This campground is mainly used by hunters in the fall. Sites are mostly for small RV’s, trailers, or tents. The park has a lot of mature trees which causes problems with overhanging limbs in the road. One side of the park has younger trees and it is easier for larger rigs to maneuver and there is more of an open feeling. Pads are fairly level. Bathrooms and even the pit toilets are very clean and did not smell, even had hand sanitizer.

Site was well maintained. There are several water sites for great views. There are hiking trails in the park. Camp is set amid the rolling hills showcasing the beautiful crops and ranches of SD.

Really nice campground. Shelters at each site. Picnic table and fire rings, too . Washroom was clean and stocked. Sites are nicely spaced. There were stairs down from our campsite to a gravel beach. Water was warm in Lake Francis Case on the Missouri River.

      New Frontier RV Campground

      Wonderful shower pressure

We were only staying for a night, but we found this campground just fine.

Plus: amazing hot water and water pressure in the showers. Amazing wifi (best we’ve had available this trip). Most sites had a wooden covered area for the picnic table, which would be very helpful if it rained.

Con: site wasn’t completely level, showers and bathrooms had curtains only, not doors.

There were lots of garbage bins. Other reviews mentioned the tired mobile homes near the entrance. They are separated from the RV park by a chain link fence. The RV side is clean and maintained.

      Snake Creek Campground SD

This is a pretty park, probably primarily used by families that are boating or fishing the Missouri River. Playground for kids. Clean restrooms, was quiet at night. We stayed here one night in our small RV on June 3rd, 2015. We could not find any camping available along Interstate 90 while heading west, and got lucky with a cancelation at this park. We had to travel 20 miles out of our way to camp!! Lesson learned to plan ahead while traveling through South Dakota.

      Hills RV Park

Close to the interstate for easy access, yet surrounded by Sourh Dakota corn fields

An excellent choice for staying if traveling across South Dakota. The sites are gravel, but are all pull through. Most are full hookup, but there is a on site dump station for those with electric only. The swimming pool was an absolute total plus for a hot July day. The park owner Nancy is a fantastic host. Definitely a stay again park

      New Frontier RV Campground

      Great Campground!

We stopped here on our way across South Dakota, and it was the perfect place. It’s right off the interstate and is extremely well-managed and clean. They have lots of yard space to walk dogs along their property, and the staff was incredibly nice and helpful throughout our stay!

      Kennebec KOA

      Clean, Friendly , No frills

Very nice site with clean bathrooms and showers. Some sites have shade. Well maintained and the owners are very friendly. Convenient location and just a short drive from the highway. Some road noise but not bad at all. The wind was very slack the day we stayed so the mosquitoes were out at night. Would 100% stay again if traveling thru South Dakota.

      Kennebec KOA

If the owners say don't come till 2pm, then don't come till 2pm.

The park is right off the highway in a pretty desolate part of South Dakota. It was the end of the season, and so although I didn't expect a crowd, I also didn't expect to be the only person there at 1 pm.

Severe thunderstorms had followed me for the preceding three days, meaning that I was tired and ready to plug in, put on fuzzy socks, and read a good book, but when I pulled into this KOA, the office was dark, and there wasn't another soul in the campground. I pulled through anyway since I had already paid, only to find that most of the spaces were flooded. I have a 1-ton camper van with rear wheel drive and didn't want to get stuck, so I pulled back around to the front of the park. About 1/2 hour later, another camper couple showed up, and then a third. There was no answer to our phone calls to the owners, and since there wasn't another campground for 20 or so miles, we all decided just to stay put and hope the owners showed up. Finally, at 2 pm, they showed up and sorted everything out. Although they live on the property, they don't respond to calls until after 2 pm.

Evidently, the storms were a rarity and caught everyone off guard. It may well be that I would have had a better experience had the weather been better and/or during peak season. My only suggestion to the owners is to please return calls/answer the phone. Travellers are usually tired and unfamiliar with the areas, so a reassuring voice can be crucial.

They do have a store of sorts, but it's minimal. I'm not sure I would stay here again.

Most cabin rental facilities in the area remain open from April through October, with limited winter availability.

Water activities on Lake Francis Case: American Creek Campground offers direct lake access where campers can rent kayaks and paddleboards at the beach. "Great for picnics, volleyball, kayaking, etc. even on a rainy day!" notes a visitor to West Chamberlain. Families often bring bikes to explore the extensive trail networks that connect camping areas.

    What campers like

Spacious sites with shade: Cabin sites in this region typically offer more space than standard campsites. Many cabin locations feature mature trees that provide natural cooling during hot South Dakota summers.

Clean, well-maintained facilities: The cabins near Chamberlain consistently receive positive reviews for cleanliness. At New Frontier RV Campground, a visitor noted, "Beautiful, clean park. Decent sized lots. Bathrooms clean. Staff was super. I highly recommend this place." Another camper at Buryanek Recreation Area shared, "Washroom was clean and stocked. Sites are nicely spaced."

We've gone camping out here twice and both ended very scarey." Many cabin sites include sheltered picnic areas to provide protection during unexpected weather.

Access road conditions: Some cabin locations require travel on unpaved roads. A visitor to Buryanek Recreation Area noted, "Access to this area is off highway 44 but be prepared for several miles of minimally maintained dirt road (with some big hills) to get there." During wet conditions, some access roads may become challenging without all-wheel drive.

Seasonal considerations: Cottonwood trees can create messy conditions during certain times. "This is a great campground on the west bank of the Missouri River. Very nice and well kept facilities but beware there are lots of cottonwoods and at times during our stay it looked like it was snowing," reported a Buryanek visitor.

    Tips for camping with families

At West Bend Recreation Area, a camper observed, "Kids were everywhere having fun on the lake, on the playground and riding bikes."

Entertainment for rainy days: Pack indoor activities as summer thunderstorms can develop quickly. At Hills RV Park, facilities include "washing machine and dryer and bathrooms," providing options during inclement weather. Their laundromat features machines that are "dated yet clean in good working order," allowing families to handle unexpected clothing emergencies.

    Tips from RVers

Site selection for large rigs: Some cabin areas have limitations for larger RVs. A camper at Hills RV Park shared, "Our rigs length truck and camper connected is 47'. We were able to pull thru the campsite and park. Without having to unhook." When bringing an RV to cabin areas for additional accommodations, request sites with adequate clearance.

Utility connections: Most cabin areas provide electrical hookups near cabin sites for supplemental RV parking. "Really nice pull through sites with water, electric and sewer. $30 per nite," noted a visitor to Hills RV Park. Water pressure at many locations is excellent, with a New Frontier RV Campground guest reporting, "Great water pressure."

Wi-Fi availability: Connectivity varies significantly between cabin locations. At Kennebec KOA, located about 30 miles from Chamberlain, a visitor shared, "This KOA will probably not a destination for us, but it is a great stay along the way."
