Big Creek Resort, Marina, & Campground

One of my favorite local campgrounds

I like this park because it's close to home. It's got a good space between sites and is broken into 3 or 4 areas so you're not just piled in like sardines. You can being 4-wheeled vehicles that have a steering wheel. No sewer hookups, but there is a dump station. Unfortunately, subsequent major floods have caused them to lose much of the tree cover. It's great when camping in groups though, which we do quite often. All sites have views of the lake. They have a really good fireworks display on 4th of July.

      Type of Park: Private-owned

Grass site. No rock or concrete base

👍🏻 Pros: No trees to avoid

Good area for camping in groups

Close to good swimming areas and store

      Close to boat ramp

👎🏻 Cons: Split-level site- table is down a slight hill from parking area. No shade

Across from the cabins on stilts, lake view is a little blocked

Cabins are being refurbished and the equipment and materials are stacked near the site(and some construction noise)

No grill or fire ring at this site

📝 Park Notes: Gates closed and locked from midnight to 6 am on weekends.

Closed at 10 pm on week days.

Can bring golf carts, ATV's(machines with steering wheels, not handle bars)

Dump Station- a little hard to get to for big rigs. Also hard to leave the park from there. You may have to go back into the park to turn around.

Stephen F. Austin State Park Campground

      Pleasant Texas State Park

We had a really nice relaxing stay at Stephen F Austin State Park near San Filepe, Texas. Great little state park easily accessed from I-10. The 38 RV sites are all asphalt pad pull throughs with 30/15 amp electric, water and sewer complete with concrete pad for table, fire pit, lantern and all well spaced for plenty of privacy...big rig friendly. They have an additional 39 tent only sites with water and 25 primitive. Screened shelters are reservable for tent camping with 20 amp electric and water plus one rustic cabin with amenities. There is a$5 daily entrance fee in addition to camping fees. The bathhouse facilities are brand new. It's a small park but they do have five miles of trails for hiking/biking with views of the Brazos River. We enjoyed the wildlife; deer strolling in the campground every morning and evening, birds, rabbits, frogs, turtles, a bobcat and numerous owls. They have a Nature Center; however it was not open during our visit. The park office has a small store with sundries and park souvenirs. The nearby San Felipe de Austin State Historic Site tells the story of early settlers to Texas and is worth a visit. We made a run to the nearby town of Sealy to do a much needed laundry stop...small community with grocery, dining and fuel to meet most needs. Lake Somerville State Park Birch Creek Unit Campground

Nice park with green space between sites

      • Water

      • 20/30 amp(had 50 amp outlet, but only 20& 30 breakers)

      • Grill

      • Fire Ring with adjustable height grate

      • Picnic Table

      • Site Pad: asphalt. Site was just long enough for my 24' camper and my truck and not much room between.

      👍🏻 Pros:

      • Near the water with a trail to get there

      • Green space between the site and neighbors

      • Good kayaking area

      👎🏻 Cons:

      • The spot is tight getting in. My 10' high camper had low hanging branches on it(but they were soft, not stiff). Lots of vines/shrubs across from the site, so no extra room there.

      📝 Park Notes:

      • Park does not have a gate, so it doesn't close

      • Dump Station for each camping loop

      • Restrooms/ Bath House

      • Boat ramp

      • Fishing jetty (pier is closed)

      • This campground is better for winter camping. Great buffer from wind and neighbors. Only a handful of sites have direct access to the water.

      • Lots of trails

      • There are Munzees and Geocaches here

      • Group pavilion/kitchen available

      • 2 group shelters available

🐦 Wildlife:• Birds: Shore birds, egrets, herons, cardinals, mockingbirds

      • Deer

      • Raccoons(I saw their tracks, but not the critters)

More info an video at https://www.denisevajdak.com/2021/08/my-birthday-weekend-2021.html

Site 23 was better (stayed in this one twice). Wider, nice view of lake. Not very long, but easier to get into.

