Farewell Bend State Recreation Area sits along the Snake River in eastern Oregon, where the high desert terrain gives way to the water's edge just off I-84 near campsites near Huntington. Managed by Oregon Parks and Recreation Department, the campground is organized into three large loops, each with a distinct character. The A loop sits closest to the road, while the B loop has trees and shrubs between sites that provide more separation. The C loop faces Brownlee Reservoir and draws campers who want water views, though it can be exposed to wind.
The open terrain here is no exaggeration. Shade is limited across most of the campground, and summer temperatures in this part of Oregon can be intense. Raphaela H. notes the campground "has shade trees, which is special for the area," suggesting that even modest tree cover stands out in this landscape. The Snake River runs alongside the park, and while the day-use area provides access to a rocky beach, direct river access from the campsites themselves is limited. Boating, waterskiing, and fishing for catfish, crappie, and smallmouth bass draw anglers and water-sport enthusiasts throughout the warmer months.
Full hookups are available, with electric, water, and sewer connections accommodating RVs up to 56 feet. Sites include fire pits and picnic tables. Showers are on-site and reviewers generally describe the bathrooms as clean, though water temperature in the showers can be inconsistent. Cell service is weak to nonexistent throughout the park, so downloading maps or making reservations before arrival is worth the effort.
Weekends fill up fast. Kelly H. describes it as "peaceful campground on the Snake River and quiet in late September, mid-week," which reflects a pattern across reviews: weekday visits in shoulder season tend to offer more availability and less activity. Some riverfront sites near the cabins in C loop have carried reserved-only designations, and a 2024 fire affected part of the park boundary, so checking current conditions before booking is advisable. Nearby, Burnt River/Snake river confluence and Spring Recreation Site provide overflow options if the campground is at capacity. Book mid-week stays in advance during summer; walk-up availability improves considerably in September and October.
