Winter temperatures typically range from 35-60°F, making year-round camping possible with proper preparation.
What to do
Hiking trails for all abilities: Tyler State Park offers miles of trails suitable for different skill levels. "I tent camped and there were alot of trails, alot of activities to do and the water was alittle on the chilly side but was still nice!" shares Wesley D.
Fishing and dock access: Lake access points allow for various angling opportunities. "The lake is perfect for kayaking and fishing from one of several docks. Tranquil, peaceful, clean and easy access from I-20 N. Of Tyler," notes Dianne C. about her experience at Tyler State Park.
Water activities and rentals: Several parks offer boat, kayak, and paddleboard rentals. At Lake Holbrook Park - South, you can enjoy "Sandy lake, oaks, bathroom, dock, ramp, bathroom, free camp," according to Julie G.
What campers like
Shaded sites with full hookups: Concrete pads make setup easier for RVs and other camping vehicles. "The sites are all large and shaded with a picnic table and a fire pit. Our site was also a full hookup site as was the site of our friends that also came with us," reports Angela R. about Big Tex Campgrounds.
Clean facilities: Campers consistently mention well-maintained bathrooms and showers. At Mill Creek Ranch RV & Cottage Resort, "Bathhouse is very clean. A lot to do here. Wish we could have stayed longer! My favorite place so far!" shares Kelly F.
Waterfront views: Many sites offer direct lake access or views. "We stopped for one night on a holiday weekend but wish we had had more time. Although the sites were close together, they all had concrete pads, full hookups, were level, and had picnic tables. Great view of Lake Tyler," writes kathy H. about The Boulders at Lake Tyler.
What you should know
Reservation timing: Popular parks fill quickly, especially during peak seasons. "Great little lake to fish, kayak, swim and hike! Hard to get reservations because it is so popular! If you get reservations it's kinda like winning the lottery," explains Tammie L. about Tyler State Park.
Site selection considerations: Some parks may reassign your reserved spot upon arrival. "The only con is they will move you. I don't care if you picked that spot out for a specific reason (as I did) when booking, it likely won't be your spot when you check in," warns Angela R. about Big Tex Campgrounds.
Varying amenities between parks: Not all parks offer full hookups or shower facilities. "The only reason I didn't give it five stars is the price and not having sewer. There are a lot of cute amenities but everything costs extra," notes Natalie S. about The Boulders at Lake Tyler.
Tips for camping with families
Playground access: Several parks feature well-maintained play areas. "My family and I enjoy the trails and lake at this park. The playground is one of the best Ive seen at the state parks we've been to! We love our SP so close to home!" shares Becca H. about Tyler State Park.
Kid-friendly water activities: Look for parks with shallow swimming areas and rentals. "The lake was perfect and had a nice beach. We were able to rent kayaks and paddle boats. The hiking is not the greatest but it was easy enough for my toddler," says Sarah J. about Tyler State Park.
Yurt camping options for families: Yurts provide comfortable family accommodations near Lindale, Texas. Music Springs offers unique lodging options including a teepee that's great for families. "Has a variety of unique lodging, as well as tent sites. Owners are attentive and accommodating. I recommended the teepee," suggests Blake M.
Tips from RVers
Level concrete pads: Many parks feature concrete pads that simplify setup. "Very clear grounds and bathrooms. All concrete pads and level. This is a large park and staffed will. Cost is a bit high at $50.00 a night but I like the campground," notes Thomas L. about Mill Creek Ranch RV & Cottage Resort.
Big rig accessibility: Some parks accommodate larger RVs with properly sized sites. "We stayed one night in our RV in this spacious RV resort. My kids had fun fishing and playing on the playground and LOVED that we could rent a golf cart. The pad for the RV was level, with a nice amount of space between sites," shares Rebecca H. about Mill Creek Ranch.
Community amenities for extended stays: When yurt camping near Lindale, Texas, access to shared facilities makes longer stays more comfortable. "The bathrooms and shower are clean, there's a community kitchen that has a microwave, coffee maker, and refrigerator. The whole place is decorated very nicely," writes Karen M. about Music Springs.
