    Overview

La Prele Guard Station is located south of Douglas, Wyoming in Medicine Bow-Routt National Forest. It was originally built as a remote ranger station in 1936 by the Civilian Conservation Corps and was converted into a work center when the La Prele Ranger District was discontinued in 1956. The site was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1994. Today, it provides a unique lodging experience and delightful spot for guests seeking recreation and relaxation in south central Wyoming. The guard station is open from late May or early June through late October each year and is accessible by car except after snow events at the beginning and end of the season. Weather and road closures may impact opening and closure dates. Many modern conveniences are provided, but guests will need to bring a few of their own supplies to make their stay comfortable. The site now has propane lighting. Please note that due to the historic nature of the facility, pets, candles or other flame producing items are not permitted in the cabin.

    Recreation

Opportunities for hiking, fishing, rock climbing, mountain biking, and hunting can be found within the vicinity. OHV riders can access trails in the area as well. The trailhead for the Twin Peaks OHV trail is three miles north of La Prele Guard Station and provides great access for elk and deer hunters. The trail meanders through public land to the base of Twin Peaks. From the top of the peaks, views of the Laramie Mountains dominate the landscape.Anglers will enjoy fly fishing for a variety of trout in La Prele Creek and its many beaver ponds, some within walking distance from the cabin. Please respect the private land mixed in with public lands along the road and creek.

    Natural Features

The guard station sits in a grassy clearing surrounded by a mixed conifer forest at an elevation of 7,800 feet. Mountains define the landscape and La Prele Creek flows nearby.Wildlife viewing is abundant near the cabin, including elk and deer. Migratory birds, squirrels and an occasional black bear or moose find habitat in the forest as well.

    Casper, Wyoming

Deer and antelope still play near the Casper KOA Campground and RV Park. More than 75 percent of the world's pronghorn antelope live within a 90-mile radius of Wyoming's second-largest city. In many places, the Plains look unchanged from the days when the Oregon, California, Mormon, Bridger, Bozeman and Pony Express trails converged here along the North Platte River. Trail ruts are still visible. Visit the National Historic Trails Interpretive Center or browse pioneer exhibits at the Fort Caspar Museum and Historic Site. The campground is located in the town of Bar Nunn, five miles north of downtown Casper. At an elevation of 5,284 feet, the campground overlooks the City of Casper and commands an excellent view of the city and Casper Mountain to the south. Public tennis and basketball courts and a baseball diamond are located across the street, and golfers can choose from two public courses, one of which was designed by Robert Trent Jones, Jr. Or just relax in the big covered pool at the Casper KOA (Memorial Day to Labor Day). The whole family can make itself at home here with mini golf, a playground and a pet walk. Casper KOA is the only onsite owner operated full service campground in the area. We offer free restrooms with hot showers, a 24 hour coin op laundry and a convenience store and gift shop. And we welcome long-term campers all year round. Please join us on your next trip through Wyoming!

We wanted to offer the closeness of all the town’s amenities, and to make a smart cabin as well for those that are no longer pulling around RV’s. Now we want to offer that to others that are on their next adventure.

We have 4 Lots with Full Hookups with 30/50 AMP, free Wi-Fi, and outdoor eating area. Each lot is a back in space with up to 40 ft campers accommodated.

We have one cabin for rent in Lot 5 as well. Call us for information related to the cabin at 307-735-4152.

We have put a lot of thought, and design elements into the property to ensure those who visit have a great experience!

    Douglas KOA

    Nice campground

We stayed here for 4 days. We weren’t sure what to expect from such a small town but we’re pleasantly surprised. This KOA Has putt putt golf for $2,activities, a tennis court, basketball and swimming. Also something extra is a s’more shack and coffee cabin. There are ample amount of RV and tent sites. They offer cable and WiFi. We were frustrated with the WiFi as it was very spotty. There are 3 cabins with picnic benches and grill, and a yurt that they use for activities. As there is a fire ban right now there were no fire rings. The shop has RV and other essentials needed if you need. Also has a few groceries and souvenirs. Staff are helpful and kind and we had a nice stay.

    Jackalope Capital

    Douglas KOA

Home of the Jackalope! Douglas, Wyoming that is. They claim the original “discovery” of the Jackalope and everyone else just followed suit. There is a Jackalope silhouette outside of town on a hill, there are Jackalope lick Nessie’s throughout town and there is a Jackalope Square that has Farmers Market on Saturday’s that has a huge statute of said Jackalope.

