J Strom Thurmond Lake campgrounds feature multiple pet-friendly options along the scenic shoreline. Modoc, Petersburg, Ridge Road, and Winfield campgrounds all welcome pets at their waterfront sites. Dogs must remain on leashes no longer than 6 feet when outside vehicles or tents. Mistletoe State Park and Elijah Clark State Park both provide pet-friendly accommodations including tent sites, RV hookups, and cabins. Bussey Point Wilderness Area offers a more primitive camping experience for those traveling with pets. Most campgrounds have well-spaced sites providing privacy for campers with animals. The bathhouses are clean but basic, with some sites featuring water and electric hookups suitable for pet owners requiring climate control during summer months.

Bartram Trail runs through Petersburg Campground, providing excellent hiking opportunities for dog owners. Lake access points throughout the campgrounds allow pets to cool off in designated swimming areas away from official beaches where dogs are typically prohibited. Campers have found secluded spots within the parks that permit dogs to swim alongside their owners. Sites along the peninsula areas offer sunset views over the water, creating peaceful evening environments for pet walks. Poison ivy exists in some areas, requiring vigilance when walking dogs through wooded sections. The campgrounds' spacious design allows for biking and hiking directly from most sites, providing convenient exercise options for both pets and owners. Wildlife including deer are common in the camping areas, so keeping dogs properly leashed is essential for safety.

Petersburg - J Strom Thurmond Lake

This is a great USACOE campground on Clark Hill Lake

90+ sites with water, 50/30 amp electric, a dozen or so primitive sites. Most have access to water and if the lake level is good, there is usually some beach area at most sites where you can swim, tie off a boat. We love it here and have been coming for Memorial Day and Labor Day for 25 years. Reservations are easy through Reserveusa.gov. Sites are all hard compact dirt/gravel but most are very level. Gate is locked each evening at 10:00 with a combination lock code provided to you for access. Very safe and secure. Just a couple of miles from Clark Hill Dam which has a nice visitor’s center. About 20 minutes north of Augusta suburbs of Martinez and Evans.

Winfield - J Strom Thurmond Lake

      Quiet Lakeside Campground

Winfield is a compartively little-known USACE campground situated on a peninsula near the more heavily-traffic Mistletoe State Park. Quiet and peaceful, it's tucked up the Little River and therefore not on the main body of Clarks Hill Lake (Lake Strom Thurmond, if you're form South Carolina) which sees a good deal of boat traffic (pontoon boats in particular) in the summer months. Great for water activities (kayaking, SUP, etc) with awesome evening views.

      Raysville Campground

      Very quiet

Raysville is a hidden gem at Clarks Hill Lake.  this campground is much quieter and more secluded than the others in the area.  they still offer decent bath houses with showers.  the only negative in my mind is the lack of a swimming area for kids.

      Pointes West Army Resort

      Amazing for the price!

My wife and I have stayed here three times in both early spring and mid-autumn. Two of those times we had the place to ourselves. Sites L, M, and N are all on a little peninsula that sticks out into Clarks Hill Lake, and are our personal favorites!

      Mistletoe State Park Campground

      Mistletoe and Clarks Hill Reservoir

Mistletoe State Park is another great Georgia State Park. Tucked way back in a big pine forest and nestled right up on the banks of Clarks Hill Reservoir it is well worth the effort to find reservations at this park. Over 70 sights with 30 amp, and water service, plenty of road side gray water dumps between sights and TWO dump stations. The Park Host do a fantastic job with keeping this park clean with multiple bath houses and a large amount of community space. For the hikers the trails are great, and very in difficulty to keep things fun and the backwoods hiking camp sights were great. The beach and boating facilities were very nice. The playgrounds were still closed off due to Con-19. We saw lots of wild life, lots of stars at night (gets really dark at night). I may be partial a little when it comes to Georgia State Parks but they have earned it. This one lives right up with the others I have visited. We had so much fun and created so many great memories that we can’t wait for our next adventure at another Ga State Park.

Hickory Knob State Park Resort — Hickory Knob State Park

      mehhh

Clark’s Hill is a Great Lake! HK is an OK park. It does have a nIce golf course and skeet shooting, kayak rentals, cabins, a restaurant and a pool. The campsites are nice enough. but. The entire park sits on a mound of ants. ants everywhere. ants of all varieties. And most of the lake access is solid Georgia red clay mud...

