Shaded by old-growth forest and set directly on the northwest shore of Lake McDonald, Fish Creek Campground runs across four loops (A through D) with sites ranging from lakeside pulls to tighter interior spots tucked among trees. The campground is large, holding more than 200 sites, and fills quickly through the summer. Reservations are strongly recommended, and lakeside sites in particular go early. Perimeter sites tend to be more spacious; interior ones run closer together, and some sites in loops C and D amount to little more than a driveway with a picnic table and fire ring.
Loop A is the only loop with showers, which are free for registered campers but require a walk from C and D loops since parking near the shower building is not available. Sites in loop C tend to attract tent campers and those in smaller rigs, since larger vehicles are restricted there, which keeps generator noise down. The terrain in C is hilly, and many pull-throughs sit on a slope, so van and truck campers should come prepared to level. The ground throughout the campground is notably hard, and stakes can be difficult to drive in, especially on tent pads. "Dishwater must be dumped at restroom facility," notes Celina M., a standard bear-country requirement in effect across the campground.
Lake access is a genuine draw. A short trail between sites 19 and 21 in loop A leads to a staircase down to the water, where swimming is possible. Apgar Campground sits about 1.6 miles south and offers an alternative base with a similar setup. Cell service with most carriers is limited or nonexistent within the campground itself, though Verizon and Sprint users have reported sporadic signal near the Apgar visitor center. Firewood is not sold at Fish Creek but is available in Apgar Village, which also has a small grocery, ice cream, and boat rentals.
Apgar Group Sites are nearby for larger parties. Campers planning to drive Going-to-the-Sun Road should note that a campground reservation does not include road access during timed-entry hours between 6 a.m. and 3 p.m., and separate vehicle passes must be obtained in advance. Bears, both black and grizzly, are active in the area; food and scented items must be stored in a hard-sided vehicle or bear box at all times. "Be bear prepared," Rod D. cautions, noting grizzly encounters on nearby trails. The campground runs from June 1 through early September, with some facilities not yet operational at the very start of the season.
Fish Creek suits campers who want direct water access and a forested setting within Glacier National Park, and who are prepared for a busy, well-used campground rather than a remote one.
