Big Rig Friendly RV Resort lives up to its name with spacious concrete pads, full hookups including 50-amp service, and amenities like a pool and pickle ball courts. Just west in Gilbert, Mr Z's RV Park provides big-rig-friendly sites with electric, water, and sewer connections, along with 50-amp service for larger motorhomes. Dreher Island State Park, situated on Lake Murray, features lakeside RV sites with water and electric hookups, though spaces can fill quickly during peak seasons. Broad River Campground, about 30 miles north of Chapin, offers full hookup sites with fire pits and is known for its peaceful setting. "Very nice concrete pads; large sites with fire pit, grill, and picnic table. Gravel roads have washed out areas but not terrible," noted one RV camper about the region's campgrounds.

Cell service varies by location, with stronger coverage at parks closer to town and potentially spotty reception at more remote campgrounds. Grocery stores, propane, and other services are readily available in Chapin, with a Publix, Lowes, and other retailers located approximately 15 minutes from most camping areas. During holiday weekends, advance bookings are essential as lakeside RV sites typically reach capacity.

    Weston Lake Recreation Area

    Nice sites!

Very nice concrete pads; large sites with fire pit, grill, and picnic table. Gravel roads have washed out areas but not terrible. Very open and quiet. Several long-term residents.

    Sesquicentennial State Park Campground

    We will be back!

Even though we had a few rainy days we could see the beauty of this park. Clean heated restrooms in Winter is a bonus. Lots of things to do for all ages. Helpful and friendly staff.

    Woodsmoke Family Campground

    Overnight Stop

Ok for overnight stop but wouldn't be a travel destination. Most sites seem to be long term or permanent sites. Very close to neighbor site, with fire pit being extremely close. Water, Sewer, Power, WiFi

    Sweetwater Lake Campground

    I love this place!

Sweetwater Lake Campground is a small RV campground. There is electric and water hookup and a dump station. Lots are decent size and fairly level on grass or gravel. The owners are very nice and available, if needed. Reservations are not taken, so you pull in and pick your spot. Drop your money in a lock box. The property has a nice size lake and all spots face it. There are fire pits and hammocks. The best and most fun part about this campground are the rescue donkeys. Their shelter and grazing area is situated directly behind the camper row. You can hear them bray and they will come to you and let you pet them, although, you should use caution as they warn you that donkeys bite. This is a very nice, quiet campground surrounded by private property of fields and lake. I really enjoyed our stay here!

    Chester State Park Campground

    Campsites and views, oh my!

First time staying at Chester State Park. Checked in at the Ranger’s station with friendly staff and a small store front with ice available. Picked pull through site 16. All 25 of the sites are on mostly level ground. The lake from the campground has a fairly new access via a ADA compliant walkway with lighting leading to swings, benches and Adirondack chairs surrounding a rock fire pit. There are benches facing the lake for sitting and or fishing and a new deck that provide even better views of the lake. The trails are well marked and wide that run along the lake edge. There is fishing, kayaks and canoes at the boat dock for rent and to our children’s disappointment no swimming in the lake. The other side of the park has the boat dock, playgrounds for the kiddos and plenty of grassy areas and picnic tables for sitting by the lake. Also there is a professional disc golf course on site. Last but not least the bathhouse is up to date, clean and well stocked.

    Sesquicentennial State Park Campground

    Needs improvements

Not a big rig friendly area. Our site was 30 amp, no sewer. I backed in the way I was told to and realized our water and electric were on the curb side. Had I known this ahead of time, I could have maybe pulled in another way. The service from another site was less than 3 feet from my power inlet to the camper. I called to make sure it would be ok to plug in there and they said no, even though no one used that site. The bathhouse was well below standards and really just unusable. I’ll pick another place if I’m ever in the area again.

    Aiken State Park Campground

    Amazing Find!

We stayed over on our way to Charleston, SC. We booked it online. We had no hookeups, but water and a dump station is available. There are hiking trails, canoeing, and fishing. The ranger was super friendly and they are pet friendly. We had to switch sites when we arrived due to a space issue. We have a 32’ RV and the site stated a max of 35’ but there was a tent pad that would have interfered with us being level. We were allowed to switch with no issues.

Military Park Shaw AFB Wateree Recreation Area and FamCamp

    Wateree Tent Camping

This was my family’s first time tent camping in the cold weather and it wasn’t that bad. The lakeside tent area provided beautiful scenery with access to restrooms and showers. It wasn’t too crowded as it was military members only and you can’t beat the price for a lakeside spot. We would definitely go tent camping here again!

    Aiken State Park Campground

    Canoeing Getaway

It is a very small campground. Narrow winding dirt road to small campsites. Bathhouse in the center. Check out the site pictures on their website, they are accurate. We only have a 17 foot camper and it still felt small. We stayed on site 16 which was nice and quiet. Site 18 would have been easier to back in to with the same amount of privacy. We got there early and were able to go right to our site. There were only 4 other campers there and the hosts. The bathhouse was older and could have been cleaner but it was okay. Most importantly it was warm. Our first night it got down to 27 and the water at the hose bib froze but once the sun came up it was fine. Less than 30 minutes to downtown Aiken. We loved the town and it was very pet friendly. Hopelands Gardens was beautiful, free and pet friendly. Had some good beer at Aiken Brewing Company and enjoyed all the shops downtown. We did go into Augusta and that was another 30 minutes from downtown Aiken. We will definitely go back in the warmer months to see some steeplechase horse racing and training, canoe and kayak the Edisto River and go hiking in Hitchcock Woods. There are quite a few museums we did not get to that would be nice to visit as well. I would definitely go back.

Guide to Chapin

Several campgrounds surround Chapin, South Carolina, situated near Lake Murray's 650 miles of shoreline. The area features wooded camping options with elevation changes between 300-400 feet above sea level. What to do

Lake activities year-round: Lake Murray offers excellent fishing opportunities throughout the seasons. Hiking trails exploration: The region has secluded walking paths with varying difficulty levels. Will J. discovered that "there are a bunch of trails behind the campground. I don't think a lot of people knew the scope of how extensive the trail system was - but it was really pretty back there and we explored and found a lot of beautiful little places."

Paddling access points: Many campgrounds provide direct water access for kayaks and canoes. Ashley F. notes that at Big Creek RV Park, "You can paddle out to the main lake from this location. Quiet setting."

What campers like

Well-maintained sites: Campers frequently mention the quality of camping pads and amenities. Nicole C. appreciated that Big Rig Friendly RV Resort "was well thought out when it was being built, lots of space, great level sites, nice dog park. Fitness center and laundry are new and nice."

Shade variations by location: Different campgrounds offer varying levels of tree cover. Chad L. explains, "This location has 2 RV lots.
