Sitting along the shore of Great South Bay on Long Island's south shore, Heckscher State Park Campground runs a seasonal operation from late May through early September, with drive-in access directly off the Southern State Parkway. No pedestrian or transit access exists at the entrance, so a car is necessary. The campground sits within a flat, open layout where 69 tent and trailer sites share one large grassy area, with full hookup sites available for RVs up to 50 feet.
Site boundaries are minimal. Numbers are painted on the roadway rather than marked by physical dividers, and campers commonly cut across neighboring sites to reach the central restroom building. The atmosphere skews social and family-oriented, with regular ranger patrols and a small camp store near the entrance. Giselle P. notes that "park staff and rangers regularly patrol the campground and are diligent about cleaning up." Cell service is limited, with data available but slow. Those wanting more separation between sites should look toward the higher-numbered spots at the rear of the campground.
No built-in fire pits exist at standard campsites, though portable elevated fire pits are permitted, and the camp store rents them on site. Potable water spigots are spaced throughout the camping area, roughly at the corners of every four sites. The beach is about a mile away on foot, or a short drive. Kayak rentals and fishing are available within the park, along with hiking and biking trails. Campers who prioritize solitude or wooded surroundings will find this layout a poor match, but it works well for families or groups looking for camping near Heckscher State Park with reliable amenities and easy access from New York City.
Description
Heckscher State Park was once the 19th century estates of George C. Taylor and J. Neal Plum. William Nicoll, founder of the Town of Islip, originally built his estate on this property. The park was bought by the State of New York using a donation by the affluent August Heckscher with strong opposition from wealthy local residents. It was one of Robert Moses' most difficult fights to obtain land for public recreation on Long Island. Only with assistance and support from then Governor Alfred E. Smith was Moses able to close the deal on this beautiful property fronting the Great South Bay.
