FR 090 - dispersed camping

FR 090 provides free dispersed camping on designated numbered sites less than a mile from Bryce Canyon National Park's entrance. The US Forest Service maintains approximately 20 marked spots along this forest road, each offering several acres of space with established fire rings and level parking areas suitable for everything from passenger cars to small RVs.

Ponderosa pines and other conifers shade most sites, creating natural boundaries between camping areas. "Very private and lots of fire wood," notes Hannah N. about the tree cover and abundant deadfall. Sites are numbered sequentially, with the first seven generally easier to access for larger rigs, while those further in require more careful navigation on increasingly rutted roads.

The proximity to Bryce Canyon makes this area popular with national park visitors seeking free overnight options. Weekend arrivals after 4 PM often find limited availability, particularly during peak seasons when memorial day and summer crowds fill sites quickly. "Beautifully shaded open sites," describes Jeff P., who observed steady van traffic arriving by evening on Friday visits.

Road conditions vary significantly by weather and season. Small SUVs and higher clearance vehicles navigate the route without difficulty, though passenger cars require careful driving around ruts and rocks. Recent rain can worsen conditions, making the furthest sites challenging to reach. The area connects to other dispersed options including Dave's Hollow Designated Camping and additional dispersed sites around Dixie National Forest.

Arrive by mid-afternoon during busy periods to secure preferred sites, and bring a shovel for fire safety in the dry forest environment.

Multiple campers commented on spacious, private sites in a beautiful forest setting just minutes from Bryce Canyon entrance, all completely free. Road conditions can be challenging in wet weather, and weekend spots fill quickly despite numerous options available.

Close to Bryce yet so peacefully remote

FYI—This FR-90 posting is in the same area/is connected to Dave’s Hollow.

Literally right next to the entrance of the national park!

Magical area, very secluded, sites are spaced well apart, and roads aren’t too bad, though we had a high clearance vehicle.

Recommend parking in an open spot and walking around (it goes on for quite a bit!) so you can pick the site that speaks to you most. :)

Highly recommend!

Hidden gem near Bryce Canyon

Perfect location minutes from Bryce Canyon NP. Some ruts on the road coming in but nothing our van couldn’t handle. Sites are flat, spread out, and have fire pits. 10/10.

I loved this place! It was relatively quiet during our stay. Even in some rain the road was passable and we found some cool agates. Fire pit and flat where we camped. Perfect for RV

Not great for Rv

The road is terrible the further you drive in. We have a 24 ft Rv and thought we were going to tip over at numerous spots. The sites are great but are spread very far apart. If you can get into sites 1 to 7 it may be ok.

Great Spot!! Does fill app

This was a great spot!! Literally 5 minutes outside of Bryce Canyon National Park. But beware if you come late these spots do fill up. We got here at around 11am and set up before doing the park. Had we not we would not have gotten a spot so keep that in mind. Sites are spaced out and we had a large level one for our tent. Great stay.

Lovely!

Lots if dispersed options and not too close to anyone and only 6 minutes from the Bryce Canyon entrance. We snagged a really flat site too, perfect for tent camping. And the stars! My oh my, I swear the Milky Way was glowing!

Pretty, easy spot (weekday)

Pulled up around 4pm on a Monday and there were only a couple people, lots of empty space. Camp spots are marked clearly and have fire circles. The “road” is a bit bumpy but nothing a regular suv/truck/van can’t handle!

Great dispersed camping in a designated area

Dave’s Hollow Designated Camping has quite a few sites but seems to fill up quickly since it’s just outside of Bryce Canyon NP. There are designated campsites (see attached map).

Followed directions for Dave’s Hollow, found site #3 which is beautiful, and large and level. Based on previous ruts, it might be miserable in the rain. Great solar gain for such a nice wooded spot.

20 sites mostly unoccupied - no traffic until 5P Friday

Great spot.
Close to Bryce Canyon Entrance I’d guess 20 sites from Maps. Passed 10 to get to ours. 2 were occupied 8 open at 3P on a Friday. Around 5:30-6P vans started rolling by us. I’d say get here by 4P for a guaranteed spot on the weekend.

Beautifully shaded open sites. About 3-5acres/site.

Just writing this looking as cars pass. Definitely get here by 5P

Amazing that this is free!

Wide open sandy areas in a beautiful forest right outside of town and the park entrance. Can’t believe these are free. No amenities whatsoever. Still had a little cell service with Verizon. I didn’t end up getting to camp though because it ended up snowing a few enriches and all I have is a cheap little tent. I went in mid April and it was predicted to be 17° that night so not many people but I imagine in summer this fills up crazy fast and would try to get there midday to find a place.

The area was very easy to find and very quiet. I arrived as sunset and only saw one camper. I know it is the end of the season, but other places right now are packed.

Make sure you camp in a designated spot, marked with posts and numbers.

Great spot outside of Bryce!!!

We rented a van from Escape camper vans and this spot of easy to find and get to! We saw a lot of people with campers and vans. We kept driving until site 10 which was the first one that was empty at about an hour before sunset. Very private and lots of fire wood! Right outside of Bryce NP. As we left early in the morning people were pulled off the side of the rode. Looked like they were just looking for a place to park overnight.

Frequently Asked Questions

Where can I find dispersed camping near Bryce Canyon?

FR 090 offers excellent dispersed camping options extremely close to Bryce Canyon National Park. Located just minutes from the park entrance (less than a mile in some spots), this Forest Road provides numerous designated camping sites throughout Dixie National Forest. The sites are spread out along a dirt road, offering privacy while still being incredibly convenient for park access. Some campers have found beautiful spots in meadows and among pine trees. Despite being so close to the park, the camping experience feels secluded and peaceful.

What are the rules for dispersed camping in Dixie National Forest near Bryce Canyon?

At FR 090, you must camp only in the designated sites, which are clearly marked along the road. This differs from typical dispersed camping where you might choose any spot. Sites are numbered and organized, making them easy to identify. Campfires are permitted in established fire rings found at most sites. The area is primitive with no facilities or hookups. While camping is free, visitors should follow standard Leave No Trace principles, pack out all trash, and keep noise to a minimum. Respect site boundaries and avoid creating new campsites.

What is the best time of year for dispersed camping around Bryce Canyon?

Late spring through early fall is ideal for dispersed camping at FR 090, with summer being the most popular season. The area can get very cold, especially at night, due to the high elevation. Spring and fall offer fewer crowds but cooler temperatures. Summer provides the most comfortable weather, though sites fill up quickly, particularly on holiday weekends. Be prepared for potential weather challenges - the dirt road can become muddy and difficult after rain. Winter camping is possible but not recommended due to extremely cold temperatures and potential access issues.
