide more seclusion and natural experiences but require self-sufficiency as most lack facilities. A camper described Wattensaw WMA as having "a large pond with nearby primitive camping for free, if you need a night's rest and don't want to do the Walmart/travel centers this is your ideal spot with low traffic and a lot of natural beauty." More developed options like Mississippi River State Park provide amenities including showers, flush toilets and picnic tables, though these sites fill more quickly during peak seasons and often require reservations.

    Beagle Club Road Pull-Off

    Quick stop only

Close to the highway so there’s that ambiance. But pretty secluded. I’m sure it’s used more during hunting seasons since it’s marked for such. It was good for an overnight along the way.

    Dagmar Wildlife Management Area Campsites

Easy access and clearly marked sites.

I was pleasantly surprised by what I found in this WMA. Although there are no bathrooms available that I could find the road is easy to access and well-maintained and all of the camping sites are clearly designated with blue stripes on the trees and signs. Although there is road noise and people passing it still feels like a great place to stop and spend a night or several especially for those who like to fish!

Henry Gray Hurricane Lake Wildlife Management Area

    Large lot plus spots

After reading about water on the road in a different review, I was pretty sure I'd be turning around after passing so many flooded fields. I was happy the road was dry all the way in. The roads here are all paved. There is a huge paved lot and at least 8 designated camp spots with concrete pad. Some have concrete tables. There are neighboring buildings and i can't tell if they're maintenance buildings or if people live in them. It was a chilly but comforting stay in late Feb. I would stay here again.

    Village Creek State Park Campground

    Great family vacation campground

One of the largest campgrounds in the state. weekends fill up fast with local families, enjoying the campground with their kids and dogs. Lots of bike riding trails as well as trails for people that bring their horses for the horse camp section. Sites are fairly close together. Camp is well maintained and has a great visitors center with friendly staff.

    Village Creek State Park Campground

    Quiet and Relaxing

This place is very beautiful and DEEP into to woods. The sites are very spread out with privacy though and we loved that!

We arrived after hours and our site had a pamphlet with our name and some basic information for our stay.

In the morning, the spot was very beautiful and tucked away in the woods with visibility to the lake down the hill.

It rained briefly and our spot was down a slight hill so there was a bit of concern with puddling, but there was proper drainage and the site didn’t puddle as much as we would’ve thought! The site was very leveled!

We lost service about 5/10 minutes out from the park with Verizon so if there are things you need to search before do that!

When we left we stopped by the visitor center that had a pretty wide range of things to do with a gift store. The staff and rangers were very nice!

    We would visit again!

Guide to Holly Grove

Camping sites near Holly Grove, Arkansas sit at the edge of the Mississippi Alluvial Plain with seasonal flooding that creates rich wetland habitats for wildlife. Most sites experience high humidity levels during summer months when temperatures can reach 90°F, while winter temperatures drop to around 30°F. The region's floodplain characteristics require campers to prepare for potentially muddy conditions during spring.

What to do

**Fishing: Multiple ponds and lakes attract anglers year-round at Mississippi River State Park Campground where boat rentals are available for exploring Bear Creek Lake. "From the time we arrived to the time we left the staff was great. The kayak tour of Cypress forest was the highlight of the trip. We could see water from every side of our camper," noted one visitor.

**Birdwatching: The region's wetlands support diverse bird species, particularly at Village Creek State Park where the unique Crowley's Ridge geology creates habitat diversity. "The Crowley's Ridge region of the state is home to unique geological formations, soil and plant life unlike anywhere else in Arkansas. The Big Ben Nature Trail offers a great opportunity to identify these unusual plant species," according to a camper.

**Boat tours: H&G RV Campground provides convenient access to regional water features. A visitor noted, "Traveling across country on I-40, found this camp ground on the DYRT app. Close to Interstate, Love's station at exit." The camp serves as a strategic base for exploring nearby waterways.

What campers like

**Privacy between sites: Dispersed camping areas provide significant separation between campers. "Simple and spread out. There are some big spots. Most have a fire ring," mentioned one visitor to Dagmar Wildlife Management Area Campsites.

**Natural surroundings: Many campers appreciate the opportunity to stay in minimally developed areas. "It's raw no services but so nice," commented one Dagmar WMA visitor, while another mentioned, "Got in after dark and area was easily navigatable. Multiple large open camping areas."

**Budget-friendly options: Free camping sites represent a significant draw. A camper at Mike Freeze Wattensaw WMA described finding "a large pond with nearby primitive camping for free...very nice spot found it quickly at night. Soft ground. Quick to get to off highway."

What you should know

**Site identification systems: WMAs use specific marking systems for designated camping areas. At Dagmar WMA, "Sites a marked by blue bands on trees or signs. Lots of spots spaced far apart," while at Wattensaw WMA, "there are a ton of campsites down the gravel road and they are well marked. There are signs for designated camping and the trees have a blue ring painted around them."

**Navigation challenges: GPS services often fail to provide accurate directions to remote campsites. "Apple Maps and Google maps showed me two completely different places over half an hour away from each other with the same coordinates," warned a Wattensaw WMA visitor.

**Facilities limitations: Most wildlife management areas have no services. A camper at Riverfront RV Park mentioned, "The camp itself is pretty basic with gravel pull ins and few amenities. It is a city operated site (that is who you pay)."
