Overview

Double Lake Recreation Area was built in 1937 by the Civilian Conservation Corps and offers a little of everything, including camping, fishing, swimming, picnicking, hiking and simply relaxing in nature. A variety of tent, RV and group campsites are available.

Recreation

Double Lake is open for fishing year round. Only boats with small electric motors are allowed. A 5-mile hiking trail leads to Big Creek Scenic Area, and there is access to part of the 128-mile Lone Star Hiking Trail. A 20-mile mountain bike trail meanders around the lake.Swimmers can relax on a sandy beach after taking a cool plunge. Learn more about recreation in the national forest.

Facilities

Double Lake Recreation Area facilities includes family camping units, group camping, picnicking units, a picnic shelter, beach with swimming area and a concession stand with bathhouse.

Natural Features

The area has rolling hills forested with hardwood and pines. The campground is surrounded by the 23-acre Double Lake. Temperatures are moderate to cool from September through May, and hot and humid from June to August. Winters are cool and wet.

Once a great little Campground

What was once a great little campground is showing signs of neglect. Not the camp hosts fault, need bathroom repairs, boardwalk repairs, trail repairs. Can tell it was once a gem, and could be again with a little support.

Peaceful, Private Campsites

We enjoyed camping at Double Lake. The campsites are huge and well kept. I believe all have full hookups. We had a lakefront site which had a private little path to the lake. The shore was good for fishing. There is a trail which goes around the whole lake, and it was such a nice hike we did it several times. The woods are beautiful and bath houses are clean and well supplied. There are plenty of shady sites, which makes this a great campground for summer in Texas. There is a swimming area but we didn't get in the water. We will definitely camp here again.

Spacious campground with plenty of trails nearby

We enjoyed a really nice weekend here for our first ever RV camping trip. The RV specific sites have sewer hook ups which was nice for newbies like us. The sites were nicely spaced out except for a few that seemed to be for groups traveling together. Miles and miles of hiking and mountain biking trails are easily accessed.
