Best RV Parks & Resorts near Bighorn Canyon National Recreation Area

CAMPER SUMMARY PRESENTED BYFord

RV camping options near Bighorn Canyon include Indian Campground, Buffalo KOA, Deer Park RV Park, and The Lake Stop. Indian Campground provides level pull-through RV sites with full hookups including 50-amp electric service and operates from April through October. Buffalo KOA features spacious RV sites alongside a creek with 50-amp service, and remains open year-round with good WiFi connectivity. Deer Park RV Park offers pull-through sites with gravel pads approximately 80 feet in length, suitable for 40-foot fifth wheels and large towing vehicles. "The sites are not too close to each other and there are lots of pretty trees between and throughout. Spots are small sized gravel and quite level with a grassy area and picnic table for each."

Several RV parks in the area provide amenities beyond basic hookups. The Lake Stop operates from mid-April to early November with both electric and sewer hookups for RVs. Between Buffalo and Sheridan, RV travelers can access multiple dump stations, though availability varies seasonally. Cell service is generally reliable with visitors reporting 3-4 bars on Verizon and excellent performance on T-Mobile networks. Most parks accommodate pets, though some have restrictions. A visitor commented that highway noise can be noticeable at parks close to I-90, particularly for those in pop-up campers rather than hard-sided RVs. During peak summer months, reservations are recommended as popular parks like Buffalo KOA fill quickly, especially for premium creek-side sites.

High Plains RV Resort & Campground

    Not geared for tent camping

Rolled on in and was really disappointed. We literally are the only ones in a tent. The rest of the people here seem to be long term RVs. It does have any shade. Close to town for those who like that. The bathroom and shower were okay. Felt like a pool bathroom/shower lol. Out tent is right under a light so not much for darkness. Served it purpose. Oh and no fire ring or table.

Deer Park RV Park and Campground

    Decent Private Campground

This wasn’t our first stay at Deer Park Campground (CG), but it was our first time arriving from the west. We took the first Buffalo exit, which matched up with both RV Life and Waze GPS directions, and easily made our way to the CG. Check-in was quick and smooth. We were guided to premium pull-through site 104. There’s not much “premium”  about this gravel site—aside from its generous 80-foot length, which was more than enough for our 40’ fifth wheel and F-450. The site included a picnic table, and the utilities were centered on the pad. We were able to position ourselves well between the two black tank dump outlets. Water pressure was decent at around 40 psi, and the 50 AMP electric service worked without issue. However, the grass was in desperate need of mowing. Right after we arrived, one of the workers began mowing the sites behind us. Those sites weren't filled the two nights we stayed. Since we had reservations, and they knew which site they were putting us in, it would have been nice if they had mowed the sites that were actually filled. We had two bars on Verizon and four bars on T-Mobile. While there are mature trees throughout the CG, satellite reception should be possible at most sites—especially if you can adjust your antenna. There are several “Deer Run” WiFi networks available. I connected to the first one I saw and got a surprising 279 Mbps upload and 119 Mbps download—an enormous improvement since our last visit about two years ago. Our T-Mobile hotspot also performed well, clocking in at 125 Mbps upload and 22.6 Mbps download. Sites are decently spaced, offering a bit of breathing room between neighbors. You can hear I-90 from the CG, but it’s far enough away that the noise isn’t bothersome. One of our favorite features was the nature trail near the front of the CG—about a half-mile loop—where we spotted several deer. A peaceful walk and a nice touch to the stay. We noticed that while the price per night has increased by $20 since we stayed in site 105 in September 2021, the facilities and the grounds haven't changed.

    Sheridan/Big Horn Mountains KOA

    Good choice for the area

Clean. Friendly. Noisy from interstate traffic. Close to town. Bike trails from the campground. WiFi not available at the far end. Need a repeater.

    Boulder Park Campground

    Beautiful High

    Fee:  $19.00

    Open June close Sep

    Limit 14 days

    Reserve: 877-444-6777 or recreation.gov

    Sites: 32 single sites

Host on site picnic table fire ring lantern pole water trash

Some sites are close together with some more private, some are shady and some no shade at all. There small boulders scattered around the site and with the beginnings of the fall colors beginning to turn beautiful. There is a small creek that runs along the back side of some of the sites.

The road and sites are covered with gravel. Drive slow to keep the dust down.

This is a very peaceful site and great to enjoy all the Bighorn has to offer. You will find off road trails, scenic jeep roads and hiking trails. Meadow Lark Lake is a short distance from the campground. The nearest dump station is 15 miles at Powder River Pass.  Watch for the majestic moose wandering around the campground.

    Indian Campground

    Good spot for an overnight

We spent only one night here while we were on our way home from a two week long camping trip. We were in RV site 6, which was right next to the pool. The site was level, and included water, electric, and sewer hookups. There was a picnic table, but no fires were allowed (I think if you have a portable gas fire pit you can use that) and no fire rings are provided.

The bathrooms were clean and in working order. We did not use the showers, but they appeared to be clean and in working order as well. We did enjoy a dip in the pool and it was very nice! There is a little general store and you can buy ice and even meat for grilling burgers and whatnot. The playground was also nice for the kids to enjoy. The staff were friendly and helpful.

I will say that we didn't sleep well due to the noise from the very nearby highway. But we were in a pop-up camper. So if you're in a hard-sided trailer or an actual RV, this may not be as much of an issue to you.

    Powder River Campground & Cabins

Cheap Basic RV Park with Full Hookups

Came here in May 2020, making a mad dash to WA to hunker down for the summer.  We booked a night here because of it being a Passport America Park and at the right location for our route.  For $20 we got a pull through that was level enough, gravel and full hookups.  We did not use their bathrooms, but they have them.  Mostly occupied by local workers, clean enough but some junk hanging around.  Owner on site and nice enough and for the price it was just fine.  There are about 5 or so pull through sites that are super easy to get into and out of for an easy one night stay.  It is on the Powder River, but not much of a scenic spot.  Has good free wifi, we got a decent Verizon signal here, too.  I wouldn’t make an effort to come here again, but if it works in our route and a one night stay I would do it again.

Deer Park RV Park and Campground

Lovely campground minus the barking dogs

The staff are very sweet and helpful. The campground is large, super charming and very clean except for the pile of dog crap that was left near our spot. Mostly quiet during the day but there is a mobile home park behind us where dogs were barking off and on half the night. The spots are not too close to each other and there are lots of pretty trees between and throughout. There is currently a fire ban so no fires but that was to be expected. Large clean laundry room with 4 washers and 4 driers. Small shop in the office with some rv necessities, beverages and ice cream novelties. You have to buy the local honey they sell, it's amazing and jarred right across the street...chances are you may have met a bee there that made that delicious honey. I did not use the pool but it was very clean. There are pull throughs and back ins for Rvs with plenty of room to maneuver for the back ins. Spots are small sized gravel and quite level with a grassy area and picnic table for each. Wifi is terrible but you can hook up to get several cable stations included in your fee. They also have a great walking trail to stretch your legs. Super excited to walk out the rv in the morning and get greeted by several beautiful wild turkeys passing through. Just a short drive into Buffalo for great food and shopping. If it weren't for the barking dogs I'd give 5 stars!
