What to do
Mini golf recreation: The free mini golf course provides a welcome activity for travelers needing a break from the road. "A little pricey at $60 but the cleanliness of the bathroom/showers was worth it. The laundry area was great. Yes it's a great big gravel parking lot but it's actually very nice," notes Jessica B. about Western Hills Campground.
Fishing opportunities: Rim Lake recreation area offers fishing when water levels permit, though conditions vary seasonally. "I camped right by, what used to be, Rim Lake. Its all dried up now. The area was very quiet, I was the only one camping there. There were fire pits set up to cook on," shares Caley M. about Rim Lake.
Wildlife viewing: The open landscape around Hanna provides opportunities to spot pronghorn antelope, deer, and various bird species. "There was a good amount of wildlife, birds, coyotes, deer. Its nothing special but a perfect place to post up for the night," continues Caley M. about the natural surroundings.
What campers like
Clean shower facilities: The exceptionally clean bathrooms and private showers receive consistent praise from overnight travelers. "This campground is convenient, right off I80. The full hook up sites are nice, campground is clean and quiet. Excellent showering facilities," reports Ashley L. about Western Hills Campground.
Convenient laundry access: The coin-operated laundry facilities provide a practical amenity for long-distance travelers. "This is a really big gravel lot with zero shade, zero privacy, and highway noise. The bathrooms were nice and showers clean. They also have a wonderful coin laundry room, a mini golf putting course and kids playground," explains Ashley M.
Yurt camping options: While traditional yurt camping near Hanna, Wyoming is limited, Western Hills offers alternative glamping accommodations. "Great spot for overnight, coin laundry, restrooms, free showers, general store. All rv types welcome," states John C., highlighting the campground's versatility for different camping styles.
What you should know
Limited shade: The campground terrain consists primarily of gravel with minimal natural shade. "We loved the wild west charm of this campground and the putput golf course! Very clean and nice showers/laundry facilities. The only drawback is the lack of shade and terrible cell service," advises Lani R.
Variable cell service: Mobile reception can be unreliable in the area, affecting both voice and data connectivity. "The campground staff were incredibly nice and our parking spot was level. We had full hookups, all of which worked well. The showers and restrooms were clean and we did not use the laundry, but there was one," reports James W. about Western Hills Campground.
Lake water levels fluctuate: Water levels at nearby Rim Lake vary significantly by season and year. "No problem with Google maps to find it. The lake is pretty high and there are a couple of picnic tables almost in the water. With the water this high the road around the lake is maybe 12" above the water," observes Brian W.
Tips for camping with families
Playground amenities: The simple playground area provides recreational space for children. "To be fair, I did not have high hopes for this campground, but after getting here, it has surpassed my expectations! The grounds are very simple as other reviewers have stated, but it is very clean. A very simple playground, the mini golf is a great touch that is different than most campgrounds," reports Amber W. about Western Hills Campground.
Dog-friendly accommodations: Pet areas are available for families traveling with dogs. "Yes, it is a dirt lot. There was very little with the night we spent. Facilities were clean. Dog area was well kept grass in fenced area," notes Steven V.
Budget considerations: Prices vary significantly by site type and hookup needs. "I would say that it is pricey for what you get since we paid $90 for the night, but overall it was in the middle of the next stop and has everything you need," advises Amber W.
Tips from RVers
Site selection matters: Some sites offer better positioning than others. "This campground is over priced by at least 30 bucks. No mature trees, no escorts, help is borderline rude, staff tried to put me in site one by office so we could eat everyone's dust. Camp nearly empty, I asked for a different site and she put me right next to one of the 3 campers in the park," cautions Dave K.
Full hookup availability: RV sites with complete utilities are available for travelers seeking convenience. "This place was wonderful. We have a small teardrop trailer with no hookups and they had a perfect pull through spot for us. Everyone was very nice and helpful. The bathrooms really put this place on the top of our list though," shares Margo about Western Hills Campground.
Nearby services: Essential services for restocking supplies are located conveniently. "There's also a cute little restaurant, a Maverick, and a Walmart nearby," notes Lani R. about the surrounding amenities.
