Best Tent Camping near Kemmerer, WY

Tent campsites near Kemmerer, Wyoming provide modest, rustic accommodations with minimal amenities. Kemmerer Tent Park, located in Frontier, Wyoming, offers basic tent camping with toilet facilities but lacks many amenities typical of developed campgrounds. Tail Race Campground, situated closer to town along the Green River, provides primitive tent sites with toilet facilities and fishing access below the Fontenelle Reservoir Dam.

Most tent campgrounds in the Kemmerer area have basic amenities with few modern conveniences. Sites typically include fire rings, though Kemmerer Tent Park has restrictions on fires. Picnic tables are available but often in poor condition, with reviews noting they are "pretty beaten up" with some broken tables being discarded. Vault toilets are present at most locations, but drinking water is scarce. Campers should plan to bring their own water supplies and practice proper waste disposal. The self-pay fee at Kemmerer Tent Park is $10 per night, though enforcement appears inconsistent.

The tent camping experience near Kemmerer offers access to outdoor activities despite the basic facilities. The Hamsfork River runs past Kemmerer Tent Park, providing opportunities for fishing. Tent campsites often have some tree cover for partial shade. For tent campers seeking more amenities, Bear Lake State Park Campground is located about an hour away, offering more developed tent campgrounds with drinking water, showers, and reservable sites. Lake Alice Campground provides a more secluded backcountry tent camping experience with a 1.5-mile hike to reach the lake, though it requires more self-sufficiency. A camper described Kemmerer Tent Park as "overgrown but good for a night" and noted it was "basically a little roundabout and you pick a spot to set up."

    Sunrise Campground

    Good campground, easily accessable

Sunrise CG is located right of hwy 89 about 10 minutes west of Garden City.  The CG sits above Bear Lake. The sites are pretty spacious, heavily wooded with good shade. There are picnic tables and fire rings at each site. There are 27 sites available. There are no hooks or dump stations. There a vault toilets and no showers. there is drinking wager available. This CG can accommodate walk in tent camping to RVs. You can reserve some sites on rec.gov.

This was a good stop that was convenient on the way through northern Utah. The camp host was awesome and funny.

    Lake Alice

Ranger Review: ICEMULE at Lake Alice Campground

Disclosure: It is NOT 3.5 miles to the campground, it is 1.5 to the lake and another to .25 or so to the camping area on the east side of the lake. The app on my phone was screwy. Sorry for the confusion in my videos.

Campground Review: For a primitive camping area this place is pretty sweet! They have metal fire rings with grills and there is an outhouse as well. The picnic tables are built of of half hewn logs. I did see that one of the tables at a site was badly broken, so everything is not in the best repair. There was also garbage left behind by the previous visitors which we packed out for them. The views more than make up for it, though! This lake is the most beautiful blue-green color. Lake Alice is home to the only pure lake strain of Bonneville Cutthroat Trout in Wyoming. We caught about 4 this trip but I wasn't quick enough with the camera to share any shots. We had to leave just as the fishing was getting good in the evening. Fish AM/PM, the wind can pick up in the afternoons, and temps rise making fishing not so great in the afternoon. Horseback riders are frequently in the area, so make way for them on the trail. We passed a string of about 8 riders going in further. You can trail ride through all the way to La Barge Creek Road. The campsite at the very beginning of the lake has a primitive corral for the horses. There are a few ambitious folks who have packed canoes into the lake. There are also some forest service water crafts locked away. Maybe if you had the right connections…It would be so fun to canoe this lake!

If you continue along Poker Creek Trail that follows the east side of the lake, you can visit Mount Isabel which is 5 miles from the start of Lake Alice. Poker Creek Trail will reach LaBarge Creek Road at mile 9.

Don'f forget to leave no trace! Picking up after others is frustrating.

Gear Review: ICEMULE Coolers https://icemulecoolers.com/collections/pro-coolers/products/the-icemule-pro-large Occasionally the Dyrt will provide gear to demo on camping trips. I had the opportunity to demo the ICEMULE Pro Large Soft cooler. I have been using this cooler for a little over a month now and it has come along on a variety of adventures and has not failed! This was the longest trek I've carried the cooler. We went for a day trip into Lake Alice. The trail to the lake is 1.5 miles. I was able to pack the fully loaded cooler with lunch, drinks, and snacks for 4, into the lake comfortably. I loved that this cooler has the crisscross bungee cord to hold additional gear. It held my fly rod case snugly as we packed in. The cooler has a vent on the side, you can inflate the side walls to help extend the insulating factor of the cooler. It also helps it float! The bag rolls closed like a dry bag and clips closed. The shoulder straps are adjustable and there is a chest strop for a good fit. It worked just as good as a garbage receptacle as we packed out trash we found in the campground. #leaveitbetterthanyoufoundit

    Lyman KOA

Nice KOA, just missing a couple minor items

Overall, a very nice KOA. Picnic tables are all new and maintained, new fire rings. I stayed in tent camping, and it was grassy and level.

