Fort Casey Historical State Park sits on the western edge of Whidbey Island, where the Coupeville-Port Townsend ferry terminal sits close enough that campers can watch vessels come and go from their sites. The campground operates as a single open loop with gravel, level sites, each equipped with a fire pit and picnic table. Sites accommodate RVs up to 70 feet, with electric hookups available, and the layout is wide open with minimal screening between neighbors. This is not a wooded, shaded campground. What it provides instead is direct proximity to Puget Sound, with sightlines toward the Cascades and the Olympic Range.
The trade-off for that open-water exposure is a near-total lack of privacy. Multiple reviewers flag this consistently: you are in an exposed coastal setting, not a forested one. There is also an active Naval Air Station in Oak Harbor nearby, and jet traffic can be loud and frequent depending on the day. As Judy T. noted after one stay, "at least they don't break the sound barrier," though she reported headaches and upset dogs during a two-hour exercise session. Campers in solid RVs report less impact than those in lighter rigs or tents.
Bathrooms and showers are consistently described as well-maintained and clean. The shower facilities are separated from the restrooms, and reviewers across multiple years note the campground is kept in good order. The Fort Casey Inn sits nearby for those who want a different base. The fort itself is a short walk from the sites, with concrete bunkers and a lighthouse that offers tours on select days. Kite flying, beach combing, and cycling the paved loop around the campground are common activities, and the ferry provides a straightforward day trip to Port Townsend.
In winter, water spigots at individual sites are shut off due to frost, though a pump spigot near the bathrooms remains operational. Reservations are now required year-round, including for standard sites without hookups. Nightly rates run from $12 to $51 depending on site type and season. For campers exploring places to camp around Coupeville, this site fills up quickly on weekends and holidays, so booking well in advance is practical advice regardless of the season.
