Fishing draws many visitors to Spruce Knob Lake Campground first, and the lake delivers. Stocked with trout several times a year, the water sits less than a mile from the campsites and includes a boat dock and a wheelchair-accessible fishing pier. Electric motors only; no swimming. Kayakers can paddle the small lake, and the surrounding Monongahela National Forest holds more than 60 miles of trails, including the Big Bend River Trail accessible directly from the campground. The 8-mile hike east to Spruce Knob, the highest point in West Virginia at 4,863 feet, is a serious undertaking, but the summit is also reachable by gravel road, where a two-story observation tower gives 180-degree views of the surrounding ridgelines.
The 45 sites here are large and well-spaced, with dense undergrowth providing natural separation between neighbors. Sites 31 through 41 are walk-in tent sites that reviewers consistently flag for extra privacy. Each site has a fire ring and picnic table, and firewood is available for purchase from the camp manager on site. Vault toilets are on-site and, by multiple accounts, kept in reasonable condition. No showers, no electrical hookups. As Jenna R. puts it, "after quiet hours start it's totally silent."
Cell service is nonexistent at the campground. Download maps and weather forecasts before leaving the highway. The drive in combines narrow paved and unpaved roads with blind curves, and the final stretch on Forest Road 112 runs roughly 13.5 miles from the county road turnoff. RVs are limited to 30 feet. The closest resupply point is well over an hour away, so arrive with everything you need.
Water is available via a solar-powered pump house, though the campground notes it is in limited supply, and some reviewers have been advised to boil before drinking. Bring your own water as a backup. The area sits among some of the darkest skies in the eastern United States, making it a draw for stargazers and astrophotographers, though cloud cover and mountain weather can be unpredictable. Nearby dispersed options like Spruce Knob Dispersed — Monongahela NF and Gandy Creek Dispersed Camping suit campers who want more flexibility. The campground is open from mid-April through early October; reservations are available and worth booking ahead for holiday weekends.
