Piñon pines dot the ridge above Trinidad Lake, providing scattered shade and privacy between campsites at this elevated Colorado Parks & Wildlife campground. The location puts campers roughly 15 minutes from water access, requiring either a hike down steep trails or a drive to other lake areas. Most sites feature gravel pads and electric hookups, with full hookup options concentrated near the entrance.
Lawrence P. notes "several trails to hike and wonderful views to see as well," while the ridge setting delivers lake and mountain vistas from many outer loop sites. The campground maintains a family-friendly atmosphere with a playground and archery range. Wildlife sightings include deer and rabbits moving through the piñon forest. Sites accommodate RVs up to 38 feet, though some are better suited for shorter rigs.
Water spigots are distributed throughout rather than at individual sites, requiring hoses for tank filling. The facility building houses clean restrooms, coin-operated showers, and laundry with three washers and dryers. During winter months, water hookups shut down and the main restroom facility closes, leaving smaller restrooms on the east side accessible. The campground stays open year-round with electricity functioning in cold weather.
Gravel roads provide good access in most conditions, and the location works well as a base for exploring nearby Fishers Peak State Park. Allison B. observes that "piñon trees throughout offer some privacy but not much shade," making site selection important during hot summer months. The ridge can experience high winds due to its exposed hilltop position.
Campers wanting direct water access might prefer South Shore - Trinidad Lake State Park, located closer to the lake's edge.
