Located on the southern end of the Medicine Bow Mountain Range in north central Colorado, Rawah Wilderness was designated by the Wilderness Act of 1964 and now contains 73,868 acres. "Rawah" is a Native American term meaning "wild place."

Elevations in the Rawah Wilderness range from 8,400 to 13,000 feet. The high peaks were carved by glaciers, resulting in spectacular cirque lakes and moraines. There are twenty-five named lakes, ranging in size from five to 39 acres. This high alpine area contains the headwaters of the McIntyre, Rawah, and Fall Creeks, as well as the Laramie River.

The Rawahs are host to mammals such as elk, moose, mule deer, black bear, bighorn sheep, marmot and beaver. There are many species of birds including the red-tailed hawk, white-tailed ptarmigan, golden eagle, raven, Steller's Jay and a variety of warblers. Lakes and streams are inhabited with lake, cutthroat, rainbow and brown trout. Graylings are also found in this area.

The Rawah Wilderness is very popular with summer backpackers, hikers and anglers. It is also popular with hunters in the fall. To encounter the fewest people, plan your trip for mid-week and use less popular trails.

Always use Leave No Trace techniques to help keep this area wild, clean and pristine.

Motorized equipment, or mechanized transportation is prohibited, including motorcycles, chain saws, bicycles or carts. Wheelchairs are exempt. Group size is limited to 12 people and/or livestock combined. Camping and campfires are prohibited within 200’ feet of all lakes, streams and trails to protect water quality, sensitive vegetation and to help assure solitude. Thin soils and mountain vegetation are easily damaged by fire and fires scar rocks and soil. Use a stove, a fire pan or an existing fire ring when and where fires are allowed. Campfires are prohibited in the alpine areas above 10,800 feet. Campfires consume scarce vegetation and leave permanent scars on the fragile soils of the area. Pets must be on a handheld leash at all times if hiking. Equestrian riders can have dogs under voice control.

Ranger Review: Morsel Spork XL at CanyonSide Campground

    Campground Review

This campground is located in the Poudre Canyon area of Colorado. This is a private, 420-friendly campground. While many will be drawn to that allure, there is a lot of other features this campground offers that makes it a lovely place to stay. There’s communal fire pits, a jungle gym for kids, and hiking trails into and up the Poudre Canyon. It’s also a good place to bunk if you like to fish, with access into the rivers just across the road and so many other spots just a short drive away. Across the road is a general store for any last-minute camping supplies, munchies, booze, and ice. There’s also the Poudre Canyon Grille – a tiny, well-kept trailer serving up burgers, fries, and other fast food sandwiches. Near the office, there’s a large covered patio that has a cell and WiFi booster and in the summertime is a lounge area with a TV. There are two areas that have a bathroom with shower – both single use. When there are nearby music festivals, Canyonside has been known to shuttle festival goers to and from areas of greater access to help you enjoy the show. Speaking of shows, there are sometimes laser light shows where the hosts reflect their displays off the rocky canyon walls, and up the canyon there is also a small ampitheatre.

To learn more about what may be going on near the time of your stay, just call the campground. Which is also what I suggest you do before you book, especially if you’re interested in renting one of their really cool themed cabins (there’s a few, are different sizes, and each have a unique décor theme and were all incredibly clean). There are a few factors like the day of the week, amount of people, and amount of dogs you have that will affect your nightly rate. Ask about the dog policy when you call too, as not all sites allow for pets – like the tent sites – and there is a pet waiver that should be read.

One thing I noticed that was neat for tent dwellers was that one area of the tent sites (there are two sent site locations on either side of the park) had a hammock or swing chair and access to water to do dishes (there is also communal dishware) in addition to your typical flat plot, fire pit, and picnic table. There is also poured concrete sites for RVs with electric and water hookups, but I don’t remember seeing a dump station.

Not sure you want to go all the way in on a cabin but don’t want a tent site and you don’t own an RV? That’s OK as there’s also a pop up trailer on site that can be rented as a “glamping” option. It was a pretty neat little place, but due to the size and chance of trapping pet dander, dogs aren’t allowed in there either.

