The recreation area features designated horse pens in the large camping area where riders can secure their animals overnight while enjoying primitive camping along Lake Travis. The terrain offers open areas for horses to move around, with most sites situated a short walk from water access. Sites 1-13 provide more privacy than others in the campground, though all offer enough room for small RVs plus tents alongside horse equipment. Campers reference The Dyrt for top tips on camping near Killeen, Texas.

Located approximately 90 minutes from Killeen, the recreation area connects to several riding trails that wind through the Texas Hill Country landscape. Horse owners can access multiple trail options directly from their campsites, with paths offering varying difficulty levels suitable for different riding experiences. The trails provide scenic views of Lake Travis and the surrounding countryside, making for memorable day rides. Water access points along the shore allow horses to cool off, though riders should be aware of potential underwater hazards. While the campground has minimal facilities with only porta-potties in the main camping area (permanent restrooms are located 3 miles away at the entrance), the trade-off is a peaceful, natural setting perfect for those seeking primitive horse camping experiences. Most horse campers bring their own portable corrals or high-line systems as the campground does not offer permanent stall structures.

Pace Bend Park - Lake Travis

One of my favorite spots in Texas

Pace Bend is one of my most favorite places to camp in Texas.

Not far from the old (and new!) Backyard (a great place to see live music in the live oak capital of Texas), Pace Bend is a quick drive away. A perfect spot to pitch a bunch of tents, jump off cliffs, swim and barbeque. Maybe 45 minutes from downtown Austin (without traffic).

I won't lie the cliff diving kinda freaks me out. Be careful is all I'm saying!

There are several primitive campsites throughout the park with picnic tables, grills and toilets. Additionally there are 20 RV hook-up type sites that offer running water, electricity, restrooms and showers.

      Shaffer Bend Recreation Area

      Weekend Trip

Shaffer Bend Rec. Area has a beautiful setting in the Texas Hill Country right off of Lake Travis. At the gate entrance you have wonderful landscape views. All of the camp sites are situated next to or a short walk to the water.

The camps are clean. Most are equipped with a picnic table and fire ring. In the large camp area, some have BBQ pits with a couple big communal grill/smoker. The same area has a horse pen as well if you're an equestrian enthusiast on top of a camper. It is a primitive campground. The large camp area has a couple port-a-poties. At the gate entrance there are men's and women's rooms with running water. That's about 3 miles from the camp sites. So, be prepared to dig holes, bring your own portable toilets, or hold it.

Considering you're on the lake, the water access is surprisingly limited. There are a few areas along the water you can walk in, but there's not a dock or boat access. I recommend sandals or water shoes since there's a fair amount of plant life along the shore. The same areas you can walk in would be good for kayaks though. The camp sites are situated along a narrow section of the lake. So, there would be plenty to explore.

      Shaffer Bend Recreation Area

      hot

the campsite is good for equestrians. if you're a kayaker you can put in here and travel down and take out elsewhere. the lower Colorado River Authority has plenty of places along the Colorado to facilitate this. we stayed here for 4 days before Memorial Day weekend and it was hot. there are no showers or bath houses. there are Porta-Johns located throughout the campground. Texas in summer can be unforgiving. Lake Travis is home to boaters and Jet skiers. there are fish if you're into that.

      Reynolds Creek

Needs improvement but a peaceful stay.

This park is located out in boonies and can be pretty difficult to find. Most people think they are lost trying to get to it, but if you follow North Speegleville road through all the cornfields you will eventually stumble upon it. Believe me, you're not going the wrong way.

Being lakefront property you would expect to see more water, however there is a lot of brush grown up around the lake and sites so it is hard to see. There are also limited places to get down to the water in the park.

There is a nice boat ramp and dock for fishing. It is also pet friendly and equestrian friendly. There is a nice little 1 mile hike were you can bird watch and view the lake Waco, it is very shaded and flat. Then there is a 20 mile hike/ equestrian trail that goes around Lacey point.

Bathrooms and showers need some work, but they do the job. There is no store at the campground, but there is a dollar general located in Speegleville about 4 minutes away. There are picnic tables at ever site along with a fire pit, and also a playground for kids.

The whole park is very secluded and away from street noise which is so lovely. Perfect place for viewing the stars over the water and listening to nature speak around you!

      Small RV and tent-dry camping

Relaxing and clean. Very windy, so no bugs! Dogs love running along water’s edge and jumping in. Horses ok too from the looks of it. Sites 1-13 closer together and more in site if each other but still ok. Great hiking and walking. Small RV plus tent for us.

      Heart of Texas Fair Complex

I've never actually Stayed, but the facilities are nice

These grounds are just for those participating in events at the center. Lots of equestrian and ag show events. In the last 10 years or so they have put a lot into improving the grounds and made them really nice. Though, to be fair, I have never had to stay over night on the grounds. Only visited.

      Wildflowers Ji

This is a great little place on Lake Travis. Going in the spring time is the best because of all the wildflowers. Trails are easy. Campsites are clean with a fire pit and a grill. There is easy access to the lake to go swim or paddle. Be mindful that Lake Travis is not a constant level lake and this is a narrow and shallow part of the lake. There is a chance of low water levels. Also it’s Texas and there is wildlife. We saw about a 5 ft rattlesnake. Overall a great place!

