Best Dog-Friendly Camping near Wetumpka, AL

Camp Sherrye on the Coosa provides riverside camping with full pet accommodation, featuring well-maintained sites where pets can enjoy the outdoors alongside their owners. The campground offers both pull-through and premium sites with water and electric hookups, and includes a large dog run connected to the playground area. Campers note the clean facilities and nicely sized sites make for comfortable stays with pets. The Backyard RV Resort (formerly The Woods RV Park and Campground) maintains a fenced dog park for off-leash play time, with plenty of green space throughout the property for walking dogs on leash. Jackson Lake Towne of Spectre, Capital City RV Park, and Gunter Hill also welcome pets with designated areas for exercise.

Nearby hiking trails and water access provide additional opportunities for pet owners to exercise their dogs while camping. The Coosa River offers water activities, though pet owners should be aware that the kayak launch area can be rocky and potentially hazardous for dogs. Baby goats at Jackson Lake Towne of Spectre provide a unique animal interaction experience that many pets find intriguing. Campsites generally enforce standard leash policies when pets are outside the designated off-leash areas. While most campgrounds in the Wetumpka area focus primarily on RV accommodation, many offer spacious sites that provide ample room for pets to relax with their owners. The Backyard RV Resort

    Home away from home

We are baaaack! We came back on Friday, the 26th and decided to stay a week. Shannon and his wife, Stacey have the gift of hospitality. We feel safe here with the hidden location and security cameras. Our dogs enjoyed the dog park and walks through the woods and around the lake. I enjoyed the watching the cows and dog herding the goats through the clearing. There is also a playground for kids.

    Peach Queen Campground

    Great campground with friendly staff

The staff here is wonderful. They've helped us adjust to full time RV Life over that past 4 months. The residents here are very friendly as well.

They have a dog park at the front and a large field in the back door our dog to run and play. The pavilion is also great for getting out, even in rainy weather.

The pool is amazing. Plenty of chairs and umbrellas to rest and our kids love the slide.

    Great little campground off I-65

Ultra clean Good Sam campground located just off I-65. Staff was wonderful and engaging. Expect a former Marine to escort you to your site, rain or shine. It was pouring buckets when we arrived and he insisted on taking us literally across the street from the camp store to ensure we had everything we needed.

All lots appeared to be pull thru and level. Due to rain, we kept our Airstream connected to the truck and just connected water and electricity. Leveling was minimal (fore/aft) with no need for blocks or boards.

Recommend staying in sites closer to camp store, as they are farthest from interstate. We barely heard it from site 2.

Laundry room was clean and available to wash/dry lots of towels due to rain and wet dog. Water pressure in campground is 80 psi.

Large fenced dog park at north end and plenty of green space for walking your puppy. Just be aware there are rabbits all over the place.

Propane is available on site and the camp store has a little bit of everything. And there’s a Love’s truck stop at the exit as well.

Great spot for an overnight stay on your trip. You won’t find a nicer staff or a cleaner campground!a

    Maxwell-Gunter AFB FamCamp

RV Friendly, not so much for tents

This is an okay campground but really caters to RVs. There's a whole lot of concrete, perfect for recreational vehicles but not so much for tent or hammock campers. It's more of an RV resort of sorts.

Tent sites are cheap at $5/night but you're limited to only 7 nights. Which probably won't matter to a tent camper here, as I would think being here for that long would be a bit much.

There are a ton of amenities here, including an old softball field turned into a dog park of sorts. There is a nice little lake but that's about it in terms of 'natural' amenities. Okay spot if you just need a place to stay the night but I wouldn't prolong a visit here. Also sort of loud given its close proximity to the train tracks.

    Lovely

Great campground for military, large level sites. Long term sites have covered patios. Full hookup, no wi fi. Laundry rooms, 1.00 to wash and dry, with efficient cycles. Lake with playground and large dog park. Exceptionally friendly staff. Quiet and we'll maintained. Shower rooms available, although have not used. You do hear planes going over but not too loud as some AFB's we've stayed at. Relvery plays at 6:30 am, Star Spangled Banner at 5:00pm, and TAPS at 9pm, not offensively loud, kinda like it. Would highly recommend and will be staying awhile great monthly rates. Great Verizon signal.

