Park and Pack Campsite 10 — Mohican-Memorial State Forest

SUMMARY PRESENTED BYT-Mobile

Free and walk-in only, Site 10 is one of ten Park and Pack campsites managed by the Ohio Department of Natural Resources within Mohican-Memorial State Forest, and getting there requires stopping at the kiosk near the ranger station on County Road 939 in Perrysville before driving to the upper parking area. No reservations are taken in advance. Campers sign in, check the clipboard for occupied dates, and claim an open site. The last quarter-mile of road to the upper lot runs rough and rutted, so low-clearance vehicles may need to park short of the preferred trailhead.

From the upper lot, Site 10 sits roughly three-quarters of a mile down a well-marked trail. The walk passes mature trees along a wide access road that also serves as a mountain bike route. The site itself opens into a broad area with room for multiple tents and several spots suitable for hammocks. A fire ring is in place. No water source exists on-site, so all water must be packed in, which adds noticeable weight in warmer months. There are no toilets; leave-no-trace practices apply. Cell signal here is limited but tends to be stronger than at the other nine Park and Pack sites.

Crowd management is worth planning around. Unregistered campers have shown up at Site 10, and the kiosk system relies on self-reporting. Checking the signup board carefully, including departure dates, helps avoid conflicts. Trash occasionally appears in the fire ring. The NE edge of the site has a short path leading down to a ledge with informal fire rings and open sightlines toward the gorge below.

Other options in the area include Mohican Memorial State Forest Park and Pack Site 1 and Park and Pack Campsite 3 — Mohican-Memorial State Forest for campers who want to compare sites before signing in at the kiosk. Hikers who have spent time here tend to return; as Anna S. puts it, "I've run hundreds of miles on the trails." Fall and winter visits, when the gorge opens up through bare branches, are worth considering.

Visitors often highlighted the spacious site with great tent and hammock options, though hiking in water and dealing with no facilities is required. Registration confusion and illegal camping incidents were noted concerns.

Perfect except for getting the site crashed by a rowdy group

I planned to stay Friday and Saturday. I went to the kiosk, and happily discovered no one was at this site, which was my preferred site. I triple-checked. But when I got there, there were about 10 men, in 4-5 tents already set up. I went back and checked the kiosk, and they were not registered. I stayed anyways, down the a little ledge to the left when looking at the site. I didn't have a fire, but it was beautiful. That night, however, the group was very loud and I felt unsafe. I packed up in the morning and spent the next night in my Outback in the parking lot, which worked out because it rained and so I didn't have to deal with packing up wet gear. It was very disappointing that group was there and disrupted a beautiful weekend. Mohican is amazing, I've run hundreds of miles on the trails. Will absolutely be back to this site

Mohican Memorial State Forest, Park & Pack, Site #10

This was my second time enjoying Mohican State Forest’s Park & Pack sites. I took my daughter to site 10 for an overnighter.

If you’re unfamiliar w/ the Park & Pack system I found this PDF to be extremely useful.

http://www.backpackohio.com/etrails/bpo_mohican.pdf

As others have stated, make sure to sign in at the kiosk, you can find it here:

950 ODNR Mohican Road 60 (County Road 939), Perrysville, Ohio 44864

There’s no reservations, you show up, see what sites are available, sign in and drive to the appropriate parking area.

After signing in at the kiosk we drove and parked at the upper parking area for sites 8-10. The last 1/4 mile of the road is pretty rutted, so if you have a low profile vehicle you may need to park at the lower area (which isn’t much of a parking area and the Rangers don’t really want anyone parking there).

Site 10 is about 3/4 of a mile down the trail from the upper parking area. Well marked and easy to find. There are plenty of areas to set up shelter and hang hammocks. After my daughter and I set up camp near the fire ring we explored and found spots below the SE edge.

You can find a short “trail” at the NE edge of the campsite that leads down to a ledge where a couple unofficial fire rings have been built. You can also get there by continuing east past the last Site 10 trail marker. The trail is a bit over grown but was still easily followed. It will loop around towards the south then back west leading into the lower area.

The whole area is beautiful and scenic. I’d like to head back in the fall and or winter to enjoy the view of the gorge in different seasons. The site is fairly remote, we only saw a hiker while hiking in and heard mountain bikers riding down the trail NW of Site 10. The only con I would give the site is there’s no water source, so you have to pack in all your water needs. Being the middle of summer that was quite a bit for my daughter and me. Packs were much lighter on the way out.

Stayed at campsite #8

.3 miles to the site from where you can park. Follow the markers for the site. The campsite was a nice quiet site. There was a little bit of trash in the fire ring but seen that more times than not. The ground was a little slanted everywhere we looked although we set up our tent in the dark arriving after dusk. Do not recommend that ever really!

As the other reviews state and are correct, go to the ranger station/kiosk in the park and fill out a park and pack camping registration sheet as well as signing the sheet hanging for picking a site. Check what sites people have reserved before you and double check when they are departing so you don’t reserve the same one they are staying at.

IMPORTANT: Personally the directions on the kiosk where you sign in are misleading and to me really just plain wrong. The directions were correct once we got to the trailhead BUT there was no way to know where the trail head was or what the name of it was, nothing. So we wondered around for like an hour walking a random trail in the dark and not finding anything. Finally we got online and found a handy dandy pic with the location of all the sites and trailheads. I updated the location of the trail head to the campsite for the posting here on the app. Again you must still register in the park which is a solid 5-10 min drive from the kiosk to the trailhead. The trail head is for campsites 8, 9 &10. We will post the picture and your life will be easier than ours. Enjoy and Happy camping!

Large spacious Covid19 friendly site

Take a walk down a dirt beaten path with mature trees towering and hang a right and the path gets more eroded from rains, then you go up a slight steep hill and a big area is open for several tents to be set up, a few safe spots for hammocking. Lovely spot for after work camp set up.

Campsite 10 large and beautiful

Make sure you get a reservation at the kiosk by the ranger station in the forest. Do not go to the state park as that is completely different. For the forest office I go to Co Rd 939, Perrysville, OH 44864

Do not camp illegally or without a reservation. They do post signs and ask other campers to report the illegal camping.

The sunset photo is by the entrance of the parking lot to the campsite.  This is the 2nd easiest campsite to walk into out of the 10.  If you have any mobility issues this is the second best camp site to go to as most of it is along the wide access road and mountain bike trail. The parking lot was clean and easy to access.

I had limited cell phone signal while here but this had the best signal out of the 10 sites.

All of the Park and Pack camp sites do not have a bathroom. As you can see from this site I took the time to take a picture of the moon pole.  So do leave no trace of your bathroom habits.

This site was great for both hammocks and tents.  You could have a small group here and not feel crowded. The camp fire set up is awesome. We had another camper over by that spot so I didn't take pictures of his gear.  He had a hammock and tent set up. He was camping at the spot for a week for his vacation. On our last night at this site another backpacker came through and set up.  Make sure you get a reservation and look closely at the board at the kiosk.  Our main camper at this site was gracious as he had booked the site for the week most folks didn't realize the site was taken as his name was so far up the clipboard.  We weren't alone in not realizing that and he enjoyed the brief company we provided as good neighbors to each other.