The hosts are very accommodating and want to help you enjoy your stay. They are approachable and can point you to resources to help you make your stay a 420-featured one, if that’s your thing. I understand they’re looking to add more tent sites and shaded areas and continue to tweak their internet to help it cover more of the grounds. I look forward to returning to see how the place evolves. I do like that there’s so many ways the hosts are there to accommodate you, and one thing that I would love to hear about is that they’ve added drinkable water access. Water is there for you but bring your own drinking water on site.

I want to give this place a 5 out of 5 because of how nice the hosts are, how well kept the grounds are, how many camping options there are, and how many activity options you have, but it gets a 4 out of 5 from me because of the water access, pet restrictions, and add-on fees (pet, extra guest), plus possible fines for any ‘dog infractions’. If you plan your trip ahead, you will have a great time here and really enjoy the atmosphere.

    Product Review

As part of the Dyrt Ranger program I am given camping gear to test from time to time, and today I was reviewing a new kind of spork, the Morsel Spork XL. This company makes 3 kinds: The regular sized spork, then the XL, and a spoon XL. I have the morsel XL spork. No better place to review a munchie-curing tool like a 420-friendly campground! I’ve used a lot of sporks over time, and there were three things about this one that I really liked.

    • it is long. At first I was like, “Why do I want a spork this big?” until I started using it with my rehydrated meals. I eat those right out of the bag and when you get near the bottom, with other sporks being shorter your hand starts picking up the juices/sauces from the dish when you start to really dig deep into the bag. This spork kept the pasta sauce on the food and away from my hands.
    • It had a flat edge end on the spoon side. I’ve seen this feature before and it’s an important one because it helps you dig down into the bottom of those bag meals better than a rounded spoon. May not seem like a big deal, but when you’re backpacking and those foods are your fuel, every morsel (see what I did there?) of food counts and a utensil that’s doing a better job than another is the one I’ll want to pack.
    • The rubberized outer coating. This creates a spatula-like effect and – again – helps with getting the most food on your spork, but also now has an argument as to why it could be used when cooking. I wouldn’t want a plastic spork stirring my eggs in case that thing melts into my food, but I’ve been using this morsel one on the stove top to mix simple meals and it does the job better than my JetBoil folding spatula because its rubberized and not as flimsy.

These sporks are nowhere near the lightest sporks on the market, but their added weight gives them more durability. They aren’t indestructible, but they won’t snap when they get shoved in your pack either. It is technically also a knife because of the ribbed edges of the fork, but I didn’t have a lot of success cutting with this. I love how it’s dishwasher safe and BPA free! Their versatility for camping makes them a better all-around solution for satisfying your hunger than what you’re using now. 4.75/5 because of the whole knife thing not really working super great.

Great campground with showers and laundry!

We stayed in the last tent site in the back of the property. It was close to the showers, restrooms, and laundry room. This was very quiet and peaceful. The RVs didn't run the generators so it was great! The camp hosts were very friendly and helpful. We went to the BBQ restaurant in the front of the building and had the best BBQ in Wyoming!

    2 night stay

Clean bathrom and showers. Even have a fitness center. 2 dog runs and 2 dump stations also. BarBQ restaurant, theyll deliver to your site. If they're busy then you'll be right on top of each other, spaces are maybe 12' apart. No firepits and picnic tables only at full service spots, water and electric. Overall the staff was nice and the area was clean so we'd stay again if we go back to/thru Wyoming.

