Fall Creek Falls State Park Campground

    Beautiful facility

This park is amazing. There is a lot to do, from golfing to some hiking. Looks like it’s great for kids and families, but I’m a single traveler. For me, the campgrounds were crowded and tight, though everyone around me respected the quiet hours. I’m a tent camper, so I appreciate running water and clean facilities if I’m going to come in from the woods and camp in a civilized space. These facilities were not very clean, two of three toilets were missing seats and I really didn’t want to touch anything (with or without COVID being a consideration). I camped on a Monday, so I understand that it was a busy weekend and the facilities likely weren’t yet cleaned, but in addition to camper use, the facilities were buggy, cobwebby and in need of a deep clean and significant refreshing. So ... four stars because of the beautiful setting. From a camping perspective it left me wanting and I’ve enjoyed better overall experiences and facilities for 1/3 the price.

Fall Creek Falls State Park Campground

    The Gorge

The park offers several campgrounds than can accommodate RV's, tent camping and primitive campsites. There are water and electrical hookups at all sites except the primitive. There are bathhouses and even cabin rentals for those who prefer that. You can purchase ice, firewood and food at the camp store on property and there is also a place to do your laundry for a small fee. Each site offers a table and grill. All are drive up except the primitive sites. This park has the highest free falling waterfall (256 feet) East of the Mississippi River! There are plenty of activities and hiking to explore just visit the parks website for more information!

    Sweetwater KOA

    Awesome Holiday Campground

This is a very lively, well traveled RV Park and Campground. Sweetwater is a Holiday KOA meaning it’s has more amenities than their Journey parks (meant for traveling through).

The park has quite a few large sites for big rigs that are about 80-100ft long. The maximum rig size is 60ft. Some sites are paved, most are gravel. There are two sites that are very long with amazing decks.

The park offers full hook up RV Sites, Cabins, Tent sites. For amenities there is a bouncy blob (dry), small pond with fountain and memorial bench, large playground for the kids, volleyball, basketball, I’m not sure what the game is next to the blob. They have two dog parks, one for tiny pups and one for larger pups. There is a nice pavillion near the pond with a large fire pit. They have trash bins distributed throughout the park making trash disposal convenient.

This park goes all out for the holidays. We are a month out from Halloween and they have done a spectacular job with decorating. They have lots of kids events. On Saturday there is a train that takes kids and adults on a ride around the park.

Everyone who works here has been super friendly and helpful. They really seem to go above and beyond making sure everyone has a great stay.

Cellular signals for AT&T and TMobile we’re both pretty good. We were able to stream and work. There were a couple of brief moments that getting signal was a challenge, but overall it was easy to work.

    Frozen Head State Park Campground

Beautiful State Park with a National Park Feel

Frozen Head is a wonderful place. For starters, the ranger that was on duty at the Visitor's Center was so helpful and kind. The campground is in close proximity to many of the trailheads. There is a nice bathhouse, but all the sites are rustic (non electric). There are also many well kept backcountry sites with fire pits if you are backpacking. The surroundings are gorgeous: the foothills of the Appalachians and the hiking is superb and challenging. If you are able, make sure to hike to the Lookout Tower! This is a great park and campground if you want to experience the beauty of East Tennessee without the crowds of the Smoky Mountains.

Savage Falls Campground — Savage Gulf State Park

    Perfect for solitude

Savage Gulf Natural Area is massive with several miles between entrance points that lead to stunning overlooks of the gorges and gulfs, and several miles worth of trails within each location. I visited in early October and plan on revisiting during more colorful time in the landscape and after a good rain to see what must be rapid waterfalls and streams. There were interesting bridges over the water ways, wifi available at the ranger station and quaint camping within an easy walk from the parking lot. I didn't see another person the whole time I was hiking and camping which is exactly what I was looking for. The trails do follow through slopes and boulders so the difficulty varies, I broke a sweat. I also saw that one of the trails leads to a cabin that I didn't see this time. It was beautiful.

    Bluewater Resort & RV Campground

    Blue Water Resort

I hate to give this place a good review because I'm afraid that it will become so popular we won't be able to get reservations in the future. This campground has been a great well know secret location for years. We have watched it grow over the years from a swamp campground to a 5 star campground.  The fishing is fantastic, Bass, Crappie, Bluegill and Rockfish are abundant. Campground sites are level and concrete. Power sources 30 and 50 Amp are available.  Restrooms are clean . The store is well stocked with liquid refreshments, bait, clothing, and great pizza. The back pavilion is large, covered, fans, TV are some of the benefits.  A band plays certain nights, fish fry and barbecue happens frequently.  There is a covered marina, a fishing pier, a stocked fishing pond for kids and a great refreshing pool. A laundry also is available.  The staff is courteous and knowledgeable. This is God's campground.  Please don't come

Guide to Crab Orchard

The Cumberland Plateau region near Crab Orchard sits at approximately 2,000 feet elevation with a mixture of limestone and sandstone formations creating a rugged landscape. The area receives around 54 inches of rainfall annually, supporting dense hardwood forests surrounding most camping areas. Sites typically offer moderate protection from winds due to the region's rolling terrain and forest cover.

