Equestrian camping near Argyle, Texas provides access to diverse terrain spanning oak forests and open prairies. The LBJ National Grasslands covers over 20,000 acres of public land and contains multiple campgrounds suitable for both horse and conventional camping. Summer temperatures often exceed 95°F, making spring and fall the preferred seasons for extended trail rides and overnight stays.
What to do
Horse trail access: The LBJ Lyndon B Johnson National Grasslands offers extensive riding options beyond the main Tadra Point area. "We love this place! It's free and close to DFW. There's cattle roaming around and a lot of stocked ponds to fish in and some hiking through the different areas," notes camper Kristi B.
Fishing opportunities: Multiple stocked ponds throughout the grasslands provide fishing locations away from the main trails. "There are numerous equestrian trails with both open fields and wooded sections," with many riders bringing compact fishing gear for breaks along water features.
Wildlife viewing: Early morning and dusk offer the best wildlife spotting times at Ray Roberts Lake State Park Isle du Bois. "A gem of a getaway! Deer will approach your campsite and you're likely to see all kinds of wildlife," writes Tony C.
What campers like
Well-maintained facilities: Tadra Point Trailhead & Campground receives positive reviews for its upkeep despite primitive amenities. "Nicely maintained. The campsites here are pretty primitive. Seems like you can set up just about anywhere. There are two non flushing restroom. Plenty of poles for tying horses," reports Mesha P.
Spacious campsites: Horse campers appreciate the room for trailers and equipment at Ray Roberts Lake State Park Johnson Branch. "The sites are so well manicured and like the other reviews stated, they're cut in a way that gives you privacy. The sites are fairly close together but the grass makes it feel like you have your own little oasis," writes Joyce L.
Convenient location: Equestrian campers value proximity to Argyle while still feeling removed from urban areas. "Not far from Fort Worth, but feels miles away when you are there! Big beautiful lake you can enjoy and fish, large park and volleyball courts," notes Cheryl about Johnson Branch State Park.
What you should know
Water availability: At Pilot Knoll Park Campground, water is readily accessible, unlike some primitive sites. "Lots of large back in spots with 50/30 amp plugs, water hook ups, fire pit and picnic table. Many spots are have direct access to the lake to launch a kayak or SUP, boat launch in the day use area," shares Michael H.
Busy seasons: The grasslands see heaviest use during spring and fall weekends when weather conditions are mild. Summer heat can be intense on both horses and riders in exposed areas.
Equipment recommendations: Trail conditions vary significantly based on recent rainfall. Experienced riders suggest bringing shoes for horses during summer when ground can harden and become challenging.

Wildlife education: Morning rides often provide teaching opportunities with visible wildlife. "We had a great time. It was really busy but that's okay, we still enjoyed it," shares Jessica S. about Cedar Hill State Park.

Tips from RVers
Trailer parking: Loyd Park offers amenities that work well for horse trailers with living quarters. "All sites are paved, several are lake front, and the majority of them are well shaded. We camp here often - by ourselves, and with friends," reports Randy H.
Levelness of sites: RV campers with horse trailers note the importance of level sites for comfortable overnight stays. "Campsites are all level and great for the Big Rigs," shares Debbie T. about Loyd Park.
Hook-up availability: Most dedicated equestrian sites lack full hook-ups, so preparation for limited services is necessary. "We had to use the dump station. But apparently they are creating some full hookup site so we will be back," notes Cactus A.
