Within the Bureau of Land Management's Lower Sonoran Field Office, Painted Rock Petroglyph Site And Campground sits 26 miles west of Gila Bend on paved roads that transition to gravel inside the park. This established campground operates as a dry camping destination with no water, electrical hookups, or dump station available on-site.
The campground spreads across a large area with 60 sites, most available first-come-first-served though about one-third can be reserved online. Sites feature gravel pads, concrete picnic tables, and fire rings, with many accommodating big rigs easily. Greg L. notes "sites are very cheap only $8 / $4 senior rate" and emphasizes the campground's expansive layout. The spacing between sites provides privacy, though vault toilets are limited to just two at the entrance plus one at the far end.
Ancient petroglyphs carved into volcanic rock formations sit within walking distance of the camping area, accessible via a short interpretive trail. The desert location offers minimal shade, making awnings or other sun protection essential during warmer months. Cell service varies by carrier, with Verizon and AT&T working well while T-Mobile reception proves spotty.
Access requires driving curvy paved roads from the interstate, then navigating gravel surfaces within the campground itself. Larry B. describes "easy paved access all the way to the campground" with sites that are "very large and spaced apart." A camp host stays on-site and can receive packages for extended-stay campers. Bring all water and supplies from places to camp around Gila Bend, as no services exist nearby.
Description
The Painted Rock Petroglyph Site and Campground are located approximately 90 miles southwest of Phoenix, Arizona. The petroglyph site provides visitors the opportunity to view an ancient archaeological site containing hundreds of symbolic and artistic rock etchings, or "petroglyphs," produced centuries ago by prehistoric peoples. There are also inscriptions made by people who passed through during historic times. There is a $2 per vehicle fee for the site. Cash or check payment is accepted. Overnight camping is allowed at the adjacent Painted Rock Petroglyph Campground. This is a separate facility from the petroglyph site. Camping reservations must be made through the recreation.gov website. We no longer accept cash or check payments for campsites. The campground has picnic tables, grills, steel fire rings, and a vault toilet. No potable water is available at the facility. Several historic trails lie within the campground. The Juan Bautista de Anza National Historic Trail, The Butterfield Overland Stage Route and the Mormon Battalion Trail are three trails that played prominent roles in the history of Arizona and the American West. Visitors can learn about the site and historic trails through professional interpretive panels located on the site.
