Cabins near Eufaula, Alabama sit along the banks of Lake Eufaula, a 45,000-acre reservoir created by the Walter F. George Dam on the Chattahoochee River. The region experiences hot, humid summers with temperatures often exceeding 90°F and mild winters with occasional freezing temperatures. Most cabin rental facilities cluster along the eastern shoreline, providing access to fishing and water recreation opportunities within the 640 miles of shoreline that borders both Alabama and Georgia.
What to do
Waterfall exploration: Providence Canyon State Park, nicknamed "Georgia's Little Grand Canyon," is located just 6 miles from Florence Marina State Park Campground. "Close to this park is Providence canyon which looks like a small Bryce canyon except it was created by poor farming. It's a neat place to see about 6 miles from the park. There's an old church there and some real old graves," notes camper B M.
Fishing opportunities: Walter F. George Lake (Lake Eufaula) offers excellent fishing opportunities for bass, crappie, and catfish. "You can have a AL. or GA fishing license here the lake runs through both states," explains a Florence Marina visitor. "Lots of blooming Lilly's, big oaks with moss, shorebirds and gators" make this a picturesque fishing destination.
Historical sites: The Kolomoki Mounds State Park Campground features significant Native American archaeological sites. "They have a museum and the building is built into the side of a partially excavated mound which was really cool. They also have a replica of a hut/dwelling like the ones that the previous Native Americans would have inhabited," shares Ashley W.
What campers like
Water activities: Despite the summer heat, the natural springs at Blue Springs State Park Campground provide cold-water swimming options. One camper notes, "The springs are very pretty and great for a natural spring. We did not swim but were very impressed with the cleanliness of the water." Another adds, "The main attraction in this state park is the spring fed pool."
Family-friendly amenities: Lakepoint Resort State Park Campground receives praise for its family accommodations. "The campsites are spacious and thoughtfully laid out, providing just the right amount of privacy while still feeling connected to the natural surroundings," writes Kyle I. The campground offers "multiple little walking trails and great views of the lake. Boat launch and convenient store near the entrance of the park."
Military facilities: Fort Benning's military recreation area offers outstanding amenities. "This place has it all. It is surrounded by trees. The spaces are far apart. Walking and running trails abound," notes RichMichelle M. Another visitor describes the facilities as "clean on the outside and inside" with "plenty of space between each area, a little store, lots of deer; plus the clean pool was open."
What you should know
Heat management: Summer temperatures regularly exceed 90°F with high humidity. One visitor to Chewacla State Park Campground warns, "It's in a nice park with water features, they have a swimming area, small creek, and falls. Many areas have killed mtb trails to ride... I do not recommend going in July. It was HOT! No swimming, alligators."
Wildlife awareness: Alligators inhabit the waterways throughout the region. Signs are posted at many campgrounds, and visitors should maintain a safe distance. A camper at Florence Marina State Park mentions, "The hosts are so sweet though and even showed us where the alligators are. Didn't see any but it was cold."
Connectivity challenges: Cell service can be limited. "Cell service can be challenging, T-mobile was only Edge service (remember that?) was able to stream video for my kids on AT&T and Verizon. My site was totally wooded and that could have contributed to the difficulty in cell service," reports Keith and Tia S. at Florence Marina State Park. Another camper notes, "Cell service was extremely spotty so don't expect to get much in the way of cell or internet service here."
Tips for camping with families
Playground access: Lake Eufaula Campground offers family-friendly activities. "I took my boys here for the holiday weekend. The pool was large and clean, the bathrooms were recently updated, and they had fun things for the kids. They loved craft time in the afternoon, the scavenger hunt and mini golf course," shares Beth S.
Swimming options: Most cabin facilities provide swimming opportunities, though some have restrictions. Kolomoki Mounds State Park offers "a small swimming beach which was nice with a trail through the woods to walk or ride bikes to it from the campground. There was a playground area here and in the actual campground area too," according to Ashley W.
Recreation facilities: Several parks offer miniature golf, bike trails, and organized activities for children. At Florence Marina, "the campground has a miniature golf course on site for a fun time with the kids," writes Shelly F.
Tips from RVers
Site selection: For RV campers, specific site recommendations can enhance the stay. At Chewacla State Park, one camper advises, "Many of the sites back up into the woods for shade and a hint of privacy with plenty of space to setup outside. We are staying in the second loop and really like our site. The sites near us (28-33) all look great for space."
Seasonal planning: Avoid peak summer months if possible, as heat and crowds can be challenging. Fall offers better conditions, though football season at nearby Auburn University means Chewacla State Park cabins fill quickly. "We would go watch sunset at the lake funny our phones read AL. time not GA time," notes a visitor to Florence Marina, highlighting the unique time zone border that runs through the area.
Utility connections: Most cabin and RV sites offer full hookups, but quality varies. At Lakepoint Resort State Park, "Campsite mostly level and drain well when raining. The outer loop sites are pull through but short. Staff said to call them if we did not fit into site," reports Clay M., adding that they had "good verizon reception for calls but not so much for data. Some local TV stations also received."
