    Douglas KOA

    Jackalope Capital

    Douglas KOA

Home of the Jackalope! Douglas, Wyoming that is. They claim the original “discovery” of the Jackalope and everyone else just followed suit. There is a Jackalope silhouette outside of town on a hill, there are Jackalope lick Nessie’s throughout town and there is a Jackalope Square that has Farmers Market on Saturday’s that has a huge statute of said Jackalope.

The KOA is a larger one and more so like a parking lot then anything else. The staff were awesome! Very friendly and informative. A few things of note, the trash receptacles are placed throughout the campground which is nice. The dog park is a bigger one and there were actually locations for horses.
Not much shade AT ALL, and the wind whip’s through a lot. I was informed though that’s a Wyoming thing anyway. Miniature golf, swimming pool and camp kitchen as expected. The WIFI , I’m sorry to say, sucks and is not private. I’ve noticed in my travels though that NONE of the KOA’s have very good WIFI. I was fortunate and got an end site, near the office/shower (clean w/short shower heads and counters)and I had shade. A few days before I arrived in early September it had already snowed and the temperature had dropped into the 20’s. It was in the 50’s my first day and is a comfortable 75 today with a lite breeze. Douglas has some interesting history and historical sites nearby so it’s worth a visit if your exploring the old west or just driving through. Make sure you keep your gas above 1/2, the highways are a long way between gas stations and the speed limits are usually 70-80 MPH.

    Casper KOA

A good place to stop for the night

This campground is Located in Barr Nun area outside of Casper. It is all gravel and campsites are very close together. They have a shop in the office area. Along side the office is a little putt-putt golf course-fun fun. There is a propane fill station along with an indoor pool in this area too. There are 2 small dog areas which are also gravel except a small strip of turf at the end. We were in the Rv section with water and electric, our site had a picnic table but no fire pits. They also had areas for tents either on platforms or under shelters. Bathrooms are clean, attractive and handicap accessible. There are really cute cabins here also. This KOA served its purpose as a overnight stop.

    Guernsey State Park Campground

Panoramic Views with many camping options

I was looking for a place along I-25 to break up a drive, and I was not disappointed. I was a little apprehensive picking a place 10+ mile East of the highway, since I know most of the great views fo the Tetons are West of the highway, but this place delivered in spades.

First off, there are plenty of places to camp within the park. Choose from a beachside spot or a beach point (+100s of feet) view. I elected for a small, 3 plot only place called Davis Bay to get some solitude. The Ranger who ran into me during his rounds of the grounds said this place is pretty vacant on weekdays (I camped on a Wed) with places like the above mentioned spots along with Yurts and a place called "the Castle" available for group rentals.

Overall the park is in really great shape, and I highly recommend a bike ride/hike/drive up to Brimmer's Point, which provides a lot of the views you'll see from the photos.

My area had no water, and I noticed the same from Beachside spots. Skyline View campgrounds was the one with the potable water.

While I imagine this place is fantastic for everything from water skiing and fishing to party boating along the river (with various launch points) it is highly dependent on the water level, which appears at the mercy of the township since this is a reservoir lake-related setup so if you're one for water sports, I recommend a call to the park to get a report on water levels.

River’s Edge RV and Cabin Resort

    Good for a stopover

This was a great spot for a one night stay; if we fished, it would be even better for a longer stay.

Pros: incredibly nice and accommodating staff, very clean, great seating on RV spots, lots of seating next to the river and by playground, good playground, extra toys for kids near playground

Cons: not a lot of space between RV spots, all gravel (but they laid down about 10’ of astroturf on each RV spot), river is more for fishing than anything else

    Guernsey State Park Campground

Hot and sunny - but might be nice with a boat

This was rated highly by others but we didn’t enjoy our stay. The State Park is spread out over a few miles around a lake formed by a dam. The entrance fee collector was not helpful in describing where to camp. Driving through it looks like you pay a fee to get in and then look for campfire rings for a dispersed camping site. Little loops are given different campground names.

It was hot and we needed some shade. We found one spot that was down a canyon and away from the water. We were the only ones in the loop so it was private but what a mess. Garbage was all over and I couldn’t even use the men’s vault toilet near us. Water pressure was amazing and garbage cans were easily found at the end of the canyon loop.

We did drive around to see the highlights and everything is out in the sun. They say they have miles of hiking trails but we didn’t go far because of the heat.

If you have a boat and get a spot by the water this might have been a different experience for us.

    Douglas KOA

    Nice campground

We stayed here for 4 days. We weren’t sure what to expect from such a small town but we’re pleasantly surprised. This KOA Has putt putt golf for $2,activities, a tennis court, basketball and swimming. Also something extra is a s’more shack and coffee cabin. There are ample amount of RV and tent sites. They offer cable and WiFi. We were frustrated with the WiFi as it was very spotty. There are 3 cabins with picnic benches and grill, and a yurt that they use for activities. As there is a fire ban right now there were no fire rings. The shop has RV and other essentials needed if you need. Also has a few groceries and souvenirs. Staff are helpful and kind and we had a nice stay.

