This peaceful campground features level gravel sites and well-maintained grounds where campers can walk their dogs throughout the property. Both locations provide picnic tables and fire rings at pet-friendly sites. Monte Sano State Park Campground, located about 30 minutes from Hartselle, offers tent, RV, and cabin accommodations that accept pets, with hiking trails accessible directly from the campground. The bathhouses at most area campgrounds remain open 24 hours, allowing for late-night pet walks when necessary.

Walking trails at several area campgrounds provide excellent exercise opportunities for dogs, with Point Mallard offering a six-mile paved path particularly popular among pet owners. Cullman Campground, located about 20 minutes south of Hartselle, features a country setting with horses and waterfowl that provide entertainment for both pets and owners, though dogs must remain leashed when near the wildlife areas. Jay Landings Marina & RV Park allows pets in its waterfront camping area with access to the Tennessee River, though the nearby industrial facilities and occasional train noise may disturb sensitive pets. Area campgrounds generally require proof of current vaccinations, and most implement quiet hours to minimize barking disturbances. The Decatur/Wheeler Lake KOA Holiday, though slightly farther from Hartselle, provides dedicated spots for travelers with pets and maintains a pet-friendly atmosphere with multiple designated dog walking areas.

      Point Mallard City Campground

Only a small area is for short term , no wifi

No wifi per office with no known date of repair. Relatively quiet, lots of vehicle traffic and golf carts. Office staff is very helpful and friendly. Majority of park is longterm. Dog friendly, no dog park at location. Close to shopping but far enough away for quiet.

Great campground to hike Bankhead National Forest

This is a great little campground tucked away on the edge of Bankhead National Forest. The location of the campground makes it an excellent location to enjoy the numerous waterfall hikes in the area. The campground was laid out well with spacious gravel sites and full hookups. Sites 2-4 had good views of the pond/field, sites 10-15 backed up to the tree line to provide a little shade all other sites had full sun. The camp host was super friendly and helpful. They have a general store, laundry, bathhouse, and small dog park. The campground has hiking trails on the property if you don’t have time to visit Bankhead NF. If you’re in the area or wanting to spend time in Bankhead NF I’d recommend checking this campground out.

Redstone Arsenal RV Park & Campground

      Parking lot

This is your typical military PCS campground for people in transit. No shade! Cement pads to park on. A laundry room, pavilion and showerhouse. There is a dog park and you are off the beaten path. Which makes it a little difficult to find the first time. But when you do your like “Duh! It was right here.” So useful for an overnight if you have a military/retired ID.

      Quail Creek RV Resort

      Well Run Campground

We received an email with arrival information, which stated to pick up our site and park information at the shower and laundry facility as you entered the RV Park portion of the golf resort. The information provided a campground(CG) map and our site number. We proceeded to pull through site 25 with FHUs. The site was plenty long enough to situate and disconnect for our two-night stay. Some pull-through reviews stated spacious, and I guess if you rate pad length, that could be accurate, but the sites are close together. The water pressure was excellent, and we really liked the new cedar picnic table. We noticed WiFi transponders throughout the CG. This CG has the most WiFi transponders we’ve ever seen, counting five per row of 20 campsites. The CG WiFi was pretty good, but we put up our Starlink with no problem getting a northern shot. There would not have been a problem with a southern sky shot as well. Soon after we set up, the very nice CG host/manager came by to ensure we didn’t have any issues or questions, which we did not. We got 3 bars on Verizon. The CG is fairly large, with full-time or seasonal leases. They do not have a dog park, but there are plenty of areas to walk your dog. They have dedicated spots for short-term campers. The motel and golf course facilities are adjacent and are located further back on the property. It was nice that there was a separate road to the resort area as the locals drive rapidly to and from the golf course. We played a round of golf and were surprised that the course is not very well maintained, but it does get a lot of play. The CG and the golf course are actually separate entities even though they are co-located. Drove the 15 minutes into Hartselle and were pleasantly surprised by amenities such as the Walmart and especially a very nice, well-stocked Krogers. We enjoyed our stay at this very nice CG.

Tip: Go left at the stop sign on Mt. Zion Rd from Nat Key Rd when departing the CG! When we departed, heading back towards the interstate, you come to a stop sign. Our RV GPS and Waze wanted us to turn right on Mt. Zion Rd instead of going left as we did when we arrived. We took the right turn, and about the time the trailer swung, we saw the drop-off into the ditch, and the driver’s side wheels went into it, knocking off a snap pad. We stopped at the old country store parking lot at the next turn and checked for damage. Thank goodness we only lost a snap pad.

      Lake Guntersville State Park Campground

Beautiful State Park, something for everyone!

Visited Lake Guntersville State Park, for the day. After taking our granddaughter to Screaming Eagle Zip-line Adventures, located at the gorgeous Lodge, we visited the Campground…and it’s amazing! At the office, we were helped by Rocky, who was friendly and knowledgeable! We received CG info and a map, as well as rates. We are already planning our next trip to visit! The general store was stocked with necessities, as well as souvenirs. Of course we had to get some ice cream! There are several types of sites, monthly, cabins and tent camping. There are boat slips (local rentals) and a Pavilion on the water, basketball and tennis courts, playground, shady dog park, splash pad, and clean bathhouses. Firewood and ice can be purchased at the store. There are also many trails to hike and bike . It is easy to see that this SP is well maintained! The SP Lodge is worth visiting, which has a nice restaurant. LGSP has a golf course, and the quaint town is close by and has shopping and several restaurants.