Pace Bend Park - Lake Travis

Pace Bend Park + Lake Travis

Pace Bend Park is conveniently located a short distance from the city of Austin and on the shores of Lake Travis. The park is managed by the Travis County Parks Department. The entrance fee is $10 per car and the campsites are all first come first served. There are almost always campsites available, but the best campsites do get taken early. On the east side of the park there is easy beach access to the lakeshore and water. On the west side of the park there are a number of coves. Access to the water is possible by scrambling over and down rocks to the waters edge. Many people cliff jump off the cove cliffs, but be sure to test the depth of the water before jumping. Many people get injured every year jumping off the cliffs. Some of the campsites have developed pads to set up your tent. Other campsites just have clearing to set up your tent. There are ample trees available for hammock hanging. Because the park is located so close to the city many people visit the park for day use. The day time crowd can be a bit overwhelming and loud at times. At night the atmosphere generally calms down a bit. Many of the campsites have picnic tables and some have grills. A few have fire rings for campfires, but the park is removing many of the rings. Depending on the time of the year and the dryness, there is often a county fire banned in the area and park. My favorite campsites are along the west side of the park and the coves (N. Gracey Cove).

    Guide to Killeen

Shaffer Bend Recreation Area offers equestrian-friendly camping with designated horse pens and primitive sites along Lake Travis. Located approximately 90 minutes from Killeen in the Texas Hill Country, this area features sandy beaches with direct water access points. Camping sites include basic amenities like fire rings and picnic tables with enough space for trailers and equipment.

    What to do

Trail riding: Horse camping areas at Pace Bend Park connect to trails that wind along cliff formations with views of Lake Travis. Campers note the terrain offers varied difficulty levels. "We stay at Pace Bend every time we go rock climbing in Austin. The campsites are private and there are always sites available. The campsites along the cliffs are beautiful at night," reports Katie B.

Fishing: Access points along the lake shore provide opportunities for catching bass and catfish. At Speegleville Park near Waco, sites are positioned for direct lake access. "Lake Waco may not be the cleanest or prettiest lake, but when it comes to fishing, you can bring in a good amount of catfish and have a fish-fry to make up for it," says Brittany S.

Swimming: Several horse-friendly campsites offer swimming spots where both horses and campers can cool off. "The water was beautiful and it was very quiet. We loved everything about this spot," writes Lauren Z. about lake access at Speegleville Park, which is approximately 45 miles from Killeen.

    What campers like

Privacy between sites: Horse campers appreciate the spacing between sites at Muleshoe Bend Recreation Area, allowing room for equipment without feeling crowded. "My favorite sites 27 for the privacy, followed by 24 because it's off the road and not close to other sites," Whitney L. reports. Equestrian sites typically offer more seclusion than standard tent sites.

Natural water features: The sandy beaches near horse camping areas provide convenient spots for horses to drink and cool off. "Great stay. The site we had was walking distance to the sandy beach of lake Travis. Great fishing and the sand carrier up so it's a soft bedding for the evening," notes Steve L. about camping at Shaffer Bend Recreation Area.

Affordable rates: Many equestrian campgrounds near Killeen maintain reasonable rates despite specialized facilities. "We used our discount card so it was only $13 a night," mentions Becky B. about her stay at Speegleville Park, which offers water and electric hookups along with spacious sites.

    What you should know

Varying amenity levels: Facilities at horse camps range from basic to more developed. Live Oak Ridge offers more amenities than primitive horse camping areas. "It had water/electric with a dump station. It had a picnic table and fire pit. It also has a laundry room near the entrance. There is a playground, restrooms, and showers," Nomadic L. explains.

Seasonal conditions: Summer temperatures regularly exceed 100°F, while spring brings wildflowers but also potential for storms. "Going in the spring time is the best because of all the wildflowers. Trails are easy. Campsites are clean with a fire pit and a grill," Candice C. notes about Shaffer Bend.

Wildlife awareness: Horse campers need to be alert for local wildlife. "It's Texas and there is wildlife. We saw about a 5 ft rattlesnake," Candice C. mentions about Shaffer Bend Recreation Area. Equestrian campers should keep horses secured overnight due to potential wildlife encounters.

    Tips for camping with families

Playground access: Several equestrian-friendly campgrounds include play areas for children. At Arkansas Bend, "There is a playground in the center of the park in a field of beautiful yellow flowers," notes olivia about Live Oak Ridge, which is approximately 25 miles from Killeen.

Clean facilities: Family-friendly horse camping sites maintain clean bathroom facilities. "Bathrooms are spacious and well kept," reports olivia about facilities at Live Oak Ridge, which makes longer stays with children more comfortable when camping with horses.

Level camping areas: Families with horse trailers and camping equipment appreciate well-maintained, level sites. "We were very surprised at how level our gravel campsite was. It made setup a breeze," Lauren Z. reports about Arkansas Bend, which accommodates both RV and tent campers.

    Tips from RVers

Site selection for horse trailers: RVers bringing horses recommend specific sites that can accommodate both RVs and horse trailers. "Sites that we really like with lots of shade 40, 41," suggests Dean H. about Live Oak Ridge, where sites can fit both living quarters and horse equipment.

Water access points: RVers with horses note the importance of water access for cooling animals after rides. "There are nature trails across the main road and access to Belton and their small but awesome riverwalk area," Cheryl D. reports about Williamson County Berry Springs Park and Preserve, where "lots and lots and lots of fields, walking trails" provide exercise space for horses according to Chris E.

Camp setup considerations: When bringing horses to campgrounds near Killeen, RVers recommend planning for both human and equine comfort. "Small RV plus tent for us," robin notes about their setup at Shaffer Bend Recreation Area, which allows for multiple accommodation types while camping with horses.