Stephen F. Austin State Park Campground

      Okay State Park

Got to the park around 2:00 PM and pulled up to the stop sign in the second lane to use the bathroom and check in. Found out from a not-so-kind park ranger that we could not park and loiter at the front of the office building. There was a sign to that effect that we missed as most state parks have you park in front of the check in office and there wasn't really anywhere else to park with our 39' fifth wheel in tow. Check in was alright, but there was confusion concerning our Texas State Park passes for Disabled Veterans, which we both received a few years ago at another Texas State Park. For our stay here, only one person's pass was accepted and that pass was good for 1.5 people. Another employee thought we should each be covered with our passes and tried to add the additional pass in the system, but since we were camping, versus day use in a car, we could only use one. So, we had to pay$7.50 park pass for our 3 nites stay. Then she had to show the young man checking us in the rule book that showed we were entitled to the pass even though we were non-residents. This is the first time our passes weren't accepted to cover us both. After that we headed to pull through site 21 with FHUs but only 30 AMP. The wood posts and trees in this site determine how/where you park your rig. We needed our 15’ sewer hose and used a donut as there’s no screw in for the sewer connection. Water pressure was okay at around 40 psi. We got quite a few OTA channels and 3 bars on Verizon having no problem with internet and making calls using our MiFi. Most of the sites here are very spacious and well laid out so your neighbors are not close to you. Site 21 is one of the most spacious and we had no problem fitting our 39’ 5th wheel and F-450 on the pad. The restrooms/shower house in the RV area was clean and there was ice for sale at that location. What we really enjoyed about this park was the abundant hiking trails that interweave with each other. We thought the golf course in the park would be open, but it had been sold to a private owner and would hopefully open to the public in a month or so. The camp hosts were very friendly and helpful. Overall, we enjoyed our 3 night’s stay.

      Nice, Kind of Pricy

We got a spot here for one night with no reservations on a Thursday in late March, but all the spots were booked for the weekend. With taxes and fees the price came to $38 for a night at a FHU site.

All sites are pull through / bump out style. Our spot (#39) wasn't level. Spots come with a picnic table and fire pit.

Firewood and ice for sale here at campground.

Free showers are really nice and clean, look pretty new. Water never got hot for me though.

Friendly rangers at the office when we checked in, and they had lots of cute things to buy at the gift shop.

      Dumpsters and aluminum can recycling.

Ok cell reception, not many bars but both the att and Verizon phone worked fine. We heard the rangers tell other campers that there is free wifi at the campground but we didn't see it pop up when we looked for it.

Lots of nice short hiking trails here throughout the park.

      Yegua Creek Campground

Nice park with views of sunrise and sunset

      • Water

      • 20/30/50 amp

      • Grill on a swivel so you can turn it in high winds

      • Fire Ring with flip-over grate

      • Metal mesh Picnic Table. Table is in full sun in early-mid afternoon, but not for long. A canopy would help.

      • Site Pad: Crushed Granite and level. Very long site with extra room after the pad site

      👍🏻 Pros:

      • Nice view of the water toward Welch Park and the dam

      • You can get a good view of the sunset and sunrise

      • Close to the restrooms/shower

      • Wide view of the lake as it curves around the campground

      • Shade, but open areas so breeze can come through

👎🏻 Cons:• No sewer hookups at site

      📝 Park Notes:

      • Gates closed and locked from 10p to 6a(can get out, but not back in)

      • Dump Station

      • Restrooms/ Bath House(but had LOTS of tiny dead bugs piled up)

      • Most of this campground has a barrier wall, so only limited spots where you can access the water. One place in this loop and a bigger area(but busy) section on the other side of the main loop.

      • There are Munzees and Geocaches here and in the area

      • You can use your America the Beautiful Access Passes here. They sell them at the main entrance booth, but they were out of the Annual Passes.

      🐦 Wildlife:

      • Birds: Cardinals(not afraid to hang out on my site), Mockingbirds, Herons, Cranes, Shore birds, LBJ's(little brown jobbers), Chickadees

      • Deer

      Site Pad: Concrete

      👍🏻 Pros:

      • Very wide sites. Can park the tow vehicle next to the rig
      • Brand new- all new electric, water, sewer
      • Sites are level
      • No need for rugs and such

      👎🏻 Cons:

      • It's a big concrete parking lot with hookups- nothing special beyond that
      • The sites were wide, but there's only about a foot or so of space between sites
      • No picnic tables or grills
      • Grass only around the edges of the lot (Keep that in mind for pets)
      • Some spots around the edges had a tiny bit of shade

      📝 Park Notes:

Large, bright light poles and the lights are on all night, hard to tell when the sun is coming up and not just the lights. But no stumbling around in the dark.

It was nice being at The Western Club with friends for the ShuffleFest weekend event and not having to drive 45 minutes back and forth. The RV park is directly behind the Steakhouse& Dancehall.

It is a great spot to stay if you're going to the Western Club. It wouldn't be my first choice for a vacation destination though. It is right off the feeder road for Highway 6, but the road noise isn't terrible.

    Guide to Ledbetter

RV sites near Ledbetter, Texas accommodate diverse camping needs across three counties in Central Texas. The region sits within the Post Oak Savannah ecoregion characterized by rolling hills and sandy loam soils, with elevations ranging from 300 to 500 feet. Summer temperatures regularly exceed 90°F from June through September, while winters remain mild with occasional freezing temperatures at night.