    Adorable hidden campground

We had an A/C issue once we reached Wyoming and had to wait for a part. While waiting for it to arrive from Denver, we found a cute little RV park in Cheyenne, WY called AB Camping. It is a family-run, Christian campground and they served dinner until 8 pm. Who could resist some cowboy BBQ from the Wild West? The sites were full hook-ups, with free cable and wi-fi. There had nice restrooms with showers and a laundry facility. Most sites were shaded and the place was very neat and friendly. They also had a tent area and large pavilion. The boys ran around and played in the park almost until dark and then everyone had showers and settled in for a good night's sleep.Temperatures dipped down to around 50 degrees as we slept that night. The next morning, we weren't in a big hurry to go anywhere since the thermostat wasn't due in until around 1 pm via UPS. Jason caught up on some laundry and then we found a skate park in town to burn some more time. It was the nicest one I have ever seen and in a public park of all places. Glad to have found this little oasis to relax for a bit.

    A fine place to camp

Stayed here 2024/09/11. Easy access, well marked and well separated dispersed campsites.  Good views. Only downside was distant traffic noise from I-80. Would stay here again.

    LOVED it here!

We stayed in two different spots. The first one was nice but the second one was so spacious and had so many trees and was far from the road so traffic didn’t sound too bad. Had many fires in the available fire rings. The place is busy during the weekend but dead during the week, especially when it started to cool down. The pictures will speak for the amazing views!

    Easy Access, great site

We were driving through the area and needed a quick/easy place to camp for the night. Even in mid-July, we were the only people there. Spots are labeled well, with great fire pits at every sight. Rock formations were awesome. We nestled behind a rock and couldn’t even hear the traffic by nearby road. Definitely planning another trip soon

    Could be better …

Absolutely love this area of the Medicine Bow NF. Road in was manageable. Spacious dispersed sites. Most have fire pits. Lovely weather in June. Not as windy as the pilot hill rd or vedauwoo dispersed sites. Plenty of shade and hiking opportunities. Quiet throughout the week. Lots of vacant RVs. It appears that the locals leave their rigs and the forest service doesn’t enforce the 16 day limit. The same people will also ride their ATVs in your site. T-mobile signal is decent enough to code and to study. Lots of cows roaming around.

    Upper Blaire Dispersed Camping

Great Camp Sites with Fire Pits

The washboard road coming off the highway is harsh but it smooths out when you get closer to camp. There are at least three camp site I saw that are all secluded by boulders and trees. Each one has established fire sites. Others have chopped trees and branches from the nearby trees, but I'm not sure if that is accepted.

On a Sunday night, a group of younger people were drinking and enjoying a fire. They weren't too loud and packed up and left before it got too late. It looked like it gets pretty popular so I'd get there early if you're planning to go on a weekend.

You'll hear distant gunshots from hunters in case you or others in your party are sensitive to that. There were also plenty of gnats in early October!

    Upper Blaire Dispersed Camping

Great access to climbing, very basic camping

We found a set of campsites in the "Upper Blaire" climbing area.

**How to get there from US-30 **

    • *Refer map provided in campground website link

    • Approaching from the south: Take exit 329 for Vedauwoo Rd --> Turn left onto Vedauwoo Glen Rd --> Turn right onto Old US Hwy 30 E --> Drive 2.7 miles --> Turn right onto Blair-Wallis Rd / Forest Rd 705 --> Drive 3 miles --> Sharp right on Forest Rd 707 --> Drive 0.7 miles --> Turn right onto Forest Rd 707A then a few hundred feet turn right again onto Forest Rd 707AF --> drive to the end of the road a few hundred feet more and park.

    • **Approaching from the north: **Take exit 323 for WY-210 toward Happy Jack Rd --> Turn left onto WY-210 E / Happy Jack Rd then shortly thereafter turn left again to stay on WY-210 E --> Drive for 6 miles --> Turn right onto Headquarters Rd / Forest Rd 707 --> In 0.3 miles turn right to stay on 707 --> drive 2.7 mi --> Turn  left onto Forest Rd 707A --> Turn right in a few hundred feet onto Forest Rd 707AF--> drive to the end of the road a few hundred feet more and park.

These sites are primitive and have a nice secluded feeling. You cannot see or hear the highway from here. There was spotty cell service (we have T-mobile). There are no facilities here, but if you would like to access picnic tables or a vault toilet, the Blair Picnic Area is not far away:  https://www.fs.usda.gov/recarea/mbr/recarea/?recid=22894. Make sure to pack plenty of water, you can fill up at the Abraham Lincoln Memorial rest area.

