J Strom Thurmond Lake spans 71,000 acres with over 1,000 miles of shoreline straddling the South Carolina-Georgia border. Water levels fluctuate seasonally, typically higher in spring and lower in late summer. Primitive camping options require filtering lake water, which can be silty during low water periods and requires pre-filtering to avoid clogging portable filtration systems.
What to do
Hiking on Bartram Trail: Access the Bartram Trail through Petersburg Campground for day hikes with lake views. "Bartram Trail runs through Petersburg Campground, providing excellent hiking opportunities for dog owners," writes Todd C., who notes the trail is "terrific mountain for biking and hiking passes through the property."
Boat fishing: The large reservoir offers prime fishing opportunities for multiple species. "Thurmond Lake provides some of the best fishing, hunting, and water sports in the southeastern US. Anglers fish for largemouth bass, bream, crappie, catfish and striped bass," notes a visitor at Winfield - J Strom Thurmond Lake.
Kayaking from waterfront sites: Many campgrounds allow direct water access for paddlers. At Mistletoe State Park Campground, Austin M. appreciates the "big selection of waterfront sites," which provide convenient lake access for watercraft.
What campers like
Spacious campsites: Sites throughout the lake's campgrounds offer room to spread out. At Ridge Road - J Strom Thurmond Lake, Ivan C. notes, "These sites are all good sized lots and not on top of each other. Amenities are clean, but could use another bath house or two."
Peninsula camping spots: Several campgrounds feature sites on small peninsulas for enhanced water views. At Pointes West Army Resort, one camper recommends "Sites L, M, and N are all on a little peninsula that sticks out into Clarks Hill Lake, and are our personal favorites!"
Off-season solitude: Visiting during cooler months means fewer crowds. "Monday, September 14th. Warm and muggy with rain here and there... It's a very nice campground!" shares Frank M. about Modoc - J Strom Thurmond Lake during his off-season visit.
What you should know
Primitive camping considerations: Some areas have limited facilities. For pet friendly camping near Clarks Hill, South Carolina at Bussey Point Wilderness Area, cody S. explains: "The campsites have a picnic table and a fire pit. The campground has a well for water and an open pit latrine. There's no power which is perfect for camping off grid away from all the trailers."
Pack-in, pack-out requirement: Some areas have no trash service. "If you pack it on, pack it out. There is no trash pickup provided," warns Linda A. about Bussey Point.
Variable water levels: The lake can experience significant level changes. Andy S. notes at Mistletoe State Park: "The water level was also extremely low when I was there so some of those rocks are probably covered by water earlier in the year."