The KOA is a larger one and more so like a parking lot then anything else. The staff were awesome! Very friendly and informative. A few things of note, the trash receptacles are placed throughout the campground which is nice. The dog park is a bigger one and there were actually locations for horses.
Not much shade AT ALL, and the wind whip’s through a lot. I was informed though that’s a Wyoming thing anyway. Miniature golf, swimming pool and camp kitchen as expected. The WIFI , I’m sorry to say, sucks and is not private. I’ve noticed in my travels though that NONE of the KOA’s have very good WIFI. I was fortunate and got an end site, near the office/shower (clean w/short shower heads and counters)and I had shade. A few days before I arrived in early September it had already snowed and the temperature had dropped into the 20’s. It was in the 50’s my first day and is a comfortable 75 today with a lite breeze. Douglas has some interesting history and historical sites nearby so it’s worth a visit if your exploring the old west or just driving through. Make sure you keep your gas above 1/2, the highways are a long way between gas stations and the speed limits are usually 70-80 MPH.

    Casper KOA

A good place to stop for the night

This campground is Located in Barr Nun area outside of Casper. It is all gravel and campsites are very close together. They have a shop in the office area. Along side the office is a little putt-putt golf course-fun fun. There is a propane fill station along with an indoor pool in this area too. There are 2 small dog areas which are also gravel except a small strip of turf at the end. We were in the Rv section with water and electric, our site had a picnic table but no fire pits. They also had areas for tents either on platforms or under shelters. Bathrooms are clean, attractive and handicap accessible. There are really cute cabins here also. This KOA served its purpose as a overnight stop.

Home if the Jackolope & Everything you could need

Whether you need a place to park for the night or for the week this is a good choice. There are a few down falls like no trees big enough to give you shade making it really hot. It is full hook ups with cable and WiFi. There is a dog run, mini golf, and pool. There weren’t as many campers this year and staff thought maybe because the high gas prices and that Yellowstone flooded might be the cause. The staff was really friendly. In the shop I was impressed that they supported local business. There’s also free internet and computer to use as well as a free coffee bar in the shop. Found out that it’s under new ownership and they’ve decided not to have horse ring and pens anymore. There are a few cabins and tent areas. You can hear a bunch of traffic noise. Otherwise it’s a nice park

    Guernsey State Park Campground

Panoramic Views with many camping options

I was looking for a place along I-25 to break up a drive, and I was not disappointed. I was a little apprehensive picking a place 10+ mile East of the highway, since I know most of the great views fo the Tetons are West of the highway, but this place delivered in spades.

First off, there are plenty of places to camp within the park. Choose from a beachside spot or a beach point (+100s of feet) view. I elected for a small, 3 plot only place called Davis Bay to get some solitude. The Ranger who ran into me during his rounds of the grounds said this place is pretty vacant on weekdays (I camped on a Wed) with places like the above mentioned spots along with Yurts and a place called "the Castle" available for group rentals.

Overall the park is in really great shape, and I highly recommend a bike ride/hike/drive up to Brimmer's Point, which provides a lot of the views you'll see from the photos.

My area had no water, and I noticed the same from Beachside spots. Skyline View campgrounds was the one with the potable water.

While I imagine this place is fantastic for everything from water skiing and fishing to party boating along the river (with various launch points) it is highly dependent on the water level, which appears at the mercy of the township since this is a reservoir lake-related setup so if you're one for water sports, I recommend a call to the park to get a report on water levels.

    Showerhouse Closed!

Its a beautiful state park and I’m glad to have camped here during my travels around Wyoming. I stayed at Newell Bay as its first come first serve. The price for the park is $30 for 1 day and 1 night which is a bit expensive. My only complaint is that the showerhouse is closed! I wish it had stated that on the website, it said it was open as of April 15th but they havent turned the water on yet. If you plan to use the showerhouse, call the park first and check its open!

    Guernsey State Park Campground

    Extremely large State Park

I think I gave this park four stars out of low expectations. Middle of nowhere Guernsey Wyoming the state park wraps around a reservoir with beautiful rock formations. There are campgrounds scattered all over and around the campground. If you were in a big rig this is not the easiest place to camp… Be careful where the office places you if you are in a large trailer RV. There are many switchbacks and some elevation to climb. Once you’re on top at the overlooks it’s very scenic. Be careful of the weather change… Within 24 hours the forecast changed from 80° to 35° fortunately we had a Yurt with wood stove.

River’s Edge RV and Cabin Resort

    An oasis in the desert

Let me start by explaining that 3-stars is usually the highest an RV Park will get from me. I am tempted to give it 4, but some pretty great places have a 4 from me (like Yellowstone). I believe that rating everything high, kind of causes the system of starring to lose perspective. 1 Star=Never Again, 3 is average, and 5 Stars=I don’t ever want to leave. As much as I car camp for convenience, I prefer more remote spaces, which is not an RV Park (so there is my bias). 3 is an average rating and this is a really nice spot—but being in the middle of not-much in South Eastern Wyoming, it’s hard to be totally wowed. Additionally, we camped here during the total eclipse of 2017. As a result, the Park was at maximum capacity, and I believe, expanding. The owners are super hospitable. Even with the event in progress, they did choose to charge more to camp rather than overcrowd the campers (much appreciated and very honest). There is an excellent game room. The showers are very clean. There is laundry and a small play area. The RV sites are the typical pull through RV Park sites, and not spacious. The campground, like much of Wyoming is flat, sunny, and with a gravel “yard” that replaced the tall, golden yellow grasses that stretch across these dry plains.

