The roads leading into Trace State Park require careful navigation due to numerous potholes, though they remain passable for RVs up to 50 feet. This Mississippi state park campground sits on the shores of a lake that has been drained for levee repairs, leaving behind a landscape of dry lakebed and weeds where water once lapped at campsite edges.
Campers find themselves in one of three distinct camping areas, each with its own character. The Deer Run and Eagle Ridge sections offer more shade and rustic appeal, while the Warrior Trails equestrian area features concrete pads and fewer trees. Sites include full hookups with water, electric, and sewer connections, plus fire rings and picnic tables. Stacy D. notes the staff responds quickly to maintenance issues: "We had an issue with the electric hookup and they had maintenance workers to us within 20 minutes."
Multi-use trails accommodate hikers, horseback riders, ATVs, and dirt bikes, though the separate equestrian camping loop keeps motorized noise away from other campers. Disc golf provides additional recreation, and fishing remains possible despite the low lake levels. The park maintains adequate spacing between sites for privacy, with varying levels of shade depending on location.
Bath houses show their age but remain clean, with the Eagle Ridge facility offering newer amenities including coin laundry and a community room. Cell service runs limited, with T-Mobile providing about one bar of coverage. The park stays open year-round with reservations available, and pets are welcome throughout the campground.
Tupelo lies about 15 minutes away for supplies and dining options. For those exploring the broader region, places to camp near Pontotoc offer additional overnight options. The proximity to the Natchez Trace Parkway makes this a convenient stop for travelers following the historic route through Mississippi.
Description
Trace State Park offers a quiet, natural retreat located just minutes from the excitement of Tupelo, one of Mississippi's fastest growing cities. Trace State Park offers a variety of outdoor activities ranging from fishing and water sports to exploring miles of secluded nature trails. Trace State Park also adds to Mississippi's History as within the park was once called the home of one America's early and colorful pioneers, Davy Crockett. Crockett lived here as a horse trader with the Chickasaw Indians after his defeat for re-election to Congress in his home state of Tennessee. It was while living here he learned of his friend, Sam Houston's plight in Texas and traveled there to help and was later killed in the Battle of the Alamo.
