The park offers full hookup sites for RVs and tent camping areas where pets are welcome. Fort Pillow Historic State Park Campground also accommodates pets with spacious sites featuring concrete pads and gravel areas. Both parks maintain clean facilities with regular ranger patrols checking on campers. Tent pads at some sites consist of smooth pea gravel, which may require longer stakes for secure setup. Sites at Meeman-Shelby are positioned with enough distance between neighbors to provide privacy while still being close enough for those concerned about camping completely alone. Many campsites throughout the Memphis area provide electric hookups, picnic tables, and fire rings where permitted. Cell reception at Meeman-Shelby Forest State Park is notably limited, creating an ideal environment for disconnecting with your pet.
Hiking trails throughout these campgrounds provide excellent exercise opportunities for dogs, with Fort Pillow offering paths that follow the Mississippi River with scenic overlooks. The primitive sites at Fort Pillow rank among the most level and well-maintained tent camping options, featuring smooth pea gravel surfaces and community water hydrants throughout the park. Memphis KOA provides cabin options for those wanting more comfort while still bringing pets along. During October, campers should be aware of falling acorns which can create hazards in some camping areas. Some campgrounds like Fort Pillow have recently undergone renovations, including new concrete pads and improved electrical service at RV sites. The group campsite at Fort Pillow provides ample space for dogs to run around while remaining separate from other campers. Visitors with pets should note that bathroom facilities at some parks may be limited to single-occupancy style facilities, potentially creating lines during busy periods.

My dog LOVES the dog park ~ the swimming pool looks nice and showers bathrooms are some of the best I’ve seen since Michigan Highly recommend!
Small but clean. Very friendly staff. There are plenty of trees for shade. Nice pool, bathrooms and rec room. The laundry room is large and air conditioned. The only downside is it has quite a bit of road traffic noise and a strange side road entrance.1
So far so good, great views of the Mississippi River and the freight boats coming in. Wished they would add a dog park !
Ok for a night. Easy 15 min drive to downtown Memphis for sightseeing. In a low lying area and it had rained earlier in the week. Campground very wet. Lots of puddles and muck. Should have used the gravel pile at the back of the campground to fill in potholes. Bathhouse clean but in a slight state of disrepair like loose toilets. Amenities included pool, playground, store, cafe, dog park, horseshoes, beanbag, ladder ball, bikes. Staff very nice.
We stopped for one night and it was a great stay. Super clean and easy concrete pull through spot. We had a nice view of the Mississippi River even though we were in the second row. Pet friendly!
Nice campground next to Graceland. Clean park. Open area for dogs to walk.
Campsites are mostly spacious and hosts are friendly and helpful. We really enjoyed the trails and roads for walking/biking.
Not crowded and pretty quiet. August in Tennessee is hot and muggy!
We showed up after hours and the security guard was able to help us get situated. We walked right over for a tour of Graceland and the Elvis museums. Also, if your hungry, call Marlows BBQ and they’ll send over their pink limo for easy pickup and drop off. They also have a small playground and area to walk your dog. Overall, we enjoyed our stay. Very friendly staff!
Campsites near Atoka, Tennessee sit within the upper Mississippi River alluvial plain, with elevations generally between 250-400 feet above sea level. The region experiences hot, humid summers with temperatures regularly exceeding 90°F and mild winters with occasional freezing temperatures. Several campgrounds provide primitive sites with pea gravel surfaces designed for optimal drainage during the frequent summer thunderstorms common to this area.
Historical exploration: 10 miles from campgrounds. Fort Pillow Historic State Park Campground offers access to Civil War sites with interpretive trails. "The historic site of Ft Pillow from the Civil War is on one of the hiking trails. The trails also go along the Mississippi river and provide some beautiful views," notes visitor Rick P.
Night sky viewing: Best after 9pm May-September. Primitive sites at Fort Pillow Historic State Park Campground provide excellent stargazing opportunities away from city lights. Camper Sara S. mentions that "a nice surprise about this campground was how quiet it was. Not very busy when we visited we got to soak in the scenery in serenity."
River watching: Daily activity. The Mississippi River offers constant entertainment from Tom Sawyer's RV Park, where "tugboats pushed barges against the current at a slower than walking pace. Trees with root balls intact floated downstream," according to camper Greg S., who enjoyed the riverside views despite high temperatures.
Free laundry facilities: Available 24/7. Tom Sawyer's RV Park provides complimentary laundry services, which campers find particularly valuable during extended stays. Kristy J. reports, "The free laundry facilities were very clean and nice with several machines. We was there from March till November."
Private bathhouse facilities: Renovated 2022. Fort Pillow Historic State Park Campground offers suite-style bathrooms with individual facilities. "Each bathroom was private in that you had your own suite style bathroom with toilet, sink & shower," writes Shana D., though she notes the potential for lines during peak season.
Shaded sites: Limited availability. Memphis East Campground offers valuable tree cover during hot summer days. Jessica G. appreciated this feature: "It's a nice camp ground ... pleasant hosts... nice pool... and there is shade. After chasing a heat wave in a teardrop with no ac this was a great relief."
Bug intensity: High May-September. Mosquitoes are particularly aggressive at several campgrounds during warmer months. "Unless you are in love with mosquitos you may want to stay away from here in the summer," warns Andrew S. about Meeman-Shelby Forest State Park, adding "I'm from the south so mosquitos are pretty much the norm for summer, so they didn't deter us."
Limited cell service: Multiple parks affected. Several campgrounds have minimal cellular connectivity. Ellie B. reports about Meeman-Shelby: "We had 0 service anywhere near our campsite. Nice to disconnect for a night, but plan accordingly."

Leveling challenges: Bring blocks. Several campgrounds present uneven terrain requiring additional equipment. Jason J. explains about Meeman-Shelby: "The primitive sites (there are three) are on a separate and I maintained road off of the campsite loop. Spacious sites, but if the weather is wet, it can be a bit iffy getting to them in a low clearance vehicle."
Security considerations: 24-hour personnel. RV owners appreciate the safety measures at some facilities. At Graceland RV Park, camper Erika P. reports, "I felt completely safe at the camp ground. They have a 24-hour security guard at the entrance and you must sign-in to enter the property."
Site selection strategy: Check before booking. When staying at pet friendly campgrounds near Atoka, Tennessee, check specific site features.
