Schreiner Park in Junction City - PERMANENTLY CLOSED

Campers seeking riverside access can set up along the banks of the Llano River at this county-managed park that accommodates RVs up to 50 feet. The park operates as an informal overnight area where visitors can choose their own spots rather than designated campsites, with stays typically limited to three nights maximum.

The property features mature pecan trees that provide substantial shade, though campers should avoid parking directly underneath during windy conditions due to falling branches. Multiple fire pits, picnic tables, and grills are scattered throughout the grounds, along with a volleyball court, basketball court, and disc golf course. Water spigots are available, but the park lacks electrical hookups and dump facilities.

Hoyt, the city maintenance worker, regularly checks on overnight visitors and provides guidance on appropriate parking areas to avoid blocking park traffic. "The local traffic through the park is insane. At least a car a minute on the weekends," notes Courtney. Verizon and AT&T cell service receives consistently strong reviews from visitors.

Swimming and fishing opportunities exist at the river spillway area. The park sits within walking distance of Junction's main grocery store and gas station, with various fast food options near Interstate 10. For campers wanting full hookups, Junction City Park offers additional amenities across the river.

Campers regularly cited the spacious waterfront sites, helpful park maintenance staff, and good amenities at this free city park. Some noted heavy daytime traffic through the park, though nights remain peaceful.

Shady and the price is right - FREE!

Headed east from west this was a great stopover on the way to Davis Mountains. Quiet park, visited by locals and the city maintenance folks. It seems they keep their equipment on the property next to the park. Things are very quiet at night.

Lots of mature pecan trees which makes for great shade, but watch out for widow makers. No hookups, but the sites are mostly level and some are located with a view of the Llano river. The park to the south of the river is positioned to catch nice breezes. There were folks swimming near the spillway. I saw two water spigots in the park, but there is no electric or dump facilities. There’s a disc golf course and some spots have a covered picnic area. I had Verizon cell service.

Nice, Safe, and Clean

Great park! We pulled in late at night on a weekday and there were plenty of spots available near the water.

As the other reviews mention, Hoyt, the park maintenance person, was very friendly and helpful in the morning when he first saw us.

Some notes:

  • Watch for signs on where exactly you can park (we accidentally parked in a more rocky area that was revealed to us to be an important path by Hoyt in the morning)
  • There is a restroom (open again after covid), so don't just go anywhere in the park

Quiet, Free, & Beautiful

On the banks of the Llano River lies the city park for Junction, TX where overnight stays of RV’s both big and small is a common, even welcomed, site. While there aren’t exactly established campsites there are plenty of places to pull over and get settled for the night. The city park’s maintenance guy, Hoyt, will likely come over and welcome you, warn you about parking under the pecan trees during a windy night and basically see if you are doing okay. This kind of hospitality is rarely seen in city parks, but let’s be clear, this is a different place.

On the other side of town, the exits from Interstate 10 bustle with activity and semi-trucks, but here the water flows gently and the only thing that looks like it’s in a hurry are the Redhead Ducks and Coots when they get spooked by a kayaker on the water. Most folks only stop here for the night as they pass on to their next destination, and the actual “permissible” length of stay is somewhat vague. Probably shouldn’t push it past 3 nights, tops.

The park has bathrooms, however they were closed as a result of Covid regulations, so campers need to be self-contained. There are no electrical hook-ups, or water, but across the river lies the Tree Cabins RV park which offers all the usual amenities. Verizon cell phone service was excellent in the park.

Within a 10 minute walk, lies the only grocery store and gas station conveniences. There are the usual assortment of fast food restaurants near the interstate. The nearby S. Llano River State Park offers great opportunities for hiking, biking, mtn. biking, birding and much more.

A gem of a park

This is truly a gem of a park. No hookups, but a free park. Hoyt the city park guy, has warned about parking under the pecan tree limbs in windy conditions and to please park to not impede traffic driving through the park. But there are at least a half dozen places or more, that would make great sites. We are right on the rivers edge at the junction of the two rivers. Beautiful views, the park is very nice to just walk along the rivers edge, there are picnic tables and grills, volleyball court, basketball court, pavilions with picnic tables, and fire pits. The people of junction have built a beautiful park, I try to remember I am a guest in there park, and thank them for being such gracious hosts. We want to go to town and shop with the merchants to show our appreciation. Thank You Junction!

Gem of a free campsite!

You can camp here for up to 3 nights. Park anywhere along the water. Plenty of space for any type of rig. Great service for att and T-Mobile. There’s a bathroom house but it was locked. Plenty of fire pits, picnic tables, playground, dogs allowed, and you can swim and fish in the dam. The only weird thing is that the local traffic through the park is insane. At least a car a minute on the weekends. There’s a laundromat and grocery store a half a mile away. Would stay here again!