    The Backyard RV Resort

    Pretty Setting!

Honestly, wasn't sure when we first turned in the driveway.  However, very happy with the park!  We were lucky enough to score a site on the water.  Spots are level and decent sized.  Booking was a breeze, staff was very friendly.  We didn't use the bathrooms or laundry room but they look very clean and recently updated.  Also has a very nice fenced in dog park for off leash play time.

Our AT&T had 5 bars and streamed videos with no problem.  Verizon had 4 bars as well.

    Kountry Air RV Park

    Great Experience

This review is based on a short-term versus destination campground (CG). When we made reservations, we were told to only take exit 179 off I-65 and follow the GPS directions, as any other way will take you on narrow roads, including gravel roads. We drove the 14 miles from the exit to the CG with no issues. We were greeted by Don on his golf cart, and his wife, Gigi, checked us in at the office. We received a great rundown of the local area, including restaurant suggestions that looked really good. Unfortunately, we were only overnighting here and did not have the chance to enjoy Prattville. We were led to pull through site A with FHUs. Getting to our site was a little narrow but very doable. The site was level and pleasantly spacious both at and between sites. The utilities are in the middle of the pad. We were able to position so we could get to both black tanks with a 10’ sewer hose. We got 2 bars on Verizon, and their WiFi was better than most CGs this size. Both Don and his wife came by at separate times to ensure we were settled in, to include asking if we needed propane. The CG is mainly full-timers that include a small community of retired military. They have dedicated sites for short-term stays. There were transient workers as we heard the familiar Cummings diesel start-ups in the wee hours of the morning. There is some road noise, but not bad. They have a nice dog park. As we travel through the area, we will place this CG on our return list.

    Deer Run RV Park

Good Overnighter or Short Stay Option

This review is based on a short-term stay versus a destination campground(CG). We traveled into the CG on the US highways following our RV GPS from FL with no issues getting to this CG. Check-in was very easy, and we were guided to our online reservation first choice, end site 19. Our check-in person was concerned we might not like pulling through site 19. He was correct, as this site was too short and had an incline at the unhitch point. We proceeded to the newer area, where we were given the choice of pull-through sites 97& 98, which were both FHUs and flat. We chose 98, which was fairly level and plenty long enough for our 5th wheel and F450. The sites in this CG are close to each other. There were no trees so that we could have put out our satellite, but there was no need due to the great cable selection. We got 3 bars on Verizon and used our MifI for what little internet we needed. We tried but could not connect to the CG's WiFi. They have very good water pressure, so we used a reducer. Where we were in the back of the CG, we could still hear the highway. There was no formal dog park, but plenty of areas to walk your dog. This is an older park with many permanent and seasonal residents. We were impressed that, for the most part, there was not that“trailer trash” look, and the residents were friendly. There are newer water and electric sites in the 100s area in front of where we were. There’s a shower house and laundry, but we did not use these facilities. This CG is a good short-stay option.

    Peach Queen Campground

    Peach Queen campground

When we arrived the grass was very tall. They did mow today. Just not my site as we were occupying it. It has full hook ups. Not very much shade. My site has none. The bathrooms are dirty. The pool is a nice size. It could use a vacuum. There is a decent size jungle gym at the playground. My 8 year old son has been having a great time playing with other kids there. There is a nice sized fenced in dog park. There is a swing to sit on. However, it’s all busted up and not usable. There is a nice sized pond. I haven’t been to it yet. There is supposed to be wifi. I don’t see the network when searching for it. We have our own hotspot. It runs on the t mobile network. Except, we don’t have a signal here. I haven’t met anyone who runs this place. Honestly if my son wasn’t having as much fun playing on the playground we would’ve left after the first night. We booked 3 nights as to break up our drive. I definitely wouldn’t stay here again.

Guide to Wetumpka

Wetumpka camping areas sit along the Coosa River in central Alabama, approximately 20 miles northeast of Montgomery at an elevation around 200 feet. The region experiences humid subtropical climate with hot summers (90°F+ July-August) and mild winters (40-60°F December-February), creating year-round camping opportunities with distinct seasonal considerations at local sites.

