Quiet, Free, & Beautiful

On the banks of the Llano River lies the city park for Junction, TX where overnight stays of RV’s both big and small is a common, even welcomed, site. While there aren’t exactly established campsites there are plenty of places to pull over and get settled for the night. The city park’s maintenance guy, Hoyt, will likely come over and welcome you, warn you about parking under the pecan trees during a windy night and basically see if you are doing okay. This kind of hospitality is rarely seen in city parks, but let’s be clear, this is a different place.

On the other side of town, the exits from Interstate 10 bustle with activity and semi-trucks, but here the water flows gently and the only thing that looks like it’s in a hurry are the Redhead Ducks and Coots when they get spooked by a kayaker on the water. Most folks only stop here for the night as they pass on to their next destination, and the actual “permissible” length of stay is somewhat vague. Probably shouldn’t push it past 3 nights, tops.

The park has bathrooms, however they were closed as a result of Covid regulations, so campers need to be self-contained. There are no electrical hook-ups, or water, but across the river lies the Tree Cabins RV park which offers all the usual amenities. Verizon cell phone service was excellent in the park.

Within a 10 minute walk, lies the only grocery store and gas station conveniences. There are the usual assortment of fast food restaurants near the interstate. The nearby S. Llano River State Park offers great opportunities for hiking, biking, mtn. biking, birding and much more.
