Wind off Clarks Hill Reservoir is a defining feature at Mistletoe State Park Campground, and campers on exposed waterfront sites should plan for it. The 72,000-acre lake borders a large portion of the park's sites, and the majority of those sites sit directly on the water, making lake access one of the campground's most consistent draws. Weekdays tend to stay well under capacity; weekends, particularly Fridays onward, fill noticeably faster, so reservations are worth securing in advance. Camping near Appling draws visitors from across the Augusta region, and Mistletoe is one of the more fully equipped options in that corridor.
Site selection matters here more than at many campgrounds. The 60-90 loop draws consistent praise for combining water views with shade, and many of those sites are pull-throughs. Sites like 38 and 73 put campers within steps of the lake but offer little to no overhead cover, which becomes a real consideration during summer heat. The four walk-in tent sites sit apart from the main loops and have their own character: site 2 is closest to the water and suits tents well, while site 4 works better for hammocks. The rocky shoreline at those walk-in sites is slippery when wet, and lake levels fluctuate enough that water access varies by season.
Full hookups, including electric, water, and sewer, are available throughout the main loops, along with multiple comfort stations that reviewers consistently describe as clean and well-maintained. Several bathhouses include showers, and at least one has a washer and dryer. The park has roughly 17 miles of hiking trails at an easy to moderate grade, plus a designated swimming beach, kayak rentals, and multiple boat ramps. Winfield - J Strom Thurmond Lake is another campground in the area that accesses the same reservoir at a lower price point, managed by the Army Corps of Engineers.
Cell coverage is generally workable, with Verizon and AT&T users both reporting few issues in recent reviews. The park store stocks firewood, ice, and fishing supplies, though hours vary by season. As Chad H. notes, the park "gets really dark at night," which benefits stargazers but means a headlamp is essential for any walk to the bathhouse. Campers staying near the boat ramp loop should expect early morning activity and boat traffic. For the quietest experience, request a site on the outer loops away from the ramp, and book well ahead of holiday weekends.
