Big Sandy

Absolutely beautiful and definitely worth the hike in. Hailed pretty bad on us the first night but that is largely our own fault for not checking the weather prior to starting the hike. Worth visiting for sure. No mosquitoes this time of year

Small cg tough road

Well, after driving a long crappy rocky narrow FS road you get to a tiny 4 site CG next to the very busy and packed Backcountry TH with dozens of vehicles. The CG has no water, trash or a vault toilet, as the toilet is in the Backcountry TH parking lot. Only 4 small sites and $7 night/ $3.50 senior. All sites are FF. Note that the last 7 miles from the BLM/ FS boundary is narrow and rough and in a windstorm likely to be blocked by falling dead lodgepole trees. No cell service. I would never haul a TT into this CG, it would be shook up hard in my opinion

Bring bug spray

Absolutely beautiful! The scenery is breaking...just don’t inhale a mosquito! This camping area is 4 miles from the Big Sandy Trailhead. We stayed 2 nights here. We hiked over Jackass Pass and into the Cirque of the Towers. That is a sight to see! The fishing was so much fun! So many brook trout and even some cutthroats in Lonesome Lake at the Cirque of the Towers. The bus were pretty bad so make sure you bring Deet. This is a backpacking camping area in. Bear country to make sure you have rope to tie your food up. On the north side of the lake there are some bear boxes provided. We camped near the outlet and there were only fire rings. Some had some makeshift benches out of logs around the fire pits. Fire wood is kind of scarce in the area. Bring a small hatchet if you can. This is worth battling the mosquitos, I promise!

Directions

In Boulder, WY, take State Rt. 353 east 27.8 miles to campground sign. Turn left at sign and go 4.7 miles to a "Y" intersection and campground sign. Bear right and go 2.4 miles to a "T" intersection and another campground sign. Turn left and go 10.1 miles to still another "Y" intersection (Forest Rt. 850). Bear right onto Rt. 850 and go 0.7 miles to campground. NOTE: After 18.2 miles, the road becomes dirt and gravel with long stretches of rough washboard surface - not RV friendly.