      Thousand Trails Hidden Cove

      Very nice, quiet campground

Great campground & people! Only reason for 4 instead of 5 stars is the lack of things to do. No fenced in dog park but plenty of space to have one. Right on the lake but unaware of any kind of rentals available nearby— closest rentals are 40 mins away on the opposite side of the lake. Nearest Walmart is Cullman which is 45 mins away. Wouldn’t recommend staying here if you prefer to be closer to the city but perfect if you want to be in the middle of the woods and have no reason to leave. Very hot, humid and rainy time of year! Would be back in the fall perhaps.

Redstone Arsenal RV Park & Campground

      Nice Military FAMCAMP

The campground(CG) was easy to find for our mid-October stay. We exited off on 14A to gate 9 where we went through the gate and then did a u-turn to take us back down past the golf course to the CG. We had no problem doing the u-turn with our 40' fifth wheel. We followed the signage to the CG and then into pull-through site 21 with FHUs. There was no formal check-in, but our name and stay dates were on the site post. The pads here are huge and the utilities including 50 AMP worked well. We got 3 bars on Verizon and 2 bars on T-Mobile along with a large selection of OTA channels. We could have used satellite as there are no trees near the RV sites. They have a nice fenced dog park plus a shower and laundry facility with 4 machines each costing$1. The WiFi worked well for a CG this size. Use Gate 8 near the commissary and BX versus 9. Gate 8 gives you an easier drive to the campground. Overall we enjoyed our overnight stay.

    Guide to Hartselle

Camping areas near Hartselle, Alabama range from lakeside retreats to forest-based locations, typically at elevations between 600-1,100 feet. The climate features hot, humid summers with temperatures often exceeding 90°F and mild winters where overnight freezing is common from November through March. Most campgrounds in this region remain open year-round with seasonal amenities limited during winter months.

    What to do

Fishing access points: At Decatur / Wheeler Lake KOA Holiday, campers can fish directly from the shoreline. "We fished feet from our camper off of the bank. They have a tie-down for animals, fire pit (with grill), all the hook ups for the rv/campers, and even gave us free food upon arrival," notes Mallory H.

Hiking trails: Monte Sano State Park offers challenging terrain for outdoor enthusiasts. "The hiking is moderate to extreme up and down some interesting rock formations. The mountain bikers and bikers seem to enjoy themselves too, flying down the closed roadway or the steep roadways and challenging themselves on the rocky terrain," according to Shelly S.

Water activities: Smith Lake Park provides swimming and boating opportunities on the clear waters of Lewis Smith Lake. "The lake is always nice," notes Jennifer A., while another visitor mentions, "There is a beach area and a boat launch. They have pavilions with grills and electrical outlets."

    What campers like

Natural features: Corinth Recreation Area offers remarkable sunset views over the water. "This place has an amazing trail, spots of gorgeous sunset or sunrise gazing, and shade," explains Genie C., adding that "The camp was full but you would have thought the opposite based on how quite is was."

Family-friendly environments: Point Mallard City Campground provides numerous recreational options for families. "The fact that this campground stays packed should be an indication of what a great place it is! Very friendly staff, clean bath houses and next to a fun water park. Located in Decatur, AL, you are close to grocery stores, gas stations, restaurants and more!" shares Lenice G.

Quiet settings: At Quail Creek RV Resort in Hartselle, campers appreciate the peaceful atmosphere. "It's very nice and peaceful. Great bath house. With laundry. Has an inn and golf course on property. Close to 65," remarks Tina B., highlighting amenities that aren't found at every campground.

    What you should know

Site spacing variations: Campground layouts differ significantly across the region. At Point Mallard City Campground, "The spaces were a little bit tight & close but they were angled nicely. We had to maneuver the trailer around the trees but not complaining about the shade," reports Timothy T.

Off-season limitations: During winter months, some amenities close. "Beach & Bath houses were closed due to COVID-19," noted a Corinth Recreation Area visitor, though this reflects seasonal closures that often occur regardless of other circumstances.

Noise considerations: Some locations experience noise from nearby transportation. Jay Landings Marina & RV Park visitor Bobbie S. comments, "There is a scrap metal recycling plant beside the campground, a train not too far away (whistle blows at night) and across the river is a nuclear power plant and a refinery."

    Tips for camping with families

Water park access: Choose sites within walking distance of water features during summer. "Nice clean campground. Walking distance to water park. Sites are very nice, although a little close to each other," Timothy R. says about Point Mallard City Campground, making it ideal for families wanting water recreation.

Multiple playgrounds: Smith Lake Park offers several play areas throughout the property. "Park has cabins on site, places for rvs, and also areas for tents. There is a beach area and a boat launch. They have pavilions with grills and electrical outlets," states Vanessa S.

Kid-friendly trails: Corinth Recreation Area features well-maintained paths suitable for various ages. "We spent a lot of time walking with our kids on the trails and riding scooters around the campsite roads. Nature trails were extremely well kept with great views on the water," shares Thomas H.

    Tips from RVers

Pull-through accessibility: Cullman Campground offers easy access for larger vehicles. "Quiet country setting, clean park, friendly staff. Gravel level full hook up 30 and 50 ampsites. Pond with ducks, bossy goose and horses," explains K A.

Site leveling: Look for campgrounds with level sites to minimize setup time. "Site was very clean and well spaced from other campers. Site was level and required no adjustments to level the RV," mentions Steve D. about his experience at Jay Landings Marina & RV Park.

Cell coverage variations: Working remotely requires research on connectivity. At Corinth Recreation Area, "Full hookups and AT & T cellphone coverage good enough for working from Trailer. Verizon cellphone coverage didn't work here," reports Thomas H., an important consideration for those needing to stay connected.