Lots of drive thru spots for electric and hookups.

The staff greeted me warmly. The office was clean and maintained.

Bathrooms were clean, but a tad dated. But they were servicable, smelled clean.

Pool was being repaired at the beginning of .e.orial Day weekend. A bit of a bummer. Also, there waa no firewood that I saw for sale.

The grounds were about half full.

The other slight downside was I-80 noise. I made a video so you can hear the noise. Its about 1 mile away.

    I would stay here again!

    Fontenelle Creek Campground

    Camping right in the Reservoir

8/24/25 Beautiful view of the water and mountains in the background . Surrounded by hills. Just off highway 189. Very convenient for traveling. This was a quick overnight stop for us. There is a vault toilet, covered picnic tables and fire rings. Also a boat ramp. It was $7.00 FF no reservation needed. Very windy! No trees to block. There were only two other sites taken

Green River Fear-Reardon Draw Public Access Area

    Green River access and bugs!

The Green River has access areas developed by the WY Game and Fish with private landowners and in this case the BLM. Short gravel road from hwy. This is primarily a fishing drift boat ramp access and parking, but this site also allows camping for the BLM limit of 16 days. There are about 2-3 camp areas with fire rings and old tables. There is also a nice vault toilet. Cell signal id very good. However, no drinking water or trash dumpsters. Some hwy noise and a potential for locals to roll up in middle of night as this is close to Big Piney. Lots and lots of bugs though.

Birch Campground — Bear Lake State Park

    Not What We Were Expecting

The address we put into our GPS took us to the Marina so we drove further along the lake to Rendezvous Beach area where we checked in at the gate house with no problems. We then proceeded to the Birch campground(CG) FHU site 55, which was a pull through. The CG map shows there are 4 CGs(Willow, Birch, Cottonwood,& Big Creek). Big Creek is the oldest with a lot more shade trees than the other listed CGs. The CGs run in sequence along the south end of the lake. The sites are well spaced with a nice little covered patio with the picnic table. The beach is about 100 yards away and we had a sliver of lake view. We were surprised that dogs are not allowed on the park beaches. There was a fire ban that included charcoal grills(propane okay). We had great water pressure, used 15’ sewer hose, and received about 30 OTA channels. We had a clear shot to the southern sky, but didn’t need/use our satellite. We got 4 bars on Verizon. We where not sure what to expect when we decided to come to Bear Lake SP but we sure were not expecting it to be dog restrictive. Dogs are not allowed by the lake/beach or in day use areas so we were limited to walking them around the campground. We also were not expecting a tourist trap, sunning beach, and crowded with families during the week(Mon- Thur) late in August. There were plenty of CG workers but they did not keep up with the trash laying about. Our fire pit, which we couldn’t use, had trash in it to include a pair of kids underwear. We did enjoy going to Montpelier and visiting the Oregon/California Trail Center and Butch Cassidy Museum. One and done for us.

    Viva Naughton Marina by PacifiCorp

    Excellent fishing!

This campground is located along the bank of the Viva Naughon Resivoir. There are about 8 sites with picnic tables and fire pits, but is pretty primitive. There are vault toilets available near the boat ramp. The campground is FREE!

The fly fishing is excellent below the dam, which is about a 3/4 mile drive from the campground. The area is very popular with boaters and anglers alike. This place stays busy year round and ice fishing is very popular in the winter months.

I frequent this area often. I'm blessed to live 15 minutes from this great area in the town of Kemmerer.

    Weeping Rock Campground

Great little campground below Fontenelle dam.

Different sized sites to accommodate tent camping or RV. River access and great fishing. Sites have picnic tables and fire rings that include a cooking grate. Many sites also have a grill. Campground is pet and ATV friendly. Nice little camping spot, does get busy on the weekends.