We camped in a tent. The owners had created new tent sites that were directly on the North Platte River. These tent sites, and the staff friendliness are earning the 3 stars. There were trees for shade and a nice breeze coming over the water. There was a good deal more privacy than the RV sites. My understanding was that these were intended to remain as permanent tent sites even after the eclipse. There are no hook-ups at all for the tent sites, and campers cannot back into their camp for convenient grabbing of stuff—a very short walk is required (but far enough to notice the distance). In some ways, this distance from the car, and the line of trees made the campsite feel a little more remote and like resting at an oasis in the desert.

    Casper KOA

    Definitely Wide Open Spaces...

We actually would rate this KOA campground as 3.5 stars, because there are some redeeming qualities, but overall it is a better place to just pass through for a night than to plan a long-term stay.

The location is very nice, being just north of Casper, Wyoming, and easy to get off and on the interstate. Surprisingly, this campground was rather quiet despite being near the highway. In addition, there are two bar and grill style restaurants that you can walk to within a couple minutes.

This campground has level sites, but everything is gravel outside of the playground. There are two areas that offer shade trees, mostly for the big rigs, but most sites are out in the sun and close together. We had to share our water and sewer area with the camper next to us. Luckily, he had an adapter for the intake hose, because his outlet was stripped and he could not hook up otherwise. I did not see any tent campers at the time of our stay, but there is a small area available that was grassy.

The pros of this campground include an INDOOR pool, which was heated and felt great. They have a mini-golf area that is due for renovation later this summer, so it is currently offered at no charge. It was fun enough for our 10- and 6-year-olds. The playground is small but nice, and the bathrooms are well-kept. We did not use the showers.

Another pro was the host, Susan. She was very knowledgeable about the area, sociable, and willing to work with anyone who had issues. I found her fun to talk with and she even gave our kiddos some free KOA cups!

Overall, if you need a place to stop for the night, this will suffice. If you want to park comfortably for a couple of days or more, you may want to look elsewhere.

Check out at 11 and they close bathrooms 10 to 12, not smart since u have tent sites and they need a bathroom. Tent spots were nice with grass. No fire pits! Overall fine.

    A bit tight

Although it was affordable for our 25 foot 5er, we barely fit in our assigned spot length wise. We parked the truck beside the camper which took up most of the outdoor space. The water tastes a bit funny even after our filter system. We stayed twice, coming and going so not a horrible place but also not a destination campground.

This is a well cared for park and a great place to spend the night. Easy in/ easy out with a big rig. It also has a cute walk-up coffee shop which we unfortunately didn’t get to take advantage of. Looks like a great stopover if you’re hauling horses!

Lovely Vista from our campsite; friendly staff

We arrived on July 4 for an overnight stay.  Great staff, we were taken to our site by a staff member and assured that if thee was anything we didn't like, we could change.  It was quiet, even for a holiday, and the fireworks were a couple miles away, so we could see them but not hear them.  A plus for our super anxious pup who doesn't like thunder or fireworks!

    La Prele Guard Station

Remote cabin all to your group

We didn’t stay here but it sounds pretty amazing. Reservations are needed and for $80 per night you get the whole place. The drive is pretty stunning and you find yourself in the middle of the Medicine Bow National Forest. Two blocks down the road is Campbell Creek Campground. We chose to stay there. It is only $10 per night and we didn’t have reservations. By the look of the place, and from talking to other campers, La Prele Guard Station sounds like a great place to camp if you have a group looking for a confirmed place all together.

Camp consists of a few buildings and a very spacious groomed area. It’s fenced off by a simple log fence. The style reminds me of lodges I’ve seen in documentaries about the National Parks.

Very Very Nice Restrooms and Showers

Alongside a creek outside of Casper, sits this very quaint RV park. Open all year, a great rest stop to get out of windy conditions if I-25 is closed. Trees at most campsites. Was really impressed with how clean the restrooms and showers were.

    Good for a stopover

This was a great spot for a one night stay; if we fished, it would be even better for a longer stay.

Pros: incredibly nice and accommodating staff, very clean, great seating on RV spots, lots of seating next to the river and by playground, good playground, extra toys for kids near playground

Cons: not a lot of space between RV spots, all gravel (but they laid down about 10’ of astroturf on each RV spot), river is more for fishing than anything else

    Amazing Stop!!

Beautiful sites right on the river. We were in site 87 for just one night. Most sites have full hookups, ours had all but sewer. They have a dump station though.

Each site has a turf area with clean and maintained patio furniture.

Clean showers/bathrooms. Riverside is mowed down low, big grass fields. Bring mosquito spray though!