      Calhoun Falls State Park Campground

Overall, the best state park in SC

We travel and camp at many places across South Carolina but this was our first visit to Calhoun Falls State Park. What a gem! Beautiful scenery, large, spacious lakeside campsites. We enjoyed privacy, lake access from our campsite, and spectacular sunset views over the lake. Rangers and staff at park store are friendly and helpful. We can’t wait to go back.

      Baker Creek State Park Campground

Nice Campground About to Get Better!

We camped at Baker Creek (relatively local to us at only 30 miles away) for the first time 7-9 October 2020. We went for kayaking and mountain biking as well as just some time away. Baker Creek is off the main body of Clarks Hill Lake/Lake Strom Thurmond and as such is much quieter than some of the other campgrounds (e.g. Elijah Clark).

      Pros:

      • A smallish campground with many sites on the water or at least water-accessible.
      • Clean bathhouses
      • Super friendly Rangers and Campground hosts.
      • Quiet on land and from boat traffic noise
      • Comparatively inexpensive

      Cons:

      • Showing its age, it needs some work. Appears a bit run down with erosion evident on many sites.
      • No fire rings although fires are permitted (previous campers have built makeshift/ad hoc fire rings using the plentiful rocks in the area).
      • Can seem cramped with 50 sites in arelatively small area.
      • No T-Mobile call service in the area.

      The Good News (Renovations!):

Speaking with the Campground Host, and later one of the rangers, here are some developments about Baker Creek SP that will definitely be of interest.

      1. The park is closing the end of October 2020 as usual but is not projected to open in 2021 until 1 May once renovations are complete.

      2. Renovations to the campground include modernizing the sites which included reducing the number of sites from 50 to 30, increasing the size of the sites, installing 50A outlets and fire rings at a minimum.

      3. Once the park reopens, it will be open YEAR ROUND.

We will definitely be returning after they reopen and I'll post a new review.

    Guide to Clarks Hill

J Strom Thurmond Lake spans 71,000 acres with over 1,000 miles of shoreline straddling the South Carolina-Georgia border. Water levels fluctuate seasonally, typically higher in spring and lower in late summer. Primitive camping options require filtering lake water, which can be silty during low water periods and requires pre-filtering to avoid clogging portable filtration systems.

    What to do

Hiking on Bartram Trail: Access the Bartram Trail through Petersburg Campground for day hikes with lake views. "Bartram Trail runs through Petersburg Campground, providing excellent hiking opportunities for dog owners," writes Todd C., who notes the trail is "terrific mountain for biking and hiking passes through the property."

Boat fishing: The large reservoir offers prime fishing opportunities for multiple species. "Thurmond Lake provides some of the best fishing, hunting, and water sports in the southeastern US. Anglers fish for largemouth bass, bream, crappie, catfish and striped bass," notes a visitor at Winfield - J Strom Thurmond Lake.

Kayaking from waterfront sites: Many campgrounds allow direct water access for paddlers. At Mistletoe State Park Campground, Austin M. appreciates the "big selection of waterfront sites," which provide convenient lake access for watercraft.

    What campers like

Spacious campsites: Sites throughout the lake's campgrounds offer room to spread out. At Ridge Road - J Strom Thurmond Lake, Ivan C. notes, "These sites are all good sized lots and not on top of each other. Amenities are clean, but could use another bath house or two."

Peninsula camping spots: Several campgrounds feature sites on small peninsulas for enhanced water views. At Pointes West Army Resort, one camper recommends "Sites L, M, and N are all on a little peninsula that sticks out into Clarks Hill Lake, and are our personal favorites!"

Off-season solitude: Visiting during cooler months means fewer crowds. "Monday, September 14th. Warm and muggy with rain here and there... It's a very nice campground!" shares Frank M. about Modoc - J Strom Thurmond Lake during his off-season visit.

    What you should know

Primitive camping considerations: Some areas have limited facilities. For pet friendly camping near Clarks Hill, South Carolina at Bussey Point Wilderness Area, cody S. explains: "The campsites have a picnic table and a fire pit. The campground has a well for water and an open pit latrine. There's no power which is perfect for camping off grid away from all the trailers."

Pack-in, pack-out requirement: Some areas have no trash service. "If you pack it on, pack it out. There is no trash pickup provided," warns Linda A. about Bussey Point.

Variable water levels: The lake can experience significant level changes. Andy S. notes at Mistletoe State Park: "The water level was also extremely low when I was there so some of those rocks are probably covered by water earlier in the year."