    Kemmerer Tent Park

A stop for road biking, maybe

The sites are overgrown and not well maintained. There are fire rings ( look like wheel rims) with grates. The picnic tables are pretty beaten up and there is a "broken picnic table" pile beginning to form. There is a outhouse available. This is right off the WY State Hwy 233 just outside Kemmerer. The Hamsfork River runs past the campground area. There are some trees. The Oyster Ridge Music Festival takes place annually the last weekend in July and this may be an option if your attending the amazing free event!

There is a selfpay kiosk $10/night.

Guide to Kemmerer

Tent camping near Kemmerer, Wyoming offers campers access to the expansive Wyoming backcountry at elevations between 6,000-7,000 feet. The area experiences significant seasonal variations with summer temperatures reaching 85-90°F during July-August and cold winters with temperatures often below freezing. Most campsites provide minimal facilities, requiring campers to be largely self-sufficient with water and supplies.

What to do

Fishing opportunities: The Green River below Fontenelle Reservoir Dam provides excellent fishing access at Tail Race Campground, where the river moves rapidly at certain times of year. "The campground is on the banks of the Green River, just below the Fontenelle Reservoir Dam, with world class fishing," notes Carrie C.

Hiking trails: Access backcountry trails and high-elevation lakes from several primitive sites. Lake Alice requires a 1.5-mile hike to reach the water and offers extensions to more remote areas. "If you continue along Poker Creek Trail that follows the east side of the lake, you can visit Mount Isabel which is 5 miles from the start of Lake Alice," shares a camper.

Beach access: Bear Lake State Park offers unique turquoise water experiences for campers willing to drive about an hour from Kemmerer. "Crystal clear water. I don't normally get into lakes, but this was different. There is hiking and biking nearby - a little bit of something for everyone," explains Heather C.

What campers like

Secluded locations: Many tent campers appreciate the relative isolation available at primitive sites near Kemmerer. At Lake Alice, "For a primitive camping area this place is pretty sweet! They have metal fire rings with grills and there is an outhouse as well. The picnic tables are built of half hewn logs."

Natural beauty: The high desert and mountain landscapes provide distinctive scenery. "The views more than make up for it, though! This lake is the most beautiful blue-green color. Lake Alice is home to the only pure lake strain of Bonneville Cutthroat Trout in Wyoming," reports a visitor.

Free camping options: Budget-conscious campers appreciate that some areas have no fees. The Tail Race Campground provides free camping, though facilities are basic: "The campground itself leaves more to be desired, but it is FREE. The picnic tables are in need of a fresh coat of paint, but are sturdy."

What you should know

Limited amenities: Most tent camping near Kemmerer requires self-sufficiency. "Overgrown, no portapotty, and no separated campsites but it was really good for crashing for a night. It's basically a little roundabout and you pick a spot to set up," explains Theresa N. about Kemmerer Tent Park.

Weather considerations: The area experiences significant seasonal variations with strong winds common in the afternoons. One camper advises: "Fish AM/PM, the wind can pick up in the afternoons, and temps rise making fishing not so great in the afternoon."

Pack-out requirements: Limited trash facilities mean campers need to pack out all waste. "We packed out trash we found in the campground. #leaveitbetterthanyoufoundit," mentions a conscientious camper about maintaining backcountry sites.

Tips for camping with families

Shallow swimming areas: For families seeking water activities, Bear Lake State Park Campground offers gradual-entry swimming. "The beach has fine sand and the water depth is super gradual - it'll take 50-60 yards to get waist deep," notes Heather C.

Day use options: Some areas work better for day trips than overnight stays with children. "Down a bit is a picnic area where you could do a day camp but no overnight. After all that we ended up going towards Garden City area and ended up finding a beach to swim and have lunch at."

Early arrival recommended: Popular sites fill quickly during peak season. "It was 1st come 1st serve and I would suggest you get there as early as you can," advises Shani C., noting that Bear Lake areas become crowded after noon.

Tips from RVers

Glamping alternatives: For those seeking a tent camping experience with more amenities, Conestoga Ranch offers luxury tent options. "Located in Garden City, Utah on the beautiful Bear Lake Conestoga Ranch offers luxury tents and a chance to stay in a covered wagon," explains Glen B.

RV hookup options: Full service RV sites are limited near Kemmerer. "We had a wonderful time! Great campsite near the water," reports a camper at Cottonwood Campground, which offers full hookups approximately an hour from Kemmerer.

Narrow roads: Many access roads to the best tent camping near Kemmerer require careful navigation. Some routes like those to Lake Alice require parking and hiking in, making them unsuitable for large rigs.
