Cabins near R.D. Bailey Lake provide access to over 50 miles of hiking trails and are situated in the Appalachian Mountains where elevations range from 1,000 to 3,000 feet. Most cabin rentals in this region experience distinct seasonal changes with fall foliage typically peaking in mid-October, while summer temperatures average 75-85°F. Winter cabin stays often require all-weather tires or chains during December through February.
What to do
Waterfall hiking: 30-minute drive from Twin Falls Resort State Park to view both falls on a moderate 2.5-mile loop trail. "This park has surprised us every single day. They have an abundance of trails with varying difficultly levels. We were here for almost a week and had the time only to get in about half of them. The Cliffside Trail is an absolute must!"
Fishing for stocked trout: Lake Stephens Campground maintains a stocked pond near cabin areas with trout in spring, bass in summer. WV fishing license required, available at camp store for $19/day. "The roads and views of the lake are beautiful. I recommend this campground."
Wildlife observation: Visit the small wildlife center at Chief Logan State Park where bears, bobcats and raptors can be viewed for a $2 donation. "There is a wildlife exhibit, a lodge, a pool, a theatre, and a museum all close together." Recent elk reintroduction programs have brought nearly 100 elk to the surrounding region.
What campers like
Spacious cabins with privacy: Backwoods Camping & RV Park cabins offer more secluded options than many area alternatives. "The staff was awesome. They were kind and helpful. We tent camped and there were only a couple RVs in the park so it was quiet besides the motorcycles and RVs up and down the main road."
Clean facilities: Bath houses at most cabin locations receive daily maintenance. "The bathhouse has heated, clean showers (score!). Digging this campground because it's open year round and the hiking trails are plentiful," notes a visitor at Mash Fork Campground.
Trail access directly from sites: Multiple cabin locations feature direct trail connections. "The site we use exclusively has a river running behind it and the sounds lull you to sleep any time of day! There is a general store that has just about anything you'd need in a pinch to get by."
What you should know
Reservation planning: Most cabin facilities require advance booking, with popular weekends filling 3-6 months ahead. Little Beaver State Park requires full payment at booking. "We just used this park for a night stop over on our return trip from SC. Beautiful park. Had water and electric, fairly level gravel sites."
Seasonal closures: Several access roads close during winter months, including Tomblin Drive at Chief Logan State Park. Bathroom facilities at smaller parks often close from November through March. "We were told there was one open bathroom however it was not made clear this was 1-2 miles away which was not exactly convenient."
Supply logistics: Most cabin areas require a 30-45 minute drive to reach grocery stores or pharmacies. Camp stores stock essentials but at premium prices. Plan comprehensive shopping before arrival. "The campground is 30 minutes away from a Walmart or a grocery store."
Tips for camping with families
Pool and water options: Breaks Interstate Park maintains a water park open late May through early September, with water slides for children aged 5-12. "There is a pool and waterpark on site, and a gift shop and camp store. White tail deer are frequent, and very tame."
Playground availability: Several cabin locations feature updated playgrounds with separate areas for younger and older children. "The common area in the middle has a playground, restroom/showers, vending machines and some field area to play."
Wildlife education programs: Seasonal ranger programs at multiple parks offer junior ranger activities. "We didn't get to try the Chief Logan swimming pool, but it looked amazing with a giant slide, high dive and kiddie pool. There's also a stocked fishing pond in this park."
Tips from RVers
Site leveling challenges: Cabin travelers using RVs should request sites with minimum 5% grade. "Many sites looked like it may take some work to get level. We were in site 20 with a 23 ft TT and got level fairly easily but a longer rig may have difficulty in that site."
Utility connections: Hilltop Escape LLC provides water and electric hookups plus additional parking for trailers. "Rv sites are large and easy access to back into your site. Fire pits and picnic tables. Restaurant right next door."
Cell service variability: Verizon service remains strongest throughout the area, while AT&T coverage varies significantly by location. "We had a great time all weekend with hiking, picnics, campfires and ghost hunting."
