What to do
Hiking trails: Chewacla State Park features several miles of trails accessible for various skill levels. The waterfall trail is particularly popular among visitors. "Nice hiking trails, mountain biking trails, a lake, a waterfall, and cabins. What more could you ask for all in one spot? Campground is a bit cramped, but the showers and bathrooms are clean, and the trails are well maintained," notes Rich S.
Fishing opportunities: Gunter Hill provides excellent bank fishing access with spacious waterfront sites. "Large sites, shaded, have sewer hookups, concrete pads, many on a beautiful lake, bathrooms are a little dated, but clean and showers aircondtioned," according to druann B.
Mountain biking: Advanced riders will find challenging terrain at Chewacla State Park. "Many areas have killed mtb trails to ride, worth a sniff," mentions Arthur G. The park contains trails of varying difficulties suitable for beginners to expert riders.
What campers like
Spacious sites: Gunter Hill consistently receives praise for its well-designed camping areas. "We had a nice stay in site 67. The campground was renovated sometime in the not too distant past with large concrete pads, as well as water and electrical hook ups. Many sites have full hook ups, all at a reasonable price," reports Ian D.
Private beach areas: Lake Martin access points provide swimmers and boaters with secluded spots. "We were the only trailer in loop D. It was quiet and very enjoyable! Being right on the lake and having the ducks swim up really thrilled our dogs," shares Erin L. at Wind Creek State Park Campground.
Clean facilities: Campgrounds maintain well-kept bathhouses and common areas. "Nice campground with a boat launch on lake Martin. Good swimming, adequate shade," notes Anna R. about Wind Creek State Park Campground.
What you should know
Reservation requirements: Most sites require advance booking, especially during peak seasons. "Booked sites with friends months ago for a one night stay on the way to Columbus, MS. As such, we were able to book FHU sites along the water," explains Rick G.
Park size considerations: Some parks feature extensive campground networks. Montgomery South RV Park offers "Ultra clean Good Sam campground located just off I-65. Staff was wonderful and engaging. Expect a former Marine to escort you to your site, rain or shine," according to Eleanor the Airstream R.
Seasonal factors: Winter camping provides a different experience with fewer crowds. "In New England it's challenging to find a campground that is open in late November/early December but that's certainly not the case in the south! When we pulled into Gunter Hill this time of year we were surprised to see how empty the place was," reports Sarah C.
Tips for camping with families
Playground access: Multiple parks offer dedicated play areas for children. "We love camping at Wind Creek. lots to do for the kiddos!" mentions Jessi B. about Wind Creek State Park Campground.
Swimming options: Lake Martin provides designated swimming areas with various amenities. "Tent camping with family during Hurricane evacuation. Beautiful park, numerous bath houses, laundry, camp store, playgrounds, mini golf, and so much more," shares Kim T.
Safari adventures: Plan a visit to nearby attractions for family entertainment. "This park is right up the street from Alabama Safari Park, and there are a few restaurants up the road near the interstate," notes Stephanie G. about Montgomery South RV Park.
Tips from RVers
Site selection: Choose locations that match your equipment requirements. "The sites are nicely spaced out so even if there had been a lot of people there, it wouldn't have felt too crowded. Large old trees with beautiful Spanish moss provide plenty of shade in the sites," observes Sarah C.
Level sites: Kountry Air RV Park provides carefully prepared camping spots. "The campground is immaculate and very well maintained with each site carefully leveled with gravel to make set up easy! The sites are well placed and spread out so you don't feel like you're right on top of the campers next to you," reports Steve D.
Hookup positioning: Consider placement when setting up. "All sites except # 1 and # 2 have water, electric, sewer and TV connections," explains Tony C. about Chewacla State Park Campground.