If you want to do some rock climbing in the area, these sites are very convenient.

    Some words of caution:

    • there are cows roaming free in this area. You might find them blocking the road or next to your tent when you wake up (!)
    • a lot of broken glass at the sites near the parking area
    • there are many fell trees in the area, and it was very gusty when we were there, so make sure to check weather in advance to avoid strong winds that might bring trees down

The area was beautiful and had plenty to do, but wasn’t as isolated as I was expecting. Went for a Tues-Sat trip and I’m glad we went during the week. Once Friday night hit we could stand at the front of our tent and see 3 other campsites plus had to listen to music/movies coming from all 3 sites. If you don’t mind having neighbors it would be great, as someone who loves to be isolated it was okay.

    Beautiful Spot

It is a beautiful place to camp, all spots within walking distance to the lake. Some of the handicapped marked sites seem to be hard to access.

    Lost Lake Campground

    Easy Isolated Perfection

Definitely should have a 4 wheel drive to get out there, but you are able to drive right up! The camp grounds are big enough to support lots of people (and trust me, we had lotssss) but you totally feel isolated when you are there. The lake is beautiful and it's easy to but in a kayak, tube, etc. There is also great chances to climb, play around on the rocks, etc while there! I love this campground! Just fyi, cell service is reallllly spotty and you may not have any (not at all a bad thing just be sure to let people know where you are!)

    Nice Fam Camp

Sites are gravel and not all are very level. Grounds are not well maintained. Lots of trees. Prairie Dogs are prolific. Pronghorn deer wander all over the base.

    Home bound

Directions need to include crossing two bridges after dirt road. Very nice park and large spaces. Top of the line for a military camp

    Basic Site

Has everything you need as far as hook ups and bathroom/showers. More of a place to park and then drive to where you plan on doing things as there are no activities at the grounds. Need base access in order to use.

    Nice area

Nice camping area. Downside is the train tracks are close by. Not a problem though, it is a no train horn area. Nice RV spots with water and electric. Sewer dump on property as well. Tent camping is available as well as cabins. Lots of history at F.E. Warren AFB.

Over night stop on way Rushmore

Was nice one night stop on way to Mt Rushmore area. Did loose power about midnight. Same to neighbors power. Both our power protectors said reverse polarity. 25 minutes later power came back on.??? Was good night stay with daughter and two grandsons. In August 2020.

    Great Facility

There’s a old saying. “Getting there is half the fun.” Ok we didn’t have fun. The primary access gate is closed, a sign inside the base says “details on FB”. Thanks! We entered the base via Gate 5. Easy enough. Then followed the signs. Which took us to a rail road underpass with a No RV sign and posted 11 1/2 ft clearance. Sigh! Found Old Glory Rd with a surface crossing. Presto! The base commissary and AAFES exchange is right down the road. So to recap. Enter base via Gate 5. Turn left on Rogers Ave, left on Randall, right on Old Glory, right on Missile Dr, right on S Creek Dr and left on Fam Camp rd.
As for the Camp, great facility. Office closed on the weekend, self check in. This is a come back place!

    Creedmore Lakes Campground

    Peaceful Paradise

We decided to camp on the other side of the lake which was about 1/2 mile in. It was well worth the work. This is one of the quietest places on earth and it was magnificent! Waking up and watching ospreys soaring over the misty lake was surreal! Great climbing on the rocky mountains surrounding the lakes is a bonus!

    Creedmore Lakes

This area was beautiful! Perfect for fishing and hiking, with three lakes and the poudre river closeby. The campgrounds were spaced nicely, but try to make it there earlier rather than later to get a site with a good view and pack light because it’s a quarter mile hike from the parking lot. You’ll also need a vehicle that can climb some rocks to get there, a car will have a tough time making it. Great area, I can’t wait to go back!