Sandy Beach Dune and Willow — Glendo State Park

    Not being kept up

My husband and I are Wyoming residents who have been coming here for years. We went 3 times this last summer. This place is being treated terribly, not being cleaned and kept up, and the park is profiting off of out of towners who are coming in and taking over our land. The bathrooms in sandy beach are disgusting with the exception of one that appears to be cleaned daily. There were branches and debris everywhere and fire bans were in effect all summer long. Fire pits are there for a reason and have been forever, with our ancestors. The fire bans are completely unnecessary. The water level of the lake had shrunk significantly each time we came back which shows that it was not being refilled at all. And on top of all of this they were charging at least$5 more a night than the previous year. If you’re going to be taking our money and charging us more, then you need to take care of this land and stop allowing out of towners to come and take it over. This is our land and this is not going unnoticed by your residents.

River’s Edge RV and Cabin Resort

    Nice RV Park

Nice campground near Casper, WY. We just stayed for one night and they were able to accommodate us arriving late with us calling ahead. There is a grassy area by the river that is nice to walk your dog. Shower and bathroom area was clean. There is a little playground for kids.

The only cons was it is close to the train which was a noisy when it came by, but didn’t prevent us from sleeping. Full hook ups, pet friendly.

Guide to Douglas

The North Platte River flows through Douglas, Wyoming at an elevation of 4,816 feet, creating a riparian zone in contrast to the surrounding high plains environment. Summer temperatures average 80-85°F during daytime hours with significant cooling at night. Wind conditions frequently exceed 20 mph throughout the camping season, with most campsites offering minimal natural windbreaks.

What to do

River fishing access: River's Edge RV and Cabin Resort provides direct access to the North Platte River for anglers. "Amazing sites right on the river. We were in site 87 for just one night. Most sites have full hookups, ours had all but sewer. They have a dump station though," notes a visitor from River's Edge RV and Cabin Resort.

Historical exploration: Visit the Oregon Trail ruts near Guernsey State Park, approximately 45 miles southeast of Douglas. "Close to the Oregon Trail Ruts," confirms a camper who "stayed in the Yurts here for part of my honeymoon. Great views and very peaceful."

Water recreation: Sandy Beach Dune and Willow at Glendo State Park offers water-based activities when reservoir levels permit. "The lake was beautiful! Definitely recommend not camping straight on the beach unless you don't mind ants and buggy critters," advises a recent visitor to Sandy Beach Dune and Willow.

What campers like

Riverside camping spots: The waterfront sites at Platte River RV Park & Campground provide scenic river views. "Clean, plenty of space, nice people and beautiful! Was a very nice campground. Staff was nice, shower and bathroom were both clean. The River was amazing!! Such a fun park," shares one camper from Platte River RV Park & Campground.

Clean facilities: Douglas KOA maintains well-kept bathrooms and common areas throughout the property. "We arrived on July 4 for an overnight stay. Great staff, we were taken to our site by a staff member and assured that if thee was anything we didn't like, we could change," reports a recent guest.

Dog-friendly amenities: Multiple campgrounds near Douglas feature dedicated pet areas. "The little dog park and there's also river access, adding a touch of nature's charm to the experience," notes a camper about the pet facilities at Platte River RV and Campground.

What you should know

Limited shade coverage: Most camping areas around Douglas offer minimal tree cover. "Not much shade AT ALL, and the wind whips through a lot," explains a camper from Douglas KOA.

Seasonal operation: Several campgrounds operate on limited schedules. Casper KOA, about 50 miles west of Douglas, runs "Apr 15 to Sept 30" according to their listing information.

Site spacing varies significantly: Campground density differs widely across the region. "The campground, is nothing more than a flat, uninspiring patch of land that will transform into a mud pit at the first sight of rain. Shade? Forget about it," reports one candid reviewer about certain properties, while others note "sites were nicely spread out for a major CG."

Tips for camping with families

Indoor recreation options: Casper KOA offers activities for children during weather challenges. "We enjoyed this spot tremendously... Nice hookups easy in and out, clean laundry, pool and 2 dog parks are well lit and clean. The putt putt was a great addition for the kids," shares a visitor from Casper KOA.

Wildlife viewing opportunities: Several camping areas near Douglas offer chances to observe local fauna. "We had antelope visiting every night. Really neat place to stay," reports a family who stayed at a campground overlooking Casper.

Tips from RVers

Site length considerations: Some RV sites have limited space for larger rigs. "Although it was affordable for our 25 foot 5er, we barely fit in our assigned spot length wise. We parked the truck beside the camper which took up most of the outdoor space," cautions a visitor to Guernsey State Park Campground.

Utility placement: Check hookup locations before selecting sites. "The utilities were smartly placed in the middle of the site. WiFi was above average," mentions a camper who stayed at River's Edge RV and Cabin Resort.

Glamping close to Douglas, Wyoming: For those seeking luxury camping near Douglas, several resorts offer upscale accommodations. "We got to our campsite on the beach we were so excited! Walked out to out our stuff down, and looking at the ground it was OVERRUN with giant ants!" warns a glamper, highlighting the importance of site inspection when choosing premium camping spots.