What to do

Fishing opportunities: The Coosa River provides excellent fishing spots around Gunter Hill. "Fishing, hiking and lots to do in nature," notes camper Deanna N. Sites near the water offer direct access for anglers seeking bass, catfish and other freshwater species.

Safari experience: Located near Montgomery South RV Park is Alabama Safari Park. "This park is right up the street from Alabama Safari Park, and there are a few restaurants up the road near the interstate," explains Stephanie G. The drive-through wildlife park creates a unique day trip opportunity for campers looking for family activities between outdoor adventures.

Lake activities: Wind Creek State Park Campground provides extensive water recreation on Lake Martin. "Large lake for swimming, boating, fishing. Sites are very open to each other but a lot of shade," reports Rachel G. The park maintains boat rentals including "motorized jon boats and pontoon boats" that can be rented for "4-48 hours," with non-motorized options also available.

What campers like

Level sites: Many campgrounds in the area feature well-designed sites. At Capital City RV Park, "The sites are gravel and are mostly level, I believe the most I had to adjust was 1.5″," shares Adam P. This practical feature makes setup easier for campers with various equipment types.

Security features: Several parks maintain security measures that campers appreciate. Montgomery South RV Park has staff who "patrolled the grounds on golf carts frequently," according to Stephanie G. The attention to safety creates comfortable environments for overnight or extended stays.

Winter camping options: The area provides year-round camping opportunities with varying experiences by season. "We were the only trailer in loop D. It was quiet and very enjoyable! Being right on the lake and having the ducks swim up really thrilled our dogs," reports Erin L. about winter camping at Wind Creek State Park Campground.

What you should know

Weather considerations: The region's climate can impact camping experiences. At Camp Sherrye on the Coosa, one camper noted challenges with river access: "They boast a kayak launch, but I'm assuming the river may have washed it out a bit... We wouldn't use it due to the rocky drop off at the end." Water levels and conditions can vary seasonally.

Reservation timing: Popular campgrounds fill quickly during peak seasons. At Gunter Hill, a camper reported, "Booked sites with friends months ago for a one night stay on the way to Columbus, MS. As such, we were able to book FHU sites along the water." Advanced planning is essential for waterfront or premium sites.

Highway noise levels: Some campgrounds are positioned near interstates. A visitor to Montgomery South RV Park observed, "As this is right off the interstate you get the convenience of a truck stop for gas etc right there. But you also get a little interstate noise... But there is also a train that runs nearby that I heard a few times." Consider site location when booking if noise sensitivity is a concern.

Tips for camping with families

Playground access: Several dog friendly campgrounds near Wetumpka include child-focused amenities. Gunter Hill offers "a sizable modern playground right next to the bathhouse," as noted by Richard A. Families with both children and pets can enjoy these adjacent recreational areas.

Educational opportunities: Jackson Lake Towne of Spectre provides unique animal interactions. "The baby goats were a fun little surprise!" shares Jena S. These encounters create learning experiences for children while camping.

Activity options: Wind Creek State Park Campground maintains multiple recreation choices. "They have a zip line and tree line adventure course, mini-golf, a beach area for swimming, and plenty of fishing spots," reports Romeo M. These diverse activities help keep families engaged throughout longer stays.

Tips from RVers

Hookup placement: At Gunter Hill, one RVer observed, "It has full hookups, however the sewer was a bit far from the paring pad. If you have a single black tank hose this may be an issue." Bringing extension hoses can address this common challenge at various pet-friendly campgrounds around Wetumpka.

Dog amenities: The Backyard RV Resort (formerly The Woods RV Park) features "a very nice fenced in dog park for off leash play time," according to Stephanie. Many RVers appreciate these designated pet areas when traveling with dogs.

Site selection: For optimal experiences when RV camping with pets, consider site location. "Spots are close together but I've seen worse," noted a Wind Creek visitor, while another camper recommended, "Recommend staying in sites closer to camp store, as they are farthest from interstate" at Montgomery South RV Park to minimize traffic noise.
