About

Mt. Baker-Snoqualmie National Forest

Overview

This campground is located along the Middle Fork of the scenic Snoqualmie River in Mt. Baker-Snoqualmie National Forest. Beneath a canopy of towering Douglas fir, cedar and Western hemlock, and located near several hiking trails within a short driving distance, this campground is a perfect site for both individual and small group camping excursions.

Recreation

In addition to being a prime location for hiking, fishing, horseback riding and picnicking in summer and early fall, Middle Fork offers excellent skiing and snowshoeing in the winter months. Approximately 1,500 miles of trails throughout the area can entice any hiker to get outdoors. From smooth paths meandering through deep quiet forests to challenging ascents up boulder-studded mountains, opportunities abound for every skill level. The popular Middle Fork Trail is a 3 mile trail offering visitors a glimpse into the area's diversity. The trail begins by crossing the Middle Fork of the Snoqualmie River via the Gateway Bridge, then turns upstream and meanders between the river and overhanging cliffs, offering sweeping views of nearby peaks. After climbing away from the river and passing under Stegosaurus Butte, a granite ridge towering over the valley at over 1,000 feet, the trail follows an old logging railroad grade used by pioneers and finally descends back to river level. The Middle Fork Snoqualmie Trail is also used by bicycles and horseback riders. Mountain bikes are allowed on the trail on odd- numbered days of the week. A Recreation Pass is required for each vehicle parked at the trailhead.

Natural Features

Hemmed in by several designated wilderness areas, Mt. Baker-Snoqualmie National Forest showcases rugged peaks, sparkling alpine lakes and old-growth forests. On a clear day visitors will see Mt. Baker, the most prominent feature of the Mt. Baker Wilderness Area. Rising to an elevation of 10,781 feet, the active volcano from which the forest takes its name is perpetually snow-capped and mantled with an extensive network of creeping glaciers. Mt. Baker's summit, Grant Peak, is actually a 1,300-foot-deep mound of ice, which hides a massive volcanic crater. Wildlife in the area include mountain goats, coyotes, pine marten and a variety of migratory birds and native fish.

Nearby Attractions

The Verlot Public Service Center, near the South Fork Stillaguamish River, was built by the Civilian Conservation Corps from 1933 to 1942. Verlot`s handsome buildings reflect the architectural style and fine craftsmanship of that era and are listed on the National Register of Historic Places. Visitors enjoy the North Cascades and Mt. Rainer National Parks, where interpretive programs and exhibits offer education about the diverse landscape and history of the area.

Very clean site with good day hikes and river fishing in the area

Very clean campground with very nice tent pads.  The bathrooms were spotless.  A lot of great activities in the area: several trails

The only reason I gave 4 stars instead of 5 starts is because this campground is a little less than 1.5 hours from Seattle so you can sometimes get some "amateurs" from the city who have poor campsite etiquette.  We were a couple sites down from one of two group sites and they were pretty noisy.

Sites 8, 9, and 16 as the most secluded, especially site 9.

Two thumbs up

I stayed here for three nights in site 11, which is very private and spacious. The vault toilet was very clean. There was a small black bear in my campsite one morning, but he was gathering berries and did not bother me or my belongings.

River !

Dispersed camping along the road to Snoqualmie Lake Trailhead. Nice river access, some of the spots are a bit exposed but some are further back from the road, buggy but fun!

No facilities so make sure to leave no trace :)

Quiet & Spacious

We had an amazing time here. The campground was quiet, not too crowded (Sunday - Tuesday) and so close to many trails. A quick walk to the river was a nice way to finish the day. We stayed in 17 and although it was near a road, it was private and you could not hear any road noise after the first hour or so. Restrooms were well maintained.

Note: Water is currently unavailable.

I’d come back.

Short Trip from Seattle

Loved our weekend at Middle Fork!

We had one of the group campsites, and very easily fit 9 people. Toilets were very well maintained and the host was selling firewood.

The river is only a five minute walk away, and we spent most of one day there. I was very surprised by how quiet it was for only being an hour outside of Seattle. The campground also had access to the CCC trail.

The water pump was broken when we were there, so had to pack in all of our water.

Great !

We (family of 4) stayed here for two nights. Our 4 & 7 year old had a great time hiking the easy trails, fishing, exploring and chatting with other campers. Very close (1hr) to Seattle, but far enough to forget the city. Spaces were spread well, not cramped together. C.C.C. Trail access off the campground, fishing in Taylor or Snoqualmie. Great views of peaks, waterfalls, and for all-day hikes it’s a great start point to various alpine lakes. We will come back when we can!

Dispersed camping on the Middle Fork Snoqualmie River

There are several pullout towards the end of the Middle Fork Road that offer access to the river and dispersed tent campsites. These are in National Forest Land NOT in DNR land where dispersed camping has different regulations.

Great views of the river and the mountains above. No facilities and no cell-reception.

Great Reserveable Campground 1 Hour East of Seattle

Spent one night here with a group. With so many campgrounds, I expected it to be very loud. It was not.

Camp hosts were super nice and selling wood on-site.

Pit toilets were surprisingly clean.

We stayed at campsite 2.

River a quarter mile walk away.

Middlefork- pretty place close to Seattle

Do not believe the cautions about the worst road in Washington; there road is paved and beautiful.

I love this area and would have given 5 stars but for two things. The website says water is available - the water pump worked once in three days. I only saw one set of restrooms (vault) they were... unusable.

Maybe I will try again later in the season, when the summer campers put their tents away.

Space 26 was amazing. berries everywhere.

We enjoyed our stay at the middle fork camp ground. We stayed there to be close to the mailbox trail head. There were so many berries around the camp and we could literally sit in camp and pick blue berries. We did get a bit of rain and had to put tarps up. The trees close to camp made it very easy to do so. The camp was very clean. Felt very safe about leaving our gear in camp. I would very much so recommend this location.

Questival Camp Night!

As part of Questival's Seattle OktoberQuest, team #Kynanandalidontdocoolthing spent a wonderfully frigid night right outside the Middle Fork campground. The roads leading into the campground are superb, Pratt river is pristine, and the other nature users friendly. Thank you to the Park Service, WTA, and all else that maintain a phenomenal campground!

Busy night!

Campground was PACKED when we got there as we got a late start. However the campground was kept very clean and was well maintained.

The riads ads leading in from I90 were passable but confusing with "Road Closed" signage when the road wasn't actually closed...