    What to do

Fishing access: Thousand Trails Colorado River offers multiple fishing spots, including the Colorado River and two stocked ponds on the property. "We love it here. Right on the Colorado river plus two ponds to fish in. Lots of places to walk or ride your bikes," notes one camper.

Wildlife viewing: River Forest Haven provides excellent deer watching opportunities. "Super cool to get tucked into the woods. Some of the spots are secluded and others aren't," mentions a visitor who stayed for two nights in this wooded setting.

Tubing: River Forest Haven also offers river tubing options during warmer months. According to one camper, "The tubing is great for people with children who don't necessarily want to go tubing two to four hours... Very short route but water safety should be practiced as it is very deep in some areas."

Walking trails: Several campgrounds maintain nature paths for exercise. One visitor at Colorado Landing RV Park mentioned "walking trails by the pretty river" as a highlight of their stay, while another camper at Thousand Trails Colorado River appreciated the "lots of places to walk or ride your bikes."

    What campers like

Scenic river views: Many camping areas offer direct access to waterways. "This campground is one of the nicest Thousand Trails Collection campgrounds we have ever stayed at! They have large FHU sites with 30/50amp and beautiful views," reports one visitor to Thousand Trails Colorado River.

Shaded sites: Oak trees provide natural cooling at several campgrounds. One visitor to Whispering Oaks RV Park appreciated "beautiful live oaks, a manicured walking path among the oaks behind the property, and a nice garden with chickens and guinea fowl for entertainment."

Pet amenities: Dog parks are available at multiple locations. A visitor to Whispering Oaks RV Park mentioned "What a wonderful amenity with the automatic lights for after dark," while another camper noted the "two large dog parks" at Colorado Landing RV Park.

Clean facilities: Well-maintained restrooms rank high on camper satisfaction. According to a Flatonia RV Ranch visitor, "Bathroom is an odd layout with no doors separating stalls or toilet - curtains only. They were perfectly functional and clean though."

    What you should know

Site levelness varies: Come prepared with leveling blocks. At Flatonia RV Ranch, one camper noted, "Sites are gravel/rock with grassy areas adjacent. Not perfectly level, but we wiggled the trailer around a bit in the spot until we got close."

Weather considerations: Wind exposure affects some sites. At Colorado River RV Campground, a camper mentioned the newer section "has no mature trees or other wind block so it's windy a lot of the time."

Seasonal fluctuations: Book early during peak periods. Most parks in the Ledbetter area report higher occupancy from March through October, particularly on weekends and holidays.

River access limitations: Water entry points are restricted at some riverside campgrounds. A Colorado Landing RV Park camper noted, "Sites are about 70' long x 15' wide. Plenty of trees. The only thing I didn't like was that the river ran next to the campground but due to yearly heavy rainfalls, maintaining a canoe or kayak launch is impossible."

    Tips for camping with families

Playground quality varies: Check facility conditions before promising activities to children. One camper at Colorado River RV Campground reported disappointment: "I took my granddaughter to the playground and can't use it (old and broken)."

Swimming options: Look for campgrounds with pools during summer. Colorado River RV Campground provides a swimming pool, as noted by a visitor who listed amenities including "mini golf, pool, boat launch, pickleball, basketball, trails, etc."

Kid-friendly water activities: River Forest Haven offers shorter tubing routes suitable for children. "Very short route but water safety should be practiced as it is very deep in some areas," warns one visitor.

Wildlife education opportunities: Many campsites allow wildlife observation from your site. At Thousand Trails Colorado River, one camper mentioned, "There are also deer everywhere," providing natural entertainment for children.

    Tips from RVers

Site selection strategy: Request specific site sections for your needs. At Giddings RV Park, a camper observed that "concrete pads seem very level especially in the older portion the newer edition is a little more rolling hills."

Overnight accessibility: Several parks accommodate late arrivals along major routes. Whispering Oaks RV Park receives praise for its "convenient location right off I-10" that "makes it an obvious choice" for travelers.

Hookup configurations: Check electrical service capabilities before booking. Most parks near Ledbetter offer 50-amp service, but availability varies by site section and park.

Cell connectivity: Coverage varies by location and carrier. One camper at Colorado River RV Campground reported, "AT&T reception is LTE and varies by location and time. I had 1 bar to 4 bars at the same spot throughout the day."

Extended stays: Some RV sites near Ledbetter accommodate longer-term visitors. At Flatonia RV Ranch, a camper noted "Many long termers, but they stayed to themselves. Plenty of room for big rigs."