What to do

Hiking near waterfalls: Fall Creek Falls State Park Campground provides access to miles of trails with varying difficulty levels. "A short hike to several backcountry sites. Our original spot was Panther Gap Rockhouse. Unfortunately this site was wet! Everything was wet! There was a fire ring and tables available at this site. But we moved to Tub Springs which was amazing," reports Carissa D.

Fishing opportunities: Cumberland Mountain State Park Campground offers a stocked lake with various fishing options. "This is a larger state park that includes a restaurant, golf course, pool, etc. but also some nice trails to enjoy the natural beauty of the area. The Cumberland State Scenic Trail is the local long trail, which can be access from the park," notes Lynn G.

Water recreation: Boat rentals provide a different perspective on the natural surroundings. "Most sites are small but was very quiet. Im a bigger guy and had 2 small girls and was plannIng to quIck trip on the lake wIth them," mentions Matt A. about his experience, though he notes certain restrictions on motorized boats.

What campers like

Clean facilities: Visitors consistently mention the well-maintained bathhouses. "Cumberland Mtn. S.P. is a beautiful park, all interactions with staff were friendly and pleasent," writes Richard A., though he notes some facilities "could use a little love, the bathhouses are dated and in desperate need of renovation."

Wildlife viewing: Frozen Head State Park Campground offers opportunities to spot local fauna. "A truly beautiful well kept secret of TN. Beautiful grounds and wonderful waterfalls!!" shares Amy P. The park's secluded nature makes wildlife encounters more common.

Spacious sites: Many campers appreciate the room between campsites. "Good state park. Beautiful area and spacious sites. Will come again," remarks Jake W. about Cumberland Mountain State Park, highlighting the balance between convenience and privacy that makes glamping in Crab Orchard, Tennessee appealing.

What you should know

Variable site conditions: Some campgrounds have leveling challenges. "This is a nice area but sites in my section were pretty steep as in on a big hill so us tenters get quite a workout going up to the bathhouse! Not to mention, was very difficult to fit two tents and vehicles at the site since the ONLY level spot was the gravel drive," explains Terri D.

Weather considerations: Belle Ridge Retreat can experience significant weather changes. "Great campground with outstanding facilities. The overlook has a 'Wow' view. It rained the whole weekend we were there, so not the best weekend, but the campground was great," notes Jason K.

Cell service limitations: Connectivity varies across the area. "There is no wifi and no cell phone reception," reports Mary D. about Frozen Head State Park, important information for those considering luxury glamping options who may need to stay connected.

Tips for camping with families

Playground access: Sweetwater KOA offers multiple child-friendly amenities. "Plenty for the kids to do—arcade room, jump pad, and playgrounds," notes Jovee S. The campground organizes activities specifically designed for children throughout peak seasons.

Holiday events: Seasonal programming enhances family stays. "We stayed during Halloween and they organized sites for trick or treating and had hot chocolate and candy in the office. We really enjoyed our stay and our kids were sad to leave," shares Theresa W.

Swimming options: Pools and natural water features provide recreation for all ages. "Great spacious site with beautiful scenery all around! There's a lake and walking trails. Descent bathrooms. Water nearby and they sell firewood," remarks Alicia F. about Cumberland Mountain State Park.

Tips from RVers

Site access: Crossville I-40 KOA provides convenient access for larger rigs. "Lots of green grass. The dog park is very well kept. There is a road close by but not a major freeway. It's one of the quieter KOA's I have stayed at," reports Candy H., noting the balance between accessibility and tranquility.

Hookup availability: Full-service sites make glamping in Crab Orchard more comfortable. "Campground has 5 loops and many nice sites although some are not level but they have worked on many of them. Full hookups are in Loop ! or A and this loop is open year around. Sites give you a lot of room," explains Bob T.

Road conditions: Access roads require careful navigation. "Road leading in is VERY narrow, don't know how two rigs could pass each other," cautions Gary G. about Sweetwater KOA, suggesting arrivals during daylight hours for those with larger vehicles or less towing experience.
